Unique Player Numbers

Noticed that Warrington Wolves have numbers from when they debuted for the club and the player owns the number.

Kind of like what the Australian Cricket team do.

Could incorporate it into the awards night.

I was thinking more along the lines of a tat in the middle of the forehead. 🙂

Jokes aside, it is a good idea. Each player that makes first grade at our club can rightly be proud.

The club has this information it may not be 100% as the records were not always kept neatly for the older games. It has the Player # the year they debut and the # of First game games they had played.

Player numbers have been allocated based on a review of Club Records and according to the following conventions.

1947: First ever captain was allocated No. 1. The other 12 players from the first ever Manly first grade team were allocated numbers 2 to 13 in alphabetical order. All other players making their debut
during the 1947 season were allocated the next available number in alphabetical order.

1948 – 1999: In each season, all players making their debut during that season were allocated the next available number in alphabetical order.

2000 – 2001: Players who debuted for the Northern Eagles in 2000 or 2001 AND played for Manly in 2002 were allocated the next available number in alphabetical order in each season 2000 and 2001.

Players who debuted for the Northern Eagles, but did not play for Manly in 2002 were not allocated a number. Northern Eagles players who rejoined Manly in 2003 or later were allocated a number in the year they rejoined.

2002 – 2011: Players are allocated the next available number based on the order of the actual game in which they made their debut. If multiple players made their debut in the same game, the numbers have been allocated alphabetically.

I've seen that list the club has and it seems a little bit out of whack, especially around the Northern Eagles days. You would need to go to someone like Middleton to get confirmation.

The actual number for the old players doesn't matter too much because it's never going to appear on their jersey. For the "current" players it's more significant if they are going to wear it on their kit. You don't want another Michael Slater tattoo incident.
