Tom and Jake

“Obviously, like the first week or whatever, I was not the best..."
"Obviously the club's just looking after me,”
“Obviously it's not ideal, it's a bit scary,”

Jake's a smart guy with a smart family around him who will help him make the best decision taking into account facts that are, frankly.... obvious!
And everyone keeps saying 3 in a year, are they counting the one last September v Chooks. It looked bad enough to me, at the time I was surprised that one wasn't a Cat 1

Obviously he's not team first
Obviously chasing that big cheque
Obviously we're farked in '26

So you think he did that on his own accord, not under any instructions. Mestrov seems to be the yes man that Penn can finally work with. I don't dislike the guy, just isn't the messiah we had hoped for. And may I add, no one ever will be whilst Penn is pulling all the strings.
I see your point but I disagree that Mestrov is simply Penn's "yes man".

I very much doubt Mestrov is a “ yes man” in any way but he would be curtailed by the funding that Mr Fluffy provides and that would transcend right across his responsibilities, recruitment , football department, staffing.

He would be allowed to spend only what the cap provides & the very small amount of 3rd party we get for the Chaser , Turbo , Jurbo.

His hands would be tied and if that equates as being a “ yes man “ well I guess he is that

$850k Tom (was $1.2m)
$600k Jake (was $1m)

Its a $750k save on current contract. Add that to DCE's $1m its a decent save.

Upgrade Koula & Hoppa if required.

The next move:

Replace Jazz, Aloiai and DCE. with 3 players from Wests Tigers (or have been through their system) Bird, Klemmer and Royce Hunt. Might be worth having a look at Naden and Charlie Stains to replace Chee Cam and Schoppe.

$750000 Tom
Coaching position Jake

If ever there was an obvious current player that will one day Coach for their club, its Jake Trbojevic.

He probably makes it as the Head Coach of the Club one day, but he will definetley launch into his first assistant role post- playing career.

He's a shoo-in for NSW Coach as well!

I love Turbo’s last quote re roster decisions being above his pay grade. He is the highest paid person at Manly!

I reckon Gus is going to have a crack at getting him across to Belmore. And while his form has not been great this year, I’ll be devastated if a Trbojevic plays for another club.

Probably just to bump up their contracts just like they did last time.

Zero chance he’s playing for anyone else.

Based on current form I don't think anyone will be chasing them hard. Jake has seen a rapid deterioration in form but still a great club man and defender and hopefully plays out 2026. Tom unfortunately I cannot see ever getting back to his best as his body will not allow this. I am trying to think of one club who would swap their current fullback for Tom. There maybe a couple. Therefore for me Tom is worth $500-$600k at best on the open market. Given he is a Manly man through and through then maybe $700k tops. This may cause angst and further "Mestrov is not the messiah or Siebold can't coach" however as with DCE we have to offer what is sustainable. IT will be sad day when Jake and Tom no longer play for the Eagles but it would be sadder if we lose Koula and young Hoppa. Imagine if we had of kept Weekes!!

You didn't see the Dolphins game on the weekend, did you?

700k extension (2 years with club option) for Tom is reasonable for all parties considering his past and most likely continuing injury issues. No other club will pay more for such a high risk investment at his age and with his history, despite his obviously outstanding potential.

Jake should see out 2026 and help bring through our next brigade Navale, Hart, Laiafi, Mafoa, Dunford, Muagututia, Bryan, Pua’avase, so they are ready for 2027. He should then be contracted immediately to our coaching and pathways department (with Tom to follow suit a couple of years later).
