Meanwhile, over at the Nick Geigers (1977 World Series hooker), the war drums are beating for Squire Maguire’s sacking (according to the SMH).

Michael Maguire facing the axe as Wests Tigers call crisis meeting

April 25, 2021 — 6.51pm

Wests Tigers officials will hold a series of crisis meetings over the next 48 hours that could see Michael Maguire sacked as coach of the embattled club.

Fed-up Tigers officials have ordered an internal review after the club’s finals hopes were all but buried in Sunday’s humiliating Anzac Day demolition at the hands of Manly at Bankwest Stadium.

The club is now trying to determine whether Maguire will continue as coach or if they would be better parachuting the likes of John Morris or Shane Flanagan into the hot seat after their sixth loss from seven games to open the season.

It appears the only thing now saving Maguire from the axe is the embarrassment some club powerbrokers want to avoid by parting ways with their fifth coach in nine years.

There’s a feeling inside the club that the Tigers have a better and more balanced roster than they did in 2020, yet they are going backwards at a rate of knots. One of the questions set to be asked in the coming days is why perceived improvements in the roster aren’t being met with improvements in performance.

The Herald can reveal Maguire has a clause in his recently inked two-year extension that will allow the club to part ways with him without much of a financial impact on the club. It’s understood there is a cap on a potential pay-out should the Tigers terminate Maguire’s deal.

Sunday’s loss saw this current crop of Tigers become the worst defensive team in the club’s history through seven rounds, not to mention the worst in the NRL for points conceded this year.

The Tigers have gone from ninth in Maguire’s first year in charge to 11th last year. They are now equal last with Brisbane and the Bulldogs after seven rounds.

NRL 2021: Sea Eagles v Tigers, calls for Tom Trbojevic to play fullback in Origin | The Daily Telegraph

Spoke too soon lads. Best game DCE has played in years.

Lots of new combinations, match fitness and Tom missing. Im telling you he as good as he is in attack his defence and organisational play is juat as awsome.

Playing for a contract?

Lazy bastard sitting down with 10 to go.
It certainly wasn't his best first 20 minutes in that game as many of those comments were made in regards to. His team was all over the place with zero composure and he wasn't addressing it as captain and leader. Some good dogged back up play got him into the game and he brought it home in the second to have a great one.

While I'm quite understanding and fine with fans going off in the heat of the moment following their team, I do struggle with people who feel the need to go trawling through past comments of such fans, and bring them up as if every argument you win in hindsight adds brownie points to your sense of worth.

Never liked him since he arrogantly slapped Jamie Lyon on the back all those years ago.

Interesting fact. Luke Brooks has played 155 games for the Tigpies ... and only won 64 of them. As a 5/8 he is 1-3. As a halfback he is 62-86, and off the bench he is 1-2. Basically 41.29%.

He's never really lived up to the early hype has he. Whether that's because of his loyalty to the Tigpies, who knows?

You always wonder how teams will react after their last up performances.

This game loomed as very unpredictable as the Tigpies were so close to upsetting the Vermin and Manly had their best game of the season.

The first 25 minutes or so gave you no clue about what was about to happen. The Tigpies started well, got a try from a kick and looked a good side for the most part.

Manly did not really get going until Harper sparked something with a great break only to inexplicably kick to no one when he had guys unmarked inside of him.

The turning point in the game was the Tigpies pulled up for a shepherd that would have given them 10-0 and that seemed to change things as Manly started to get things right.

Then the game totally turns upside down. Bang! Schuster explodes through the defence with strength and footwork and flicks a pass to DCE who streaks away. Then Bang Bang!! Tommy Turbo at his lethal best, injecting himself and destroying the Tigpies defence and a 0-6 deficit become an 18-6 lead. I dont think anyone who saw the game saw this coming.

The second half was a methodical performance, defence was great, snuffed the Tigpies out and we scored some fantastic tries with the ball being spun and the old combinations looking fantastic.

So what is the turn around from the first month? I see a huge difference in attitude and resilience. at 0-6 the Tigpies had over chances to increase their lead and Manly in the first few rounds would have conceded plenty. This game they hung in there and it reaped huge dividends in the end.

We now have the polish to take advantage of our creative play. All of a sudden we have four playmakers making our attack unpredictable and allowing DCE to run his show without the pressure he was under, wise old Foran just controls the game and you have Schuster and Tommy creating mayhem late in the tackle count.

To see our young forwards like Sipley, Oka, Schuster and Paseka lead the way and it allows Jake and Marty to do their normal stuff. Croker is getting better and better at hooker and Cust compliments him.

You see so much improvement in this team, Again we completed at 73 percent and we MUST respect the ball better. Our defence is much better now and we seem to be able to hang in games now much better.

Fantastic win, building on what happened over the previous 2 weeks. Its great to see the team recover and improve and send a message to our rivals that we are getting better.

Penrith next week is a big reality check for us. Only 4 weeks ago we got obliterated and rag dolled by them. I think for Manly to have any chance ball control is paramount and the resilience will be tested to the hilt. It will give us a better idea of where we are. Regardless of that game its wonderful to see Manly up and about and enjoying their footy again!

don't concern yourself with the struggle buddy. I actually like to watch the match before a light read thru of the game day thread. once again the ANTI DCE boys were out and about which i found very entertaining. that's all.....

TBF, his backing up has been on point as it always is, but everything else has been pretty ordinary. Way too frenetic. His kicking game leaves a lot to be desired and really struggled to bring any composure to his team when needed. Hopefully he'll settle down and take some control
