The top two ( and the rest of us).

I think it’s very clear that the top 2 sides have excellent hookers and their games revolve heavily around them.

We have a makeshift 9, who tackles his heart out and distributes the ball and bugger all else.

Look I know that’s knocking young Froggy but credit where credit is due he’s done bloody well to adapt but he’s just not a top 9 and never will be.

Yep, head and shoulders above the rest. The thing that surprises me though is that when they go head to head, I'll be firmly supporting the Storm. The arrogance of the Penrith team and their fans had pushed me to this!!

I have no doubt we can be the 3rd best team behind these two and potentially challenge them come finals time if we can just get our best team on the park. Can already see the improvement there with Schuster back, Koula coming in for Harper and Tuipulotu playing so well - once we get Tommy and some of the forwards back we could see the underperformers like Saab/Marty drop out. We might even see Fainu at some point!

They’ve become very very smug haven’t they.

This is a pretty funny thread. Yes I agree two teams are standouts but how often do things change between April and October? Answer, nearly always (that's my guess without looking it up).
Keep working on the areas we need to improve, we have enough talent to win this year's comp, but yes to all the Captains and crew of the SS Obvious, we're far away just now!

“ potentially “

But sadly unlikely even with the guns back.

We are just a dumb footy side at times and that’s something the Drizzle and Panfers aren’t , they are well coached , motivated and absolutely clinical.

They’ll maybe lose a game but not when it counts.

I don’t know about funny and yes there’s always a gap between the top 4 and the rest of the competition BUT I haven’t seen such a gap where two sides are streets ahead of the rest for quite a while.

Even last year the top 4 weren’t that far apart , but these two clubs have shown its ( subject to injuries ) a two horse race.

In my opinion it’s only injuries that can have any impact , if they lose key players they’ll come back to the field , if they stay largely intact other than during SOO I don’t see them beating beaten.

People always say these things about teams in May. It's a long season, if we called it at this point Parramatta and St George would have multiple premierships to their names. Teams coached by Des and Bennet and a few other coaches always peak at the right time, while others run their race now.

When we had api , half the forum identified him and his passing game as to why DCE struggled to impact the game..........

He had that good balance of a great defender, an attacking game of sorts
He didn’t play as well with manly. Prolly a Barrett thing.

Actually no, they don’t usually…

As the pic states, only twice in 10yrs has a team come from outside the top 4 (at round 8) to win the big dance. And that’s the beloved Roosters and the darling Rabbits…

We are well off competing with the likes of the Storm and Panthers… history proves it.
a quick perusal of 21 completed comps from 2001 to 2021 shows:

  • In 13/21 one of the 2 leading teams at R 8 made the GF
  • In 6/21 neither of the 2 leading teams at R 8 made the GF
  • In only 2/21 did both leading teams at R 8 made the GF - and one of those was *asterisked out of existence for being cheating scum (2007) (the other year was 2004)
The moral of this story - it's a long season, it aint over yet

Agree those two are light years ahead of the rest. Embarrassingly so. At the moment nobody is in the same hemisphere as Penrith or Storm nobody can't argue.

BUT two teams have to make the final 4 prelim finals and have to get it right for only 2 games. The 3rd and 4th best teams aren't going to be much good on current evidence. Why cant it be us ??

What gets me is we have so much strike in our team I still believe of any given day we can threaten those top teams if we just develop a viable game style and hit the semi's fit and in form. Yes I admit we've shown no evidence in our recent games against the big guns and We may only limp into the 8 the way we are going BUT we have massive upside that's going to explode one day.

How can a team with Turbo, Koula, Huamole, Schuster, DCE, Foran, Jake and speed to burn on the wings, not be a punchers chance in a semi ?? Yes our forwards need to lift.

It's criminal the way we are playing at the moment. So much more to give. No reason we can't be best of the rest and throw a punch or two in the semi's.

Hey Markos , I kinda disagree mate. Put this on the park:

01. Tom Trbojevic
02. Jason Saab
03. Tolu Koula
04. Dylan Walker
05. Reuben Garrick
06. Kieran Foran
07. Daly Cherry-Evans
08. Marty Taupau
09. Manase Fainu
10. Josh Aloiai
11. Haumole Olakau'atu
12. Josh Schuster
13. Jake Trbojevic

14. Karl Lawton
15. Taniela Paseka
16. Sean Keppie
17. Andrew Davey

Depth: Christian Tuipulotu, Morgan Harper, Brad Parker, Lachlan Croker, Toff Sipley, Ethan Bullemor

And I don't fear either Panthers OR Storm.

It's just.somehow making that happen which will be the trick.

Unfortunately, of the 17 names you nominated 7 are unavailable, and Kapow is no longer good enough.

Yep, that's the problem, huh. Getting them ON the field. BUT, I definitely disagree in the Taupau comment mate, watch him have a blinder this week. You'll see.

Forwards leader both on and off the park.

good point, its dangerous to say for certain its storm vs penrith. But this year, which side is the 3rd best?
There probably isn't a clear 3rd best, and whoever it is is a long long way behind. I think it's a combination of Penrith and Melbourne stepping up a gear and everyone else going backwards. Look, I'll agree that the GF looks nailed on to be between those two and you would have to say at this stage they deserve it but we've still got 2/3 of the season to go.....we can live in hope

Yes but that’s the perfect team and we haven’t had anything like that since round 1 and we got walloped !!
