Gotta say I really don’t get this thread! If it was in reference to the first try, that was 100% on Saab. As I said in the MVP thread, Sandwich tackled everything that came his way. Posts like this is why I only visit this site to do the MVP now.

Did some really good things

His defence worries the **** out of me

Him showing the fox the sideline was one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen.

He came out slightly above neutral tonight, if they hadn’t have called back that try, I would be writing this a lot different.

He needs to defend
Better.

I’ll disclose that Garrick is one of my favourite players…I absolutely love him. But…I thought his defence was very concerning tonight. He made some great saves but the Dogs looked dangerous, made significant yards, and troubled Garrick’s edge all night. A great defensive performance is one where the opposition don’t even look a threat. He did well to stop a bloodbath tonight but I wouldn’t call it egg on the face of the doubters. Opposition coaches would love what they saw out there tonight.

he made some good tackles, missed nine (!) and made some bad reads

His defense was very mixed and he will continue to get targeted, and deservedly so

I thought the right edge defence was thrown off by DCE on nearly every occasion... Even if they did make metres, it's hard to avoid that in a shift, and Garrick cleaned up so many times. The Fox try was the only one he didn't clean up and that is admittedly on him.

Nine seems like a lot for a centre. Given the importance of defence in that position, nine missed tackles would normally result in multiple tries, which didn’t eventuate tonight. Not saying he wasn’t responsible for nine missed tackles if that’s what’s documented in the stats somewhere. However if he did, the cover defence must have been exceptional!

You have baffled me for ages. (Well the season of your meddling semi lucid germinating sometime prophetic provincial hustings amongst us soon to be put to seed)

You know your footy, your pop culture references are sound/ish and your a Manly fan so that's a pass but GARRICK IS A WINGER

AND A PASSABLE ONE AT THAT.

it's like wearing CROCs to a board meeting with Mark Zuckerberg and wondering if they would actually be better shoes to wear at the beach even though someone told you he's really into them

Fun Fact:

Reuben Garrick needs just 7 points to move into 3rd outright on Manly's all time point scoring list. After tonight he sits on 1,148 points (77 tries, 420/526 goals (76.92%)). Garrick has currently played 133 games.

Currently 3rd is former fullback Bob Batty (198 games from 1959–71) who scored 1,154 points (40 tries (3 ppt), 501 goals, 18 field goals).

Adjusting for today's points (4 point try and not that it counts much, 2 point FG beyond 40 etc), Batty would be on 1,194 points while adjusting for the pre-1983 try of only 3 points, Reubs would be on 1,071.

Good post. The M-W club still assert that ‘Roadie’ played over 200 FG premiership games.

His first half was not good, but his second half was much, much better. I've seen it from Rueben in a few games this year: for some reason, he's not switched on defensively at the start of games, but improves as the game goes on.

Centre is probably the most difficult position to play defensively. You see a lot of traffic - from backrowers, halves and the fullback, as well as your opposite number - and are targeted all game. At some point in the game, you will get exposed.

It was never going to be an easy transition and Rueben is showing signs of improvement, so I can see why the coach is sticking with him.
