The No-Look News (Schuster Chronicles)

I thought there were some good signs from Schu, had a couple of poor errors but played long minutes and made plenty of tackles including a try saver on our line. Good to see him on the field, hopefully the hit out will be good for him.
Noteable that he didn’t throw the ball away with no look passes into touch, which showed good application in curbing his natural instincts.

I’ll say it now. I’d be happy to move him on and let him know that. Yes, he may become good, but it’s up to him to prove it now. All I see is an overweight entitled brat living on media dreams. How good are you, ****ster? How bad do you want it?

I’ve been one of Schuster’s biggest defenders and still think he is one of the most talented players we’ve had come through in a long time but the last few weeks have been concerning. Admittedly I don’t think he is being used properly at all but the fact he can’t get in to shape and is coming up with so many errors is a worry.

He’s played well every time he’s played 5/8 this year but Foz is definitely the better option and player there right now. I think he’ll be fine next year with a full pre season, hopefully getting fully fit and in better shape to play 5/8 but it might be in our best interests to have him playing out the year for Blacktown. Certainly wouldn’t be looking to move him on though.

Get rid of Des and bring somebody in more professional and up to date. Des’ time is done. I’m happy to give him another chance, but he needs to come forward with a compelling plan. We are drowning in mediocrity.

Some fans are lost in euphoria

I’ll say it now. Give him one ultimatum to pull his weight and get with the current flow or farkkkk off elsewhere. I want a champion, not some schmaltz pretender bitch.

The previous 5 weeks we spanked the Warriors,we spanked the Tigers,we spanked the Cowboys for 72 minutes,we spanked the Storm for 70 minutes and spanked the Knights.
One loss with our workhorses in the forwards out and we are crap?
The Game day thread was hilarious last night.

He's quite clearly over weight and out of shape. I was really impressed with is contributions last year but so far this season he looks like he's stopped taking his thyroid medication.

The Shoe looks lost. Our coaching staff have turned the most talented junior into a 'rocks' player; the 'diamonds' have been nicked by someone.
Yep. Talent needs to be nurtured. No idea where the player we saw last year has gone but, at his age, must be down to the work/guidance of the coaching staff.

Yep. It was clear the impact of missing our most important defenders. We’ve been on a good run.

When I look at Schu I see a young footy player having a tough second season in NRL.
I agree and can see him coming good at some point. However, if he were fit and had a better attitude about doing the 1%ers, I think he wouldn’t be struggling so much.

I know I’m repeating myself but concessions can be made for his footy, but not for his weight. If he was fit, I think the noise would be much quieter.

Schuster should spend the rest of the season playing five-eight at Blacktown. He just isn't fit enough to play first grade. He then needs to drop significant weight before he plays five-eight for us next season. Right now he simply isn't first grade standard.

In defence of Schu, there was a great deal of debate between development coaches many years ago about his move to 6 in Manly’s SG Ball side. Was it the best thing for his development? Long term (as in FG), would his best position be 6? The idea was that playing him in the halves and allowing his skill set to dominate less talented kids, could harm him later on, when transitioning to FG.

How? By picking up bad habits, like no look passes and other brain explosions. Looking for points and the big play at every opportunity. What comes at the expense of this headspace? An unwillingness to roll up the sleeves and the neglect of fundamentals, like ensuring you control the ball when getting up to the play it.

I’m not writing Josh off completely, there’s a long way to go. But it looks like those development coaches were spot on with this prediction....and now, given Josh’s weight gain, he doesn’t have the physical conditioning to access the very skill set that landed him in that position in the first place.

The club should have played him on an edge for his own good, instead of putting trophies ahead of player development.

But was he exclusively a 5/8 in juniors? I thought he was at times also selected as a forward.
At the start in Matthews he was a prop(I think he was not happy with the Eels because they wanted him there).
He actually played prop initially and then moved to second row early and I think was vice captain or captain of the side.
They moved him into the halves in the Ball side I think as Snake said.

He was exclusively a 6 for us but rep selectors were smart and picked him on an edge because they could see what was best for Josh.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a big bust up and he ends up somewhere else. He’s not a ‘Des’ player and certainly not a Des 6. No one or nothing can force Dessie’s hand. If he decides Schu is not our 6 next year, he’ll keep him on the bench and eventually there’ll be a request for a release.
