The Daly Cherrygraph

You are right. He did play. It must have been another winger I heard Watmough mention.
Now, who is it? šŸ¤”
You heard it correctly, I'm pretty sure Watmough did say Taufua but I think he meant to say Peta Hiku, who had played fullback in place of Snake in the first 2 finals that year (and had run for something like 300m in that 0-4 loss to the Roosters)

I did like the honesty Choc showed towards DCE in that podcast but he was wrong when talking about how 2013 ended. Wolfman had also scored that freakish try in the prelim to put us in front of Souffs so he was hardly going to be dropped for the GF. Pretty easy for him to say Wolfman should've been dropped in hindsight AFTER he had a shocker in the GF

Thanks. I thought my memory was going šŸ˜‚
Good to see it's Watmough's instead 😁

Yes. If you listen to Watmough, during the week the senior players did not want Wolfman to play in the GF due to form. They wanted Hiku to play against Tupou.
Tooves said no and the rest is history. Wolfman had a worse game than Hayne and we lost due to him being owned by Tupou.

After this the senior group lost faith in Tooves. Then came the Glenn Stewart debacle.

We mostly lost that Grand Final IMO because our defence turned to water in the final 25 minutes.

There may have been that forward pass on the end of it, but we just let James Maloney stride 30 metres down the middle of the field without a hand being laid on him.

And whether we love Snake or not, fact is he and Wolfman were 100% guilty of ball watching when Michael Jennings scored. Either one could and should have taken the ball over the dead ball line. Neither did, they just watched and hoped.

Despite Shame Hayne's performance (which wasn't flash even before the forward pass), we still led 18–8 with 25 to go. We then let them score 18–0.....

As much as it pains me to say it, the Roosters were a better side in 2013. You could sense that Manly were not quite at the same level they were under Hasler; particularly in the forwards. In the Prelim, we were getting pumped by Souths and they choked. We were good enough and experienced enough to take advantage, but early in the that game, the writing was on the wall.

The final 20 minutes of the GF was a combination of poor refereeing and fatigue from a big final series; something the Roosters did not have to contend with, having the second week off after beating us 4-0 in a gruelling encounter.

I love the 2013 side for its courage and character, but I have always thought they overachieved, rather than missed an opportunity like say 1995.

In saying that, funnily enough the game was ours in the GF. We let the win slip through our fingers. We choked along with being dudded with a forward pass that won the chooks the game in the end

I saw it differently. I agree the pass was forward but the Roosters had more in the tank and stormed home with plenty of energy. We were out on our feet after a taxing final series. Endurance is a big part of professional sport and we lost the game because the Chooks were fresh from a week off. There was a definite surge from the Roosters. I thought we were brave but weren’t the better side on the day. Just an opinion on how I saw it. Looking back, it’s no less heartbreaking to be ten points up with 20 minutes to go in a GF.

Honestly I have never understood the hate against DCE for the amount of $ he has taken. That is a symptom of the club management and what they were willing to pay not the player
I think the issue, for me at least, was before that contract, and instead when it became known that a first year rookie who found himself in a premiership winning team, said he will stop training if he doesn't immediately see more money. Imagine you are part of a tight-knit group, who worked their backsides off for years to be the best, literally bled for each other, and all took unders in the name of success - success, mind you, that DCE has profited from for over a decade after.

This is very telling of someone's character, and values.

The way the club handled it's contracts after that however, prioritising DCE over the older guys, is completely on the club.

I was at that game and remember leaving thinking how did we lose that game. Have never watched or been at a game where I’d had that feeling before or since really. Felt like we were always the better team that night. Souths game we got out of jail big time.

That is fair however I am always unsure as to what the actual truth is in any of these cases

Honestly though if it was that much of an issue at the time the club could have said no thanks and moved him on - if anything the clubs actions have encouraged his behaviour

I made terrible decisions when I was young.
I'm so far from that person I was now.

I can't say that DCE is still that guy, facts are we don't know what's going on behind the scenes at the club.

Recall reading a pre match team rating just before the 2013 G F that had the Roosters just very marginally ahead and that seemed to be based on Soony Bill's ability to sometimes be able to change the course of a game .
Even doubtful if he should have been eligible to return to the N R L that year but that is another matter .
Always did and continue to have respect for the Wolfman but could not have picked a worse time for an off game fielding bombs and unfortunately probably did give a leg up which ordinarily may not have happened .
Scoreline not a good indication of the match with that late Roosters try . fortunate Manly penalty try but only reason Roosters finally got an edge was from some even more fortunate outcomes and naturally including Ref 's calls
Probably one of the worst calls in a big match included just before half time when that Jamie Lyon kick for touch was Clearly touched by a Rooster player and not acknowledged by the match officials , particularly the linesman .
Still think it was a case of Manly being deprived the opportunity for a win rather then the Roosters having a superior team or general play on the day

Hmmm, but his behaviour come first, not the club's reaction.

As is often said, we shouldn't blame others for our own actions

The player and their management has a large say in playing hardball & upping the price .

This is 100 percent correct according to Watmough’s pod cast a few years ago.

Wolfman scored that great try in the semi and I think tooves backed him instead of hiku.

Moving forward two years i still think it was a major issue that still affects us today that Trent and bozo moved on hiku , gutho and even ballin although ballin barely played a game again howveer bringing in dylan walker and Nate Myles was not successful.

Gutho could have been our top line 5/8 still now.

Just my opinion

Hiku was good at Penrith and warriors and nth qld even for a few years after.

Marty was ok for us for a few years I guess.

Massive mistake in recruitment in 2015 for the 2016 year.

Also Barrett was the worst coach we ever had.

Fair enough. All opinions are valid. Maybe I’ve spun it to make it less painful šŸ˜‚

I feel we can maybe take some comfort from what appears evident that the Raiders handled their Fogarty situation about as well as we handled our DCE situation - rather similarly, and if anything with even less sense.

This certainly puts to sleep any lingering idea of a DCE last minute backflip: nope, definitely gone.
