The Daly Cherrygraph

Daly Cherry-Evans could be valued at less than $400,000 in the salary cap by the NRL next year if Manly want to re-sign him. But right now, the club privately believes he entered this year leaning towards giving the game away at the end of the season.

Manly insiders, not authorised to speak publicly, say Cherry-Evans has been told about a potential coaching job at the club, while media opportunities are also being put forward.

There has been a lot written and said about Cherry-Evans’ future. At this point, he has not yet made up his mind whether to play on in 2026. And that’s a long way from demanding a two-year extension to stay at Manly, as has been suggested in some areas. Neither the club nor DCE’s management say they have heard anything about demands for a two-year contract extension.

Some of the commentary about Cherry-Evans has gone down badly with those close to him.

Cherry-Evans is keeping things to himself, so the truth is not easy to extract. From what this column can ascertain, the club is completely aware of his position, that he is still contemplating his future.

Sources at the NRL, not authorised to speak publicly, tell me Cherry-Evans will not break the bank for the Sea Eagles, or another club, if he wants to play next year. The Eagles have been told he will be valued by the NRL at $400,000, or even less, on the salary cap.

That is in line with Ben Hunt and his valuation at the Broncos. Hunt, 34, was seen as a $650,000 player by the NRL. That would mean Manly would pick up a bargain buy if Cherry-Evans, 36, was to stay, particularly when compared to the monster $1.4 million-a-season deal Dylan Brown will earn in Newcastle.

The NRL can nominate a minimum figure for a player’s salary it will accept on the club’s salary cap, to avoid clubs being advantaged by a player agreeing to a contract significantly below market value. They won’t discuss publicly what the DCE figure is.

There are several other NRL clubs watching what Cherry-Evans does, and they will pay significantly more for a 12-month stint, which could be extended if he plays to the level everybody knows he can. DCE could earn in the order of $800,000 at rival teams if he shocked everyone and decided to test the market.

One of the clubs watching closely is the Roosters, who like DCE’s character and his relationship with their young half Sam Walker.

Cherry-Evans, who will be 37 by the start of next season, has shown no signs of slowing down, and with quality halfbacks thin on the ground in the NRL, he could make big money.

One thing that can’t be challenged is his commitment to a big year with Manly.
Well it’s simple. If Chez hasn’t decided whether to play on or not next year, just lead us to a premiership this year and retire a happy man.
Sorted.
Lock it in Chez.

Well I hope that is correct but there is a lot of quoting from sources “not authorised to speak publicly”…

the Ben Hunt $650K value v Chez $400K value is “interesting” - whilst Chez will be 2 years older than Ben when they sign the relative contracts, $400K seems exceptionally low for a player with Chez’s experience (particularly if he is still a SOO starter at that point)… maybe that takes into account the marquee player and length of service provisions?

You have to sign him at 400 plus bla bla, but his role has to change or the team stagnates

I presume the “ plus “might need extra sign off approval from the Top

History of going the full monty as a club financially …….no strong

Seems a marketers dream with sponsors and the like, and possible backlash from fans probable

Wow you must be excited hearing that this year really might be it for DCE!
If that transpires who would you like to see (realistically) as the new Manly half next year?

Because of where we are today without the poor retention which include cut price foz and JH. Unlucky with schuster yes /no. Jumping at shadows maybe with the brooks schuster but with what we have

Next season
I would run DCE at half on a 1 year contract with the eye of turning him into a 14 ASAP
We have to attract and have some coin tied up in the turtle. 15 players off contract to its time to tweek the whole squad somewhat and get playing a different brand of footy . Never a better time . Just someone mid priced, solid player with a contract based in manlys favour and get the cut price ( cap related ) captain playing 14 where he has an assignment to open up the game
Cherries on

Brooks is decent, arthur is hungry but ltd . The signing of matto into the 30 was impulsive possibly,

In the forseeable I still see our season based on Tommy's hammys WIWO the Chosen Chookie and am probably prepared to concede a leanish season to balance the squad. Its not a spoon squad without DCE . Our window is a couple of years away

We need to get the frog away from 9 and talk of starling he could also become a very handy utility

Be nice to give walsh a few games a bit before he is ready and let him have the off season to Go Again

"not authorised to speak" a journalist's favourite quote, anything that comes after it is mainly rubbish

Funny how it goes, the raiders have a capable pack, their spine has always been a bit of a problem, now they have Pattie emerging, Starling playing well and they’ve just signed Brailey, interesting, I guess they can carry 3 DH’s (how many are we carrying! I’d like to swap ours for theirs) but Starling remains unsigned, so who’s going to get game time and who’s not? Who’s going to be happy missing out? I guess a lot hinges on how Starling plays out the rest of this year.

We don’t need a FB as we have a couple of options so I don’t care much about that, but for the record, I think Savage will become there 1 in time, unless Kayo improves, that leaves their halves, Strange is a lock, which leaves their 7, are they looking at someone?

Fogarty remains unsigned, will they resign him? I think so or they will definitely try unless they are eyeing another opportunity, but his fair game and available to approach. With Daly’s future up in the air, (at this stage) there’s a potential package deal there that we should seriously consider and probably be talking too as a back up to our current situation. If Daly resigns, that’s different, (please don’t throw cap away on any deal there) in any case we should still look at Starling, he is a genuine DH and we need one, more than badly.

We also need a clean out and the opportunity is there end of this season, rebalance our cap, I’m ok with senior halves, just pay them accordingly, Brisbane is proof it can work, but not without a pack to work for them, so it’s obvious we need to build a better engine room. Our line speed and aerobic ability is diabolical. Move Guac into the middle, as our enforcer, go after another quality prop (is Lenui still unhappy, we need that type of player) and 2 young no frills work horses for our edges, with high aerobic engines and preferably good leg speed.

It’s so past time to build a working pack with leg speed and get a genuine DH, then I think Daly or Fogarty on 400-600 with Brooks works no problems, along with a good clean out that allows us to fund the pack we need. I guess a lot hinges on Toms health and any new deal we strike with the Urbo’s, either way that will play a huge part in us getting it right or continuing along as per the status quo, I’ll leave the rest of that alone, but it’s pretty obvious what needs to happen there.

Personally I don’t expect much to change, the senior playing group, will more than likely stick together and have too much influence on the outcome, think we’ll be seeing much of the same for the next couple of years. However should things go bad with Daly, we have the opportunity to head in a new direction and I hope we do if that’s the case, chase the Raiders pair to fill the void, go after a working pack and begin the transition, towards a complete rebuild, I can’t take much more of the same old same old we’ve been throwing up over the last 10 years, it’s time to move away from ageing forwards, lumbering body types and get with the times, get mobile, speed our game up or continue to watch us slide into obscurity, I’ve had a gut full of the thinking we’re in a premiership window, its delusional, we aren’t within a bulls roar of the sides that play up tempo footy, even if we could finish top 4, which I also can’t see, it’s time to look to the future.

Chez may be lower due to only playing for 1 club?

Yeah I am guessing the cap allowances are being applied to get down to a number like $400k… if any of the story is actual facts of course…
Yep, that article was by Danny Wiedler. So take it for what it's worth. If anything he's probably less on the piss than the hacks at the Daily Telegraph.

For those of you that are excited at the prospect of DCE moving on and/or of the persuasion that we shouldn’t fight too hard to keep him, tune in to the Eels and watch what happens when a club loses an experienced leader. Rebuilds excite fans that are dissatisfied with the status quo, but moving on experienced heads and/or sacking coaches rarely (if ever) leads to overnight success.

Be careful what you wish for. The Eels are good reminder of that.

Imo rebuilds aren’t good for business. There is no draft to incentivise a proper rebuild, and all it does is inflate what you have to pay to get average players to come to you. Then, any good young players become impatient and then leave, completely wasting the investment the club has made in them.

I’m with you. We need DCE for one more year at least, unless he wants to retire. If he wants to retire, I think next year will be dire.
