So because he is young, has pace, looks athletic, has x factor, he gets a free pass, wow, he was probably our worst on the field last night.
I am not saying drop him, I am not bagging him and he will learn for sure and WILL likely be a very good footballer, but last not last night.

Had a tough start to his career, has made some mistakes but I really like the kid. He has X factor about him and a willingness to compete. He can hit in defence and is an athletic player with natural footy instincts. He will learn from his mistakes and I reckon next year could be a real break out year for him. I'd be extending him on the cheap now
I agree.Alot of ppl are roasting him.. but he shows alot of promise. Has shown some glimpses of a genuine footballer. Last night everything just went wrong for him.. i won't be judging him just yet. After all he is a centre everyday of the week. From memory, the intercept was probably the only mistake he made that was in his control.. everything else I think he was just unlucky. The tackles, the offload from taupau was a shocker. But he showed he was willing, probably the only player pushing up all night in support. He puts himself in positions to do something although not paying off last night.. but good signs. That and carries the ball well, and has good change of lines. Another note, how tf does he get 10 in the bin when hetherington stays on the field.. and slater was able to fly kick people in the process of scoring tries his whole career? I was fuming.. we have had some very questionable calls all year and I've had enough

I gave Funa 3 MPV points as he was the only player out there who was really trying. He has now shown us some of his skills, albeit mixed up with a few bad reads.

He should not have been sinbinned or had an 8 point try against him. If his timing had of been a bit better, he would have his arm under Johnson with a possible roll into touch.

At least, he got there in defence, something Garrick & Elliot could not do.

Again, he mistimed his runs of the ball carriers and put a few down. Had he taken the passes, he would have had line breaks and/or assists to outside attackers. Obviously not practiced at training, but he had the nous to be there at the tight time.

His FB positioning was spot on and he can "man up" in front-on tackles on the line.

He is a definite keeper and long time back up to Turbo in the future.

I think he’s a terrific young talent and he kept trying hard, even after making a few errors. Along with Cade Cust, he’s one of the very few positives to come out of the season.
He’s going to cop a suspension but I hope he keeps his head up and comes back stronger. Given an injury free offseason, he’ll be great for us next season.

So for that hit Funa gets sent to the bin, it’s an 8 point try and he gets charged. Surely the nrl could have found a few more things to throw at him. That is way over the top, I have seen plenty worse that don’t get penalised so heavily
Supposed crusher tackles against a parra player carry a loading.

Funa is a classic example of using young players. They will be rocks and diamonds and coaching staff had to back their judgement .
That’s how they progress.
May not win more games early on but sure beats playing guys who you know aren’t good enough. We have plenty of senior players to guide kids.
He’s going ok.

Funa has reasonable pace, but looked like a sloth in comparison to a questionably offside Addo Carr on that kick chase....but the real factor here, was being well out of position for the kick....would have Hoppa at 1, where he can float and not be so iscolated for power runners like Olam and shift Funa into centre where he is more comfortable.
be interesting to see this weeks team after a few more injury concerns..

I think Tyfuna had made an earlier tackle and didn't have the time to retreat to a fullback position. But where was our right winger?

Wingers don't usually drop till tackle 4 (not sure what tackle that was)??, but fair point in general...so often opposition kicks find space behind our wingers in general, forcing a repeat set or an absolute struggle set after starting out from terrible field position....
In actual fact you have nailed a very valid point as to our recent form, I can't recall seeing any other NRL side in 2020, start each set from as tough a position as Manly, which makes it an absolute struggle to keep in the contest due to poor field position and as stated, rarely do we see these 6 more calls or penalties to piggy back us out.

I listened to this on the radio and after watching it on replay ( yes I tortured myself) their call was spot on.
He wasn't necessarily "out of position" it was more the fact that as it was early in the count, 2 or 3, that he jogged back into position behind the line BUT he had turned his back rather than watching the Storm set up for the next play.
Moreso his inexperience of not being switched on every minute of every play (and not a specialist fullback ) versus the guile and experience of Cameron Smith.
If he was switched on would they have put the kick and chase on? Maybe, maybe not.
Would he have been able to get there anyway? Maybe, maybe not.

I don't really think we can blame the right winger either as it would have looked like they were shifting left with JAC pushing up for a quick dart one off the ruck.

It does highlight the difference of Smith's experience plus having attacking threats that keep the defence second guessing, I'd say it was a split second decision to put the kick in once he saw Funa with his back turned.
Also does highlight the old argument that fullbacks are not just attacking weapons, they need to be able to read the play defensively.
