Different beast.

They pick the best 17, and shoehorn them all in to fit.

Which is why there hasn't been a centre play for NSW for a few years.
It's food for thought though.
Origin can, in my opinion be a window into the future about the shape of the game.
If a player like Jake can go well in origin maybe there is something to it.
Remember when NSW went for big running 5/8's?

Could be wrong but think that that 800 k[ or could be 850 ] for Marty next season is part of a back ended deal for him . Think that the intention by Manly to encourage him to seek other options for next season may be more related with the start of the year situation where the whole team were not performing to any sort of an acceptable standard for whatever reason . Has been going a lot better , just like the rest of the side [ with a couple of exceptions ] since that time . Most likely could still get by with a prop rotation of Paseka , Aloiai , Sipley and Sipley but one more season with Marty next season could still work out and be accommodated i am sure on present indications . Think that it much preferable to have Jake as the 13 instead of Schuster , big work load required there and better to utilize and free up Schuster ;s talents elsewhere and if [ or now that ] Foz is keeping on , 2 nd row .

To cover all bases we'd probably need at least one more Sipley @:D@:D@:D
Certainly agree there but if guys like Vaughn are[ or will ] not being considered , maybe could look within , Well performed props usually still come at a price as well to acquire or to bring in , look at the 600 k for Aloiai , worth it when he is at his best and available but not that much short of Marty on his purported current contract and discounting his 2022 contact value .

If you can adequately replace him in his best position, sure.
I'm not sure we can.

It's not like Manly can just call up Yeo or Dale Finucane to play lock, well not under the cap anyway.

Must have a Keppie avoidance syndrome this morning , but hey he is going well . After reading Chip and Chase :s interesting and recent post on up to date signings , forgot to include Saddler as a promising future prop option for Manly .

You need a good work horse in your team and Marty is that. He gets in there and does his job and does it well.

We dont need something fancy for that position other than the ability to make ground, defend well and off load as often as is available. Its an important role to get the team the ground needed for the players with ball skills.

I think the forward line up is beginning to look pretty decent. Jake holds the centre and has the skills to set play up from the middle of the pack, Schuster (who I think is wasted in the forwards but so be it for now), is the X factor forward to play a little wider and create space and opportunities for the backs (love to see this guy in a year or two with Burbo running off him), Keppie is a Buhrer like work horse with a touch of creativity and safety in defence, Olakau'atu and Paseka monster the opposition up the middle with occasional big runs, Burbo will become a bit of a Menzies type, classic defence and the speed of a centre. Aloiai covers the same issues as Marty, and then great back ups on the bench in Davey, Lawton, Sipley, De Luis.

What more do you want. And there's a couple of kids like Sione Fainu, Saddler etc coming through, if they re-sign them. Manly dont need to spend big in the forwards. In fact we dont really need to spend big anywhere. The team we have and those on the rise are a pretty decent lot.

Jake aint a prop. Doesn't make enough metres. Is a middle forward. Don't think we need 3 props on the bench either.
Aloiai a back-rower option or could put Davey to bench, retain Jake at lock for another season and start Aloiai at prop.

I know it's a narrative that gets run a lot on silvertails (Jake to prop). Although for me the most telling moment was when Jake had origin in a recent season. He played prop and was bending the line far more than he does for us when he was allowed to have a rest mid-game. Recharged and played a simple role. It's fine to retain him at lock for this year and maybe next, although I don't think his career will be sustainable there. He's getting slower as the years go on and is still pretty early into his career. He's still seems to be drifting away from the modern day locks even though he's been reliable this year.

I think we should focus on youth, so if we let Taupau go, it's on a swap deal with Tevita Pangai Junior (as a middle forward). Short leash type of deal.

08. Tevita Pangai Junior
09. Manase Fainu
10. Taniela Paseka
11. Haumole Olakau'atu
12. Josh Schuster
13. Jake Trbojevic

14. Karl Lawton
15. Sean Keppie
16. Josh Aloiai
17. Andrew Davey

With Saddler, Sipley, Croker depth.

That means I let Cust , Gosiewski, Boyle, Sironen, Suli, Funa all go (along with Taupau)...hope that is enough for TPJ.

01. Tom Trbojevic
02. Jason Saab
03. Morgan Harper
04. Dylan Walker
05. Reuben Garrick
06. Kieran Foran
07. Daly Cherry-Evans

The backs. Brad Parker depth.
Great looking team

I think Finucane is the answer if Marty ends up with a deal elsewhere.
Its such a value add in terms of strengthening our team, a quality signing, a Gillespie type.
How much would it cost to secure Dale? 800-900?
Marty 800-850
Sirro ?
Boyle ?
Jetski ?
Could also shop Suli to free up coin, personally don’t see that happening.
Marty and Sirro’s coin would probably be sufficient, providing someone takes Marty no freight.
Dale can play anywhere in the pack just like Jake, they can both cover the workload of 13 better than just about anyone, both can interchange to the front row if needed, no additional prop required, both can play huge minutes, for me it would be a no brainer if the pennies fall into place.

8 Paseka
9 Fainu-Croker
10 Aloia
11 Gauc
12 Shoe - I would prefer shoe to be at 6 and start Finucane in the second row
13 Jake

14 Lawton-Walker
15 Finucane - with shoe at 6, Finucane starts and we can play an extra big man or edge back rower, pending who we play. (Saddler, Lawton if Walker plays 14, Burbo, possibly Davey pending his recovery.
16 Keppie
17 Sip’s
its a strong pack

Vaughn and Tevita Jnr? What are people thinking?!!
His former coach says Vaughn is not leadership material and likes to party with the younger players. His values include Hey let's disobey our club coach and then lie about it. He can play but to put him in a young playing squad would be a crazy risk from a culture viewpoint.
The other guy? Off-field seedy contacts and dramas. Now in his 6th NRL season, and aside from odd flashes has never lived up to the potential.
They are the sort of player you would try to keep and work with if they were your own talented troubled juniors but to deliberately bring them into your squad? Ah, no thanks! Just my opinion.
Most blokes eventually grow up and learn their lesson just like we all have .

Have you watched Koula play? He’s a speed demon & a solid boy! Plays Centre /FB & wing ata pinch! The kid was courted by Rugby Yawnion & still is. Played Australia Junior Wallabies before progressing to league which he prefers. Obviously people with far more knowledge of talent than you rate him highly & are convinced.
Hope you're right mate, but we are talking potential here. Watched him closely this year, and he has definite defensive deficiencies and handling issues (a lot to work on)... Dozens of players every year play junior reps and are courted by clubs across both codes - we all know this is based on potential, and very few turn out to be the stars we all would like. Junior recruitment is a gamble. Can you remember the accolades given about Hopoate by all of these 'knowledgeable' people you speak of?

To not have a specialist fullback after Turbo who is a proven first grader is completely inadequate for a 30-man first grade squad. To rely on a teenager who has never laced up for a single first grade game is premature, and puts unfair pressure on the kid. We all hope he excels, but what happens this season, or next, when turbo goes down? Such a shame that all the work our forwards are doing goes to waste whenever we lose Tom, and Manly instantly transforms from a premiership contender to an ugly mess

Not a fan of Jake at prop. TPJ is over rated.
Yeah Jake hasn’t got the leg speed to be effective at prop...his best attributes are keeping the middle tight in defence for 80 minutes and ball playing to link between Daly and Foran when required. His carry is simply not strong enough to gather momentum in the middle of the ruck.
