Surprise Surprise, we have a goal kicker

"Manly don't have a goal kicker"......or do they?

For all of the fears in the pre-season that unless we signed a James Maloney or played someone like Jackson Hastings that Manly would struggle on the goal kicking front with our most likely kickers being either Dylan Walker, Daly Cherry-Evans or Matthew Wright, none of whom would have been considered top line kickers.....DCE has stepped up and is currently knocking them over at a pretty damn good rate.

So far this year Cherry has kicked an impressive 23 goals from 27 attempts for a strike rate of 85.19% with hauls of 3/4, 9/10, 1/1, 6/8 and 4/4. Now admittedly he has had a lot of kicks from in front of or somewhere near the posts and he is still a bit hit and miss from out wide, but then not everyone is a Matthew Ridge, Daryl Halligan or Hazem El Masri.

Prior to this year his NRL career stats were 37/62 for a strike rate of just 59.6%. As of right now he has kicked 60/89 and his strike rate has risen to 67.42%

Cherry's goal kicking seems to have gotten back to the standard of his days in our U/20s and for the Sunshine Coast when he had a reputation as one of the better kickers. Its been a very welcome return to kicking form for DCE and lets hope it continues.

DCE has done a great job, but the demolition of Parramatta helped him to some easy kicks in front of the post. I'm sure over more time the stats will diminish unfortunately. Personally, I'd like Hastings to take over the kicking role, just think DCE is taking on too much responsibility. I'm hopeful that Hastings gets a start at halfback, but I'm not sure this is going to happen. Have a crack Barrett!

That's why I said that admittedly Cherry has had most of his kicks from close enough to the posts that he shouldn't miss.

But if he keeps knocking them over at the rate he is doing then I'm not going to complain.

DCE is an awesome goal kicker if we score in the middle third of the field. Outside of that, not so much.

Jackson Hastings kicks at 82.86%, not too shabby indeed. Can anyone seriously come up with a reason why Barrett doesn't slot Hastings into the 7, and take over the kicking duties? I'm starting to get the ****s with Barretts thinking. We are 2 from 5, and that's the easy draw... If we don't get some changes soon, I'm jumping on the Strone33 bandwagon.

It could be that DCE is wearing the 7 ......

Yes Woodsie, but I want DCE in the 6, and Hastings in the 7... Stuff it, I'm ringing Barrett now!

Perhaps you have something there ... coaching by popular vote ... the Democratic Republic of Sea Eagles ....

I see a problem though ... a brief scan of the threads would indicate that half the numbnuts would probably vote for players we don't have.

PSS ( I am pretty certain that there will be some Silvertails removed from the electoral roll by "accident")

Dce has worked on his goalkicking which is great. Maybe he can work on organizing the team and keeping us focused. Then we wouldnt need to find this organizing 5/8 we seem to be looking for. Not having a go at him as he tries his heart out, but something to thk off as he has the experience.

So Hastings kicks at close to 83%, do we know how many he's kicked from 10m from either sideline?

It's like claiming a car can get 100km/1L petrol as opposed to another one getting 100km/15L petrol - I can just put it neutral and roll down a very big hill and my fuel economy is awesome.

I've said it before, with all the stats that the broadcasters etc have at their disposal and the new ones they come up with each year - eg post contact metres I'm surprised they don't have this stat available somewhere.

As for kicking, Killer had some days where he'd land them from anywhere and other days he'd miss ones he'd expect to get.
I'd say DCE put his hand up to be our regular kicker so has trained accordingly, barring a catastrophe he'll be our kicker.

DCE and whacko Jacko. Now that may well be a halves combination that wins a Premiership. Tandem kickers. Tandem controllers. I think DCE having the goal kicking is bringing the best out in the great man. Whacko Jacko just may be the annoying little upstart that drives this team and DCE that little bit more. #Let's make Round 6 the round of Start Hastings Bazzzzzzzzz.

So who's Putin in this organisation?

because DCE is kicking at 85% so why would you want to reduce your conversions

Exactly, impossible to tell really, last year we scored a lot out wide but this year more in the middle but how are other teams going for this as well?

Since Matthew Ridge, we really have struggled most years for a quality kicker who would kick at somewhere around 80%.

Craig Field, Shannon Nevin, Brendon Reeves, Chris Hicks, Steve Matai, Dylan Walker,....all were hit and miss.

Ben Walker, Andrew Walker and Michael Witt were actually quite good while Luke Williamson, Matty Orford, Jamie Lyon and Matthew Right weren't bad for the most part, but they still had days where they couldn't buy a kick even from near the posts and it was always a case of cross your fingers and hope for the best if they had a sideline conversion.

Cherry was also hit and miss for a long time. 25/40 (62.5%) in 2011, 3/6 in 2012, 0/1 and 0/4 in 2013 and 2015. But while he only had 11 shots at goal last year it was the start of his improvement. He kicked 9 of those 11 in 2017 and has continued with 23/27 this year. That's 32/38 (84.2%) since 2017.

So long as DCE keeps kicking at around 80% or more then I'm happy enough to keep him as our kicker for now, even with Hastings in the side.

Just to add a little spice to this, Thurston retired from State of Origin last year, Smith probably this year, any ideas on who might kick goals for Queensland in 2019, or should I say, who might like to? 🙂

That would put the...........
