The whole rape case saga was disillusoning BE. I had an illusion that most people would not prejudge. That they would give Brett a fair go. That's what us Aussies do, right? That only a small minority, mindless yobbos, would jump to conclusions. That people generally would be too smart and emotionally balanced to be blindly led. I was wrong. 100% wrong.Such a beautiful picture becomes so heartbreaking in light of what he has become.
I thought at the time of the court case that he was being wrongly advised to hang on to resentment. Yes, a dreadful thing happened to him and was exacerbated by the media and NRL. That degree of extreme public (and wrong) judgement would, unimaginably, damage a person.
It did seem to me though, that he was encouraged in his resentment: not talking to the media, the ongoing feud with Gallop.
Of course this was justified but I think smarter guidance would have encouraged him to move forward and not fester.
I think he became bitter and I've noticed in life that once a person becomes bitter, there is rarely a return.
Maybe @Rex could comment.
I mourn the loss of the Brett of this picture.
I can't imagine how a young man copes with what Brett faced. Being presumably advised by lawyers to say nothing. Having no voice. And very few willing to back him in the face of the onslaught.
I'm not inside his head, so don't know. But the indicators do suggest you've got it right BE.
