Salary Cap Witch Hunt. **Appeal unsuccessful**

So Penn last year told us we did nothing wrong and nothing to hide now yesterday he states this.
"The allegations are technical issues that perhaps weren't done appropriately.

"But it has never been anything more than that."

That is classic politician spin talk I may try that with the tax office next time . So let's not call it a witch hunt it appears from the owner himself that we have cheated. We may like to call them "technical issues" but if it was any other club we would be calling it what it is cheating the cap.

No wonder we were reluctant to hand over our phones and computers we didn't want to be exposed for these "technical issues"

Very disappointed with the administration of the club.

Once all is clear - put the $600,000 towards a Marquee signing for 2019 and beyond, the whole issue already cost Pearce who would have been a quality addition, but Hodgkinson....prefer to trust who we got already.

The true value of signing Hodkinson isn't that we want him to partner Cherry in the halves. That role can just as adequately be filled by either Hastings or Croker. No, the value is that he would give us some much needed experience as a cover should anything happen to DCE. Unfortunately outside of our team captain, right now we are extremely light on for seasoned NRL experience in the halves.

As it stands, if anything happened to DCE (worst case he has a season ending injury), we'd have to rely on halves who between them barely have a third of the first grade experience that he does. Now I'm not saying that the guys we currently have couldn't handle it because they wouldn't be there if they couldn't do it. But at least if we did have Hodko he's an experienced head that can lead our relatively young side around should Cherry be unavailable for any reason.

Now, as for the salary cap.....I really didn't see anything in the article posted that Penn hasn't already said before.

I agree that Penn is taking a very diplomatic approach. He is not coming out with guns blazing and using more assertive language. Ie. Vigorously denying all wrongdoing. Whilst I agree that everyone "technically" rorts the cap and we are being singled out, IMO Penn is basically carrying a barrel of lube to Greenturd and wheepishly bending over ready to accept whatever punishment is coming. I hope I'm wrong and our proud club exposes the Nrl scum and inequitable practices.

Almost every club has been guilty of 'technical' salary cap breaches and judging by the quantum of fines imposed some have involved rather big bucks.

Which suggests that acknowledging the possibility we have committed such breaches is hardly bending over for Greenberg, merely being practical and realistic. On the contrary, it's obvious the club has stood up to the NRL's breach notice, and I would be greatly surprised if a lot of our objections are not eventually conceded by the NRL.

Asking for another week to make sure everything is right is a good move as obviously we have some evidence to back up any ‘technical issues’.

I would rather our chairman be honest that there are some issues that need to be addressed as opposed to denying everything and then getting smashed by the NRL.

Rules are open to interpretation and i’m sure every club pushes the boundaries to gain any advantage they can.

Scott knows we will cop some punishment and it’s a no win situation if he takes on the NRL he will lose, NRL have deeper pockets. Whether you like him or not he is keeping our club afloat and is doing whatever he can to keep us competitive. That 2015-2016 period was very difficult with the Penns becoming the majority shareholders, choc, foz and co. so i’m not surprised that there would be some issues to address considering the massive cleanout we had.

But if we've breached the rules, what are you expecting him to do exactly?

Doing something wrong intentionally or unintentionally is still doing the wrong thing.

This is all about reducing the punishment to as low as possible so we can spend as much as possible .
I really don't know how to answer that. If we have breached the rules then we should accept the punishment. BUT if the breach is such that others have also been guilty of but haven't been pulled up by the NRL then he should make a stand. You cannot have one set of rules for some and not the others. He should bring these issues at the forefront of the response, especially how our name has been dragged through the mud for such a long time.

Don't you just love the Rorters - have hired a salary cap expert to put to bed those nasty rumours of salary cap rorting and that expert is none other than ....................Ian Schubert. Yep, that will certainly put those rumours to bed alright.
As if Easts would ever report anything negative.
The 'findings' would already have been written. Just now to fill in some of the bluster and the report is done, ready to the released to an eager media.

Really? I have followed your posts/contributions, and to be honest, I don't think much of what the Manly Sea Eagles have done in the past would impress you.

So, a local fan , a granny, who is an ex lawyer, decides to sponsor some players via a third party agreement. The officials see her at the game, and invite her into the sheds as a bit of a thankyou. Since any TPA is to be at arms length, Greenburg slaps Manly with a salary cap breach, as there is now a connection between Manly, and the Granny. And you call this cheating? I call it, a technical breach.

Maybe the franchise should be desolved, and the club shut down forever, such is the nature of the crime (Granny seeing the boys in there budgies). This smacks of a Greenburg agenda, and nothing more, but, Penn is probably thinking its not worth fighting a battle that he can't win, so will wear a small penalty for the stability of the team.

Again. Am I missing something. Didnt the dogs have to release players to stay salary cap compliant, and now they just sign some wiz kid for 440,000 for 3 seasons. Man am I confused and yeah now the rorters have Schubert there now to make sure no one finds where the brown paper bags are kept. Its like a slap in the face to our club in my opinion

Can I ask is that what this is about ? The granny lawyer being a 3rd party sponsor being invited into the sheds to meet the players she is sponsoring and then that's the breach and a breaking of the rules?
Surely there must be more to it than that ,that just smells of a Grennhunt(silent C not included) stitch-up

Why because I don't believe the spin coming out of the club like you? As I said any other club and you wouldn't be looking for excuses and calling it "technical" you would be calling it cheating because that is what it is. I'm a fan of the club but unlike some I accept that we could cheat just as other clubs have, what's so hard to believe about that?
You remind me of the person who complains about the drug cheats at the Olympics and want the book thrown at them yet when an Aussie is busted it's just a "technical" breach or a headache tablet.
Cheating is cheating "technical" or not. I have and always will love the club but I'll call it for what it is cheating (and I'm not pre judging us I'm going on the owners own words he and you may call it technical I won't).

A technical issue?

Sounds like Penn is using the CBA's one off coding error Austrac defence for 53,000 breaches of money laundering reporting obligations?
