Rest in Peace thread.

Phil Donahue, whose pioneering daytime talk show launched an indelible television genre that brought success to Oprah Winfrey, Montel Williams, Ellen DeGeneres and many others, has died. He was 88.

The cause has not been disclosed at this time, though his family said in a statement first shared with NBC’s The Today Show that he died Sunday and was suffering from a “long illness.”

He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and attended college at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. He started broadcasting in 1957 at a radio and television station in his hometown.

Donahue was the first to incorporate audience participation in a talk show, typically during a full hour with a single guest.

“Just one guest per show? No band?” he remembered being routinely asked in his 1979 memoir, “Donahue, my own story.”

Two of his co-stars from the latter are still
with us: actress/former model and Miss America, Lee Meriwether, and fellow time tunneller Robert Colbert.

How did they always manage to have the same long sleeve polo's and pants cleaned and ironed in every episode. Loved watching the reruns of Time Tunnel when I was a kid back in the 70's.

Also was in Star Trek Deep Space 9 and TJ Hooker with William Shatner. Was a handy singer too. I think he sang the Gidget theme.

I also wondered how he and Robert Colbert landed in a new time so neat and clean. The Time Tunnel must have had a robot dry cleaner.

Lee Meriwether was a bit of a hottie as well back in the day. I think she subbed as Catwoman in the Batman movie when Julie Newmar was unavailable.

He was 93.

A few months ago now (April) but I just saw Aust Chef Ian Parmenter passed away.

I used to enjoy watching his 5-10 min cooking shows when I was a kid (before they all had to be drawn out competitions).

I think the comedy company, or fast forward used to do a spoof of his show where 'he' basically drank a litre of wine every episode...

  • Chef and broadcaster Ian Parmenter has died, aged 79.
  • He was best known as the host of the ABC TV's Consuming Passions between 1992 and 2001.
