Refs think they are rock stars

The refs are incompetent and human error will always be part of the game, but the edict to manage games from annersley et al and the changing rules/grey areas//interpretations/inconsistency is what gets me.

They need to strip it all back, the coaches need to coach to the spirit of the game rather than looking for competitive edge ( cheating) in everything. Commentators need to not dwell on mistakes made in real time. These two things would have a massive effect on things

Simple rules for a simple game.

Penalise obvious forward passes. They will stop

Walk off the mark - penalty

Feign injury- go for HIA.

Get the rubbish out and we have our great game still there

Ps the pass by south’s was forward and the one the ruck before to give them field position was even more forward.

The knights end of game was a debacle

The complete non-policing of walking off the mark has become a total blight on the sport, as has not touching the ball with your foot in the play the ball.

The biggest problem the NRL has is selectively policing whatever new rules they invent each year, and ignoring rules that have been around for 100 years.

As expected, Annusly defended the ref on all controversial incidents in the Cronulla V Newcastle match. After listening to his diatribe it seems we all now need to carry a copy of the rapidly expanding NRL Rule Book to understand our sport.

No surprise it was Gerard Sutton reffing. He pulls the blocking penalties out of his arse, but with 5.29 secs on the clock Newcastle kick off. One of the Newcastle players closest to camera (McCarthy?) was at least 2 metres offside. I played it back to see where the officials were. Sutton is behind the kicker looking to his left, the touchie was down at the dead-ball line.
Earlier in the year they had a weekend of cracking down on that. Then it’s onto the next selective ruling. As for Annersley he is up there with Peter Beattie as the biggest bullshiiter of all time.

The game is so over refereed these days.

I despise this 6 again rule which really is at the discretion of petty refereeing and used as a tool to even up a game when one side is over dominant.

The cheating and feigning of injury now is a huge blight on the game and players are now coached to stay down in the tackle and wait for the bunker to give them a penalty. You saw the other week a Canberra player stand still for 30 seconds after the ref told him to play the ball.

The refs are not allowed to make significant calls without the bunker now and as fans we wait for up to 2 minutes for a decision.

You see the obstruction rule being adjudicated so inconsistently now and the blockers stopping players trying to stop a field goal well that is too little too late.

I think there needs to be a reset on how the game is officiated. The best game of this year, state of origin 3 was a great game as the officials let the players decide the game, too often in club football, the referees interfere with games and change matches!!

With regards to Will Kennedy being offside ... apparently under the rules the bunker is run by, they aren't allowed to adjudicate on players being offside in that situation.

How stupid is that?? He is clearly offside, but they have to give him the penalty because they're not allowed to rule him offside.

And then they wonder why there is confusion...................

Pappy on Talkin'Sport said similar the other day - rather than let the game flow it's like they find reasons to pull something up.
He likened it to a game of Gotcha.

Absurd when you think they check if runners are behind kickers before awarding tries. Who makes this stuff up?

Wouldn't it be great if we tried a few games (it would probably have to be pre-season, or end of season no impact games) without any bunker at all. Just have the referee do his/her job. Guess what? They'll get some calls wrong. So what, just move on. The fans will bellyache for a while until the next dud call comes along. But I can cop that knowing it is a decision made on first and only sight of the incident rather than pouring over multiple camera angles, wasting minutes of everyone's lives to still arrive at the wrong conclusion. We're being tied in knots at the moment with ridiculous calls, the blocker/field goal calls being the latest in a long line of decisions which only cause more separation between fans and officials

Exactly.

Completely disagree. As frustrating as rulings can be, I'd so much prefer the use of technology than depending on some human to make decisions in real time with so much going on, let alone personal biases and subconscious bias. Can you imagine a single ref trying to rule on potential offsides, obstructions, grounding of the ball... and all of that in a single play within seconds... no way! It will create far more frustration and contraversy. They need to learn to use the technology smarter, IMO.

Gee. How did the sport ever survive without technology?

Re tech

Depending on getting the camera angles (which seems to be the biggest cause of delay) I am in favour of system where there is a time limit to decisions and if it is inconclusive advantage goes to the attacking team.

Would help keep the game moving a bit more

As for the "standard" or otherwise of ref performances / making themselves the star I would say for a complex very quick game the standard has improved a hell of a lot

It was the NRL (well, the NSWRL) who've caused this field goal blockers rubbish.

Back under the 5m rule days, it wasn't just the defence who had to be back 5m from the play the ball, it was the attacking team too.

But they knew best and got of rid of it.
