Refs think they are rock stars

These touchies running in and carrying on is giving me the đź’© as well. Get off the field and stay off.
Yes, I've always wondered if the players ever take any notice of them when they come in and raise their hand in an upward motion.

The refereeing set up and the judiciary need to be completely rebuilt. The referees should not be permitted to interpret the rules that job is for the NRL. If the refs need clarification in respect of interpretation they should be approaching the NRL and not making it up as they go. The refs job is to apply the rules. The NRL foolishly over empowered the referees with the 6 again rule. On one hand the NRL are trying to focus on player safety and then they introduced this rule that exposes players to greater risks of injury due to fatigue and having to tackle for set after set because their side is attracting the focus of the referees. A perfect example was Thursday night when Manly got belted in both the penalties and six again calls and were forced to play a man short for 30 minutes. That is madenss.

Teams should never ne expected to play a man short on the field, there are 17 in the side and both have an 18th man if they loose one of the 17 as a result of foul play. If a player is sin binned or sent off then their should be required to play with 16 players rather than 17 otherwise the contest is destroyed. Look what happened in Origin 1. People pay too much to watch a contest only to have it ruined. This rule has not changed since 1908 the game sure has!

The Bunker needs to be reeled in and be stopped from interfering in general play. It's use should be only for confirming if a try has been scored after only viewing the play in which the try is scored. If they can rule on players being off side when a ball is kicked then they can rule on a forward pass.

But the ball went 10 metres backwards. It was knocked backwards by a defender. It was the cheating Clunker that agreed with the cheating ref that it was this mythological "loose carry". There is nothing in the rule book to say how tight you have to grip the ball. If the ball goes backwards it is play-on.
Agree, it seems like they think they only have two options - penalty for a strip or knock on ( loose carry).
The ball went backwards, Guac didn't lose it forwards, the defender's hand accidentally knocked it out of his grasp so why not just call "play on".

Is there another sport where the on-field ref has so much to say?
As soon as the whistle blows the RL ref is yelling instructions. I appreciate that they have call out the number of tackles (although this could actually be done from an off-field official via a microphone). But then it's "Milking", "Surrender", "Wait", "Let him up Jake..."
I'm waiting for a RL ref to be forced to retire because of a sore voice box!
I'm also anti the way the refs use each player's first names. Numbers should suffice: "Number 13, maroon" etc.
A ref/umpire is there to make rulings, not give instructions. That is the coaches' job.
I do think a RL ref is expected to do too much. Reducing the onus of teaching players the rules on the fly would lessen the ref's load and lead to greater clarity in decision making.

With the six-again call being the biggest blight on the game today. Refs are able to signal six more tackles on the run, without even having to explain to the players or the crowd why, and completely change the momentum of a game on a whim.

This 110%

A lot of the 6 agains are also coming from the bunker clowns in the refs ear telling them. It seriously needs to stop , there is too much outside influence on the refs. They're trying to make a perfect result out of an imperfect game. Bunkers should rule on tries and stay out of the rest.

Credit to Franz Kline tonight. After that first penalty against Paseka, I was thinking… here we go. He pulled his head in and largely let the game flow. Thank you 🙏

Canterbury still won the penalties 7-4, and at times the ref and sideline officials must have incorrectly assumed that the Dogs were a gridiron team.

I loved the part where Klein gave 6 again, Canterbury kicked it, we gained possession then he blew a penalty because the bulldogs didn’t hear it

I’ve never ever seen that before and sets a dangerous precedent. What about advantage calls and held calls. It’s a slippery slope

It's a sad state of affairs when Ashley Klein is our best option for a decently officiated game. Yes, he's terrible, but he's still the best of a universally s**thouse bunch.

Agreed, but given the recent debacle of officiating, I thought he was reasonable last night
