Recruitment and retention 2022

If we really needed to shop Marty, which I hope we do not - I wouldn't mind Aaron Woods. Relatively modest contract, vast experience, he's huge and seems pretty durable, nothing dynamic but churns through metres and can offload, doesn't appear to be an idiot, and could be highly motivated to put in a cracker 2 years in the hope of finally winning a premiership. (Prefer to keep Marty though)

Hey feathered friend , I hope all is well with your family in lock down time
If you are having a bbq at your place let me know 😉
The Marty perspective ...

2. Addin Fonua-Blake
3. Payne Haas

4. Jesse Bromwich

5. James Fisher-Harris

6. Sio Siua Taukeiaho

7. David Klemmer

8. Daniel Saifiti

9. Junior Paulo

10. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves

Stats are all well and good, and those are all good players.
But from games I watched last year James Fisher-Harris was clearly the best prop in NRL last year, and he's not even on that list!!

I hope we retain Marty and Dylan

The rest , “ thank you for your service “.

And with that coin , buggered if I know !!

Fullback is obvious but we won’t get a good one.

Maybe another forward as you can never have enough of them.

Firstly, fantastic, well thought out post mate, as always. I absolutely think we can manage with absolutely no signings for next year, while letting Sironen, Taufua, Funa, Gosiewski & Boyle go. That being said, I think we need to release Suli (someone like The Dragons / Broncos would snap him up with us carrying no freight - and he'd get game time).

To be better, you need better quality depth. For that reason, some of the players we consider amazing in the team today, should be depth tomorrow. Here is my fist 17:

01. Tom Trbojevic
02. Jason Saab
03. Morgan Harper
04. Dylan Walker
05. Reuben Garrick
06. Kieran Foran
07. Daly Cherry-Evans
08. Marty Taupau
09. Manase Fainu
10. Taniela Paseka
11. Haumole Olakau'atu
12. Josh Schuster
13. Jake Trbojevic

14. Karl Lawton
15. Sean Keppie
16. Josh Aloiai
17. Andrew Davey

(possibly the best bench in the league)

That leaves guys like Lachlan Croker, Brad Parker, Ben Trbojevic, Christian Tuipulotu, Tolutau Koula, Kurt De Luis, Toafofoa Sipley, Zac Saddler, Sione Fainu, Kaeo Weekes, Alec Tuitavake as depth.

Pretty amazing squad right through. And that's with 0 signings (external) and using players money to upgrade other contracts (possibly even FRONT ending some contracts).

I'd also extend Taupau for another year (at least).
Agree that 17 is probably our strongest out of current squad more or less. I'd probably start Vera and play Marty off the bench. Stagger him and Paseka to maintain that punch through the middle.

Only thing I'm not convinced on is I don't think Des is big on Walker going back to centre. He hasn't played him there all year from memory and same last season. I know he was covering fullback in his first stint, but he seems content on playing him off the bench since his return. Maybe the litmus test will be when Schuster is back, as I think that Shoe or Lawton then become the bench utility. Where will that leave Dylan ?? Do you think Des drops Parker or Harper to keep Walker in the 17 ?? Be a big indicator of whether Walker gets a contract extension - seeing as both Parker and Harper have been shown some love.
Team selections over the next couple of weeks will be interesting as we get troops back

The moral of the recruitment and retention story is

There is always room for improvement in our cap roaster

Contentment breeds complacency and comfort zones stalls progression

For those that are passionate about training in the gym they would understand
what challenging your self to keep improving means there are no limits to excellence

This no limits to excellence applies to our playing roster . In order to keep up with the best teams we should keep raising the bar of excellence on every position on the field .

Raising the bar does not always mean raising the dollar to attract better value players
As value is not always the highest price but the higher quality performance value player

Contentment breeds complacency and comfort zones stalls progression

I turn 60 years of age this month and I am an example of what striving for excellence is as I keep putting complacent comfort zone 20 year old to shame in both body and performance

I hope I can inspire all the mature Silvertails on here that
We are not our age.... We are our ENERGY

So let us all get ENERGISED and eat healthy and hit the Gym and give those young punks a run for their money !!!

Sorry I made a paste and copy error . JFH is on the list now . There are young up and coming props that make descent metres that are on value contracts

As a SuperCoach nut I watch the work rates and minutes of all front rowers. What you’ll find is that Des uses a different strategy to many coaches. The guys listed in this top 10 list all play 55-60 minutes, some more. Most of the time, the Manly front rowers play 45-50 minutes.

That would have a big impact on their stats.

I understand what you are saying . Marty has been one of my favourite players and he has been awesome at his peak . I think we can get better value with smart recruitment for 800 Grand a season
