Recruitment and retention 2022

PS forgot to add, a player like Douehi at the right price would be good too - assuming we can't get the upside Walker and Suli have the potential to bring...

Supposedly broncos offered 330k which is huge value... 500k would be the max

The problem is that this would potentially turn Schuster off - if he never properly got the position he wanted and left we’d be a shambles again
His manager is asking $400K. Given Foran is on $250, the money we save either downgrading or parting ways with Sirro and Walker pays for a $150K upgrade for a marquee 5/8 who is also the best available back up fullback the game.

If Josh ever watched Glen Stewart play I don't think he'd be too offended? Literally have the ability to copy and paste our game plan from 10 years ago, the Turbos are already replicating Stewart Bros plays. If it's such a big deal put the 6 on his back, play him in the Glen Stewart Role and Hynes can wear 13. The number on the jersey means nothing. He'd be playing as a right side pivot.

All the rage at the moment is bringing a half or skillful lock on and having three play makers. We have a premiership winning blue print, how we ran our attack in 2008 was devastating then; under the current rules it will be even more potent.

The only player I would touch from the dogs would be renouf atoni. Napa will struggle to find another NRL club I reckon. I reckon we should try and poach marata nuikore and Isaiah papali'i from the eels.
He's at a struggling club with a terrible coach. I think we could get him cheap and Des could get more from him than what he's currently showing. Low risk given he'd only be on about $200-$300k max

And I read somewhere the other day he wants out, his sick of losing and wants to play in a winning side.

Obviously $$$$ needs to be taken into account but I think he represents value and can deliver above what we could possibly sign him for.

So below we have the current top 30 squads status for next year (and beyond).

Now we all know that contracts are a fluid thing, but currently only Boyle, Funa, Jetski, Siro, Horhay and Walker are not signed for next season at this stage. Apart from Walker none of them have figured heavily this year and we haven't struggled in their absence. As much as I love Horhay I'd quite happily say we could do without signing any of them beyond this year. We have the following development players that I'm aware of

Sione Fainu2021
Alec Tu'itavake202120222023
Zac Saddler2021
Kaeo Weekes20212022

That gives us some depth in the middle forward role if one of those 3 hit the development marks - Saddler already has had a crack. So Boyle is covered.

Outside back depth may be a bit skinny if we lose Funa and Horhay - but with Tippytoes, Weekes and Koula you'd hope one of them could camp on a wing and make a reasonable fist of it

So does anyone expect us to be in the market for a decent signing for next year ?? If we let Siro, Walker, Jetski and Jorge go we'd have a bit of cash to splash on at least one decent player you would think. What area do we target ??

If we are extending Harper and Parker then that says to me Des is happy with them as centres. I'm not as convinced - would love a good strike centre. But maybe in this modern game they aren't as crucial as attacking weapons as they once were. Solid defense seems to be the key metric for centers. But if you look at how Turbo and Latrell dominated origin at 3 & 4 then you can't deny you can still win games through your centres. We only have Suli for depth there at the moment too.

Maybe a strong running edge backrower. Guac has one side stitched up, do we try and get a left side back rower ?? I see Davey's future as a middle forward and that also frees up Shoe to be bench utility or 6 if Foran goes down. Or do we stick with Lawton as edge / bench utility in rotation with Shoe ?

I notice that Connor Watson is unsigned for next year. I reckon he is a great footballer, I'd love to see him at Manly. Not sure what you do with him other than plonk him on the bench at full strength - but he can cover 9, 13, 6 and probably even 1 at a stretch (although he has bulked up a little too much these days). He has the game to play PVL ball

I’ve been really impressed with all the re-signing news recently. I think we’ve locked down all the essentials.

It’d be nice to re-sign Walker, Saddler and Sione Fainu, but the rest can go.

I like Watson too, but he’s surplus to requirements if we have Lawton and Walker in the squad playing a similar role. I also believe he’s looking for a starting role which we can’t offer.

It’d be great to sign a backup fullback.

Imo we really need a backup (specialist) fullback in the squad next year. It would also be a bonus if they could play wing
Yes we do. But it's unlikely we can find a place for them in the seventeen, so anyone who is half decent won't be that keen to come across to us. Our recruitment decisions on Parker, Harper, Garrick mean that out centre/wing combinations for 2022, are basically already in place. If Walker takes up the reduced contract offer he will do so knowing he is potentially our fourteen for most of 2022. That means he and Garrick will be our fullback cover for 2022 as well. We already have Koula waiting in the wings (No pun intended) and Tuipilota in the mix as well. Do we need to recruit any more outside backs? If so they will be for depth only, considering we have so many utility players to choose from on the bench for 2022 already. (Croker, Lawton, Walker). This assumes Fainu takes the nine spot back in 2022. We have no room in the squad for any more utility players. No player wants to come into a squad where they spend most of the season being cut the night before game day.
It looks likely that Boyle, Gosiewski and Sirro will be the only current players that won't be resigned. Based on that I hope we resign Sione Fainu and Saddler and bring them into the 30. Funa will also be kept as depth. That only leaves one spot available and that needs to go to a good quality, young backrower lock that could also cover centre if required.

We need a better back up fullback..maybe another centre. where that comes from at this stage I have no idea. Isaako would be a good option but that means Garrick misses out in my opinion. I still like the idea of signing Billy smith and am quite eager to watch him play tonight. If fainu isn't cleared we may need another hooker.. other than I think we're good. Get rid of suli

1.Trbojevic/ Isaako
2.Saab / Tuipolotu
3.Parker / Smith
4.Harper / Walker
5.Isaako / Garrick
6.Foran / Schuster
7.DCE / Cust

Billy Smith could be a good pickup. That immediately puts Parker to Blacktown. Unfortunately, we are stuck with Suli for 2022. No other team will take him from us. So he also remains centre/wing depth though he is no longer suited to either role. Personally, I think Suli needs a stint in Blacktown in the forwards. If he wasn't so bloody lazy he could make a good forward. Isaako would be great on a wing but this simply won't happen based on our recruitment decisions so far.

Surely someone would want him at half price... if he was on 200k you would keep him. But he isnt

Firstly, fantastic, well thought out post mate, as always. I absolutely think we can manage with absolutely no signings for next year, while letting Sironen, Taufua, Funa, Gosiewski & Boyle go. That being said, I think we need to release Suli (someone like The Dragons / Broncos would snap him up with us carrying no freight - and he'd get game time).

To be better, you need better quality depth. For that reason, some of the players we consider amazing in the team today, should be depth tomorrow. Here is my fist 17:

01. Tom Trbojevic
02. Jason Saab
03. Morgan Harper
04. Dylan Walker
05. Reuben Garrick
06. Kieran Foran
07. Daly Cherry-Evans
08. Marty Taupau
09. Manase Fainu
10. Taniela Paseka
11. Haumole Olakau'atu
12. Josh Schuster
13. Jake Trbojevic

14. Karl Lawton
15. Sean Keppie
16. Josh Aloiai
17. Andrew Davey

(possibly the best bench in the league)

That leaves guys like Lachlan Croker, Brad Parker, Ben Trbojevic, Christian Tuipulotu, Tolutau Koula, Kurt De Luis, Toafofoa Sipley, Zac Saddler, Sione Fainu, Kaeo Weekes, Alec Tuitavake as depth.

Pretty amazing squad right through. And that's with 0 signings (external) and using players money to upgrade other contracts (possibly even FRONT ending some contracts).

I'd also extend Taupau for another year (at least).

I agree with all of the above! I like that 17, and good back up in reserves. I would keep marty around for another couple of years as well. That 17 is very good. Very good team harmony as well.

Weekes has to be the player to develop into back up full back, unless Garrick is replaced but he has really impressed me on the wing lately. Strong finisher these days and looks faster than ever - just not a full back.

For mine we do no re-sign Gosie, Sirro, Funa, Boyle and Jorge.

Saddler steps up to the top 30 and either Alec or Sione (whoever you think is most ready.

That replaces two of the forwards. So leaves two backs and a forward but I think our squad was back heavy this year so I'd look at two forwards and a back.

Tex Hoy is off contract and a great option a fullback who can also cover 5/8

As for forwards perhaps Egan Butcher as a youngster backrower.

Them I'd be looking at a bit more experience on a cheaper deal. Wouldn't be an exciting name but someone you could rely on if needed......not sure who.

Also if you could shift Suli do so
