PRE-GAME DISCUSSION: Souths v Manly [Round 15, 2020]

You mean not drop the ball cold, kick out on the full, put up stupid bomb that give 7 tackle sets and the game away, throw sh*t passes that miss the receiver, miss simple tackles, don't keep a straight defensive line, give away stupid penalties and set restarts.
that sums it up

Forum posters are not stopping cherry from using his outside backs more. They have some attack , not naturally gifted with pace or step but they still have tools.

For the record , a top half can be out of form, which equates to trying things that work but getting caught or throwing a poor pass or something. Getting tackled before you slip the ball or something. Not trying to run to the line to kick or run when you are the most experienced and touted number 7 in the comp

Cherry has attempted more in the last few weeks but for the firts 12 weeks he sat back and did less than cronk did in that gf when he was completely busted.

Trying isnt tackling when your a so called premier half. He has had halfback coaches, foran as an example, player with thurston , cronk, smith and has had an absolute masterclassin experience and exposures
There is a big difference in trying and failing and not trying tomake things happen

One contract that sets him up for life. he looks semi retired most weeks

Point taken James. But the ball to he outside backs is usually via 5/8

When was the last time you spotted Cade Cust on our right edge ?? That side is DCE's sole domain, he runs the right side attack - no point trying to blame Cust for lack of options or lack of tries down that edge. That's like trying to blame Parker for Suli not getting the ball on the old inside / outside centre formation.

I'm trying, obviously with difficulty, to show we have NO ball players in the side of quality. DCE and Cust are very similar types of players, good attack and defence, but not good at getting the ball to the backs with space or creating uncertainty in the minds of the opposition. Its all very predictable and consequently we see little penetration in the backline. Again I say our last ball player was Green, who go the back line moving. I know I'm harping on this point but we have a ball player in Schuster wearing his shorts out sitting on the bench. He needs to be in the side.

Agree
Basically , for the very good sides , it’s a game with two halfbacks,.one running each edge.

”Five Eight “ probably only applies now to sides that have a “running” five eight. In other words “we want another crafty ball player on the other side but don’t have one”..

The running option rarely works.Wighton is a good one.
Thought Dylan was pretty good last year too.
Other than that if you are stuck with one playmaker, and an average hooker , you are basically totally ****ed., especially if that sole playmaker is struggling.

Let’s hope Cade kicks on.

In our 2 points loss last week all that has cost us the game

I am old enough to remember a half called Jonathon Thurston who spend a decade playing in a **** cowboys team. Played a couple of years in a good team and won the GF and will be an immortal.
Point is a half cannot win games consistently on his own. Joey Johns was probably the closest to having that ability.
You mean Joey Johns the one who admitted taking drugs during most of his career? Sorry I have zero respect for Johns......Immortal my ar$e!

Not defending him, just pointing out he had the ability to win games on his own

The only true Immortal is our very own Incomparable Immortal

Funny I recall comments such as every player in the top 30 is important to the squad and crucial to the team's chances. But this year we have only used 23 so far. The coach must not consider all of the players in the top 30 to be good enough for first grade and therefore not good enough to be in the top 30. So there clearly must be friction between the coach and the decision maker in respect of the roster and the cap. Looks like Hasler v Penn II - Rumble in the Jungle.

Take out Fainu, and the only players who haven't got a run are: Musgrove & Smith (obviously not good enough), Hopoate (we've been over this ad nauseum), Metcalf, Trex and Toff (a little surprising, but we have had quality in the middle and no real need).

People seem to think we have a team of superstars in the background who can't get a game. There isn't beef between Des and the Penns - this is what we have to work with

Won't argue with you re Schuster - he could be the next Gift. DCE does his best work when he takes on the line. Ironically this year that has been when he has flipped over to that left edge in attack on and off during the game. He has built a good little partnership with Jake just on that left fringe and has run straighter at the line. However his efforts on the right side are still a cluster of crabbing sideways - refer other thread "Trust Me"

musgrove left before he even got to manly. Smith went a month or so ago to queensland
