PRE-GAME DISCUSSION: Souths v Manly [Round 15, 2020]

Come on Biff. He's the Premier half in the game! He will come up with the goods on the weekend, just wait
There is a bloke running around out at Penrith who I think is the premier half in the game at the moment, superb consistent kicking game, runs the ball well, good passing game and is doing a good job with his leadership qualities.

DCE is a fair bit off this season and despite the injuries around him his kicking game is down. The coach ain’t helping him with the team selections either.

Recently? Any Recently like the last 7 games?

He's playing in a side that relies almost entirely on himself and the forwards in attack. He's the sole play maker and easy to shut down because there is no one else making that sort of an impact. Even despite not being as dominant in recent weeks, he's still one of the best players performing we have on the field. You want to find blame, I would suggest unlucky injuries to our other two main attacking weapons and Des for not introducing a couple of game breakers, who just might have turned things around.

All you have to do is look at the try scorers in this side since Turbo and Walker have been absent. Only 6 of the 25 tries have been scored by the three quarters and full back. That's a most disturbing stat. It says two things. There is little effective attack in the outside backs, and they are not getting quality ball from inside eg the 5/8. Cust is a fine attacking/defensive player, but like Croker, like Walker, he doesn't have the distributing skills to set the back line alight. We haven't had a good ball player since Green and that puts pressure on the forwards and DCE

Yep, Metcalf is definitely too small for FB, and tbh no point playing him if he's not here next year.

Ryan Papenhuyzen: 181cm/80kg, first grade debut at 20yrs of age. Wasn't considered as "too small" and given a chance.......he's been killing it since the get go.

Matt Dufty: 179cm/83kg, made his first grade debut at 19yrs old. Wasn't considered "too small", shown glimpses of talent early on (scored a try on debut against Manly.....booooo..lol). Now, fulltime fullback carving it up!

Luke Metcalf: 183cm/84kgs. Hardly not the smallest fullback running around....oh hang on......waiting to have a run. Tore up the 9's and that's about it.

Dessie, give the 21yr old a chance to see what happens. We may have a hot Papenhuyzen or a steady Dufty on our hands.
Just sayin'

well nothing adventurous again this week .... maybe after we lose this (most likely but I love surprises), and our year is done Des will give some our young talent a chance to show what they got in NRL .... I'm an optimist

Have you forgotten 'Mighty Mouse' the best tiny fullback to ever has graced the hallowed Brooky turf.

Good points on Pap/Dufty who are fullbacks by trade. However the problem with Metcalf is that he's a halfback/5-8 by trade. He's only played fullback in a couple of games for Blacktown last year in a side that came stone dead last.

I remember in the Sharks trial earlier this year he played a bit of fullback and he was rag dolled even more than Elliot and Garrick

Forum posters are not stopping cherry from using his outside backs more. They have some attack , not naturally gifted with pace or step but they still have tools.

For the record , a top half can be out of form, which equates to trying things that work but getting caught or throwing a poor pass or something. Getting tackled before you slip the ball or something. Not trying to run to the line to kick or run when you are the most experienced and touted number 7 in the comp

Cherry has attempted more in the last few weeks but for the firts 12 weeks he sat back and did less than cronk did in that gf when he was completely busted.

Trying isnt tackling when your a so called premier half. He has had halfback coaches, foran as an example, player with thurston , cronk, smith and has had an absolute masterclassin experience and exposures
There is a big difference in trying and failing and not trying tomake things happen

One contract that sets him up for life. he looks semi retired most weeks

I am old enough to remember a half called Jonathon Thurston who spend a decade playing in a **** cowboys team. Played a couple of years in a good team and won the GF and will be an immortal.
Point is a half cannot win games consistently on his own. Joey Johns was probably the closest to having that ability.

Its nice when a halfback wins you a game but its not my expectation. Thurstons contract was an issue up north in attracting the players they needed to supplement his skills.I know this for fact.

Manly are flogging the forwards silly because our 5th tackle options and general kicking is the worst in the league. The desire to build pressure does not seem evident at all.

The forwards need someone to kick them out of trouble a d we have the best kicker in the game with the worst kicking game.
Does our game manager need to be hooked up remotely to a game manager for ideas

Footy hasnt changed that much. Since ricky stuart, greg aleaxander and shifty sherwin mastered the torpedo with the old pigskin the kicking game has been a major part of every teams chances.

Looking at the two lineups, our pack should dominate, especially if AFB is included in the final 17.

Nothing fancy is needed from our backs, all they need to do is just be solid and we should come away with the win.
You mean not drop the ball cold, kick out on the full, put up stupid bomb that give 7 tackle sets and the game away, throw sh*t passes that miss the receiver, miss simple tackles, don't keep a straight defensive line, give away stupid penalties and set restarts.
