PM had lunch with jailed porn king:

report By 7News

The Prime Minister is facing new political pressure over reports he attended a fundraising lunch with a Brisbane pornography millionaire, who has since been jailed.

The Federal Opposition today attacked Mr Howard over the reported presence of Scott Phillips at the lunch in 2004.

Mr Phillips was jailed last year after pleading guilty to violent crimes and had already been charged at the time of the lunch.

Brisbane's Courier Mail reported Mr Phillips was a late inclusion among 20 guests at the gathering to raise funds for then Liberal candidate Andrew Laming.

Mr Laming has been facing his own problems after police raided his offices as part of an investigation into the use of politicians' printing allowances.

The Opposition today claimed Mr Howard had a case to answer, after the government's own attacks on Labor leader Kevin Rudd and his meetings with disgraced West Australian Premier Brian Burke.

"These are allegations in the paper this morning," Shadow Treasurer Wayne Swan said.

"The Prime Minister's got an explanation to give, to uphold the standard that he set."

The newspaper claimed the meeting took place at the Sirromet Winery at Mt Cotton, Queensland, in July 2004.

Guests reportedly paid about $2000 to attend the lunch.

Mr Phillips, who made his fortune from pornographic websites, pleaded guilty in April 2006 to charges including torture, robbery and grievous bodily harm against two people he believed were behind a 2002 burglary at his home.

Well so John Howard is human afterall. Fancy that. I am sure that he has been to lunch with tens of thousands of people in the past 35 years since he has been a poltician but I am sure he doesn't remember 99% of them..

He would't be an Australian male if he hasn't watched pornos, been to a strip club and drank beer.

Anyway it was the porno guy who bought a ticket to have lunch with howard. if Howard has invited him to lunch then it would be a different story

The issue is that he raised an absolutely ludicrous proposition that any politician would be aware of every participant at any function and got Campbell to fall on his sword for something so incredibly trivial it beggars belief.

This story is a joke, the actions of the PM and his motly crew (especially Abbott and Costello) are a joke, and to expect anyone to know attendees at a function is a joke.

That is why I can't stop laughing. The people is not being fooled.

Mb, tooks has pictures of little jonny on his bedroom wall so i wouldnt bother.

he made the call, killed one of his ministers careers over it and should therfore place the same rules on himself as he has everyong else.

It is not up to the prime minister to check out who is at lunch it is up to his mnders. It is a fund raising lunch and politicians don't care who attaneds as long as they pay their money.

Fluffster - have you ever paid to go to a lunch and known every person there? I doubt it. I have been to lunches at the Newport Arms and have know some unsavoury people to be there. It doesn't mean that I mix with unsavouy people all the time. They just happened to be there at the same time I was.

I am sure that even labour politicians have had unsavoury people at their lunches too.

Brisbane's Courier-Mail newspaper reported today that Mr Howard attended a July 2004 luncheon at Mount Cotton in Queensland at which porn mogul Scott Phillips was a guest.

Phillips was one of 20 people who paid $2000 a head to dine with the prime minister.

"Of course it was unfortunate that this guy was at the Howard lunch, but it doesn't mean that the prime minister willingly associated with dodgy characters.

"I've just had breakfast with 60 drug dealers because I've just come from a gathering of 60 pharmacists."

Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews also jumped to Mr Howard's defence, saying the prime minister had no idea Phillips would be at the lunch.

I'm not a howard fan.. but tooks has a point... this is just a reason to have a go at him.
You think? !!!!

Hello, superior higher echelon thinkers of the site that is silvertails. You are missing the point. ALL the attacks are absurd, just little Johnny started it. I couldn't give a fig what any of them say now - it is just plain funny.

I'm not a howard fan.. but tooks has a point... this is just a reason to have a go at him.

You obviously missed the whole Rudd and Bourke rubbish that was everywhere in the news the past week or two.

I have a photo of John Howard with the notorious illegal immigrant and Chinese gangster Jim Foo (think the cash for visas scandal).

But I'm saving it for closer to the election.

Release it now while it is a hot topic!!

Tooks- The issue isn't tat the guy was a porn king, but that he was also a convicted criminal. I still don't think that is a big deal, but seeing as he just sacked a minister for inadvertantly meeting with a criminal then the fact that he was in the exact same position surely exposes his hypocrasy.

Ahhhh sorry, i'm with you now!!

I didn't miss the Rudd/Bourke crap but it just didn't ring any bells when i was reading it.

Sorry, yeah howards a wanker.. carry on

it doesnt suprise me that those that vote for howard cannot see the double standards he is setting here.

I was surprised so many missed the parallel here.

Howard and cronies launched an attack on Rudd for the exact same thing. So essentially he either has to honour and back up his words or he has to apologise.

Basically little Johnnie was given just enough rope here

I thought the whole Rudd Bourke saga was more along the lines of Rudd saying he did not know Bourke was going to be there when Bourke had sent out invitations saying that Rudd was a keynote speaker.

I agree that Howard's stunt in sacking Campbell backfired big time but there are a few more shades of grey involved here
