NRL club on the chopping block for second Brisbane team

Rugby league broadcaster Channel 9 wants to kill off an existing NRL club to make way for a new Brisbane team in a move that could leave one of Sydney’s nine traditional clubs facing extinction.

The network wants — and is likely to get — the competition changes by 2023 when the next multibillion-dollar TV broadcast deal is in place.

Channel 9’s director of sport Tom Malone has told The Sunday Telegraph the network was against increasing the number of teams from 16 and wants at least one club to go to accommodate a new team.

“That could come from another team being relocated there, or better still another club being discontinued and a new club established in Brisbane,” Mr Malone said. “In a perfect world you’d probably have one or two less teams.

“What clubs should go? I’m not going to get into that one. It’s a hard decision but probably one that needs to be made in the longer-term interests of the game.”

The NRL has set up an internal working group to make a detailed analysis of potential new markets. An interim report will go to the independent commission in October.

Cronulla Sharks, Manly Sea Eagles and Gold Coast Titans would be most in danger if Channel 9 gets its way.

A decision could be made as early as December on the future make-up of the competition before negotiations begin with the broadcasters.

Foxtel chief executive Patrick Delany also wants a second Brisbane team as part of the next broadcast deal but does not support moves to kick out a club.

“They love their rugby league in Brisbane and it seems a natural fit,” Mr Delany said. “You get that inter-city rivalry which enhances tribalism and that’s ultimately what we want.

“It’s all about generating more fans and bigger TV audiences. I don’t know if you’d get that real tribal traction with rugby league in Perth that you’d get in Brisbane.”

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg met Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Friday to discuss the viability and gauge support for a second Brisbane team.

TV bosses believe two Brisbane sides will create a rivalry to match the A-League Sydney FC versus Wanderers derbies or the AFL’s Perth-Adelaide inter-city showdowns that attract massive crowds and ratings.

There are fears that there are not enough quality players for an extra competitive team. Channel 9 insists a team should go instead of having 17 teams and a bye each week.

“It’s for other people to decide but it’s not just about having enough quality players,” Mr Malone said. “It’s about coaches, support staff, administrators. And more clubs and more games just adds more cost — but is unlikely to generate any incremental revenue.”

The broadcasters carry enormous influence in the game. Without their $2 billion investment, there is no game.

However, the NRL is likely to stand by existing clubs, not wanting a repeat of the angry protests when South Sydney Rabbitohs were dumped 20 years ago.

I think its time we killed of Nein to be honest! They have had their time! This is where we will truly see if Greenturd is fair dinkum about protecting the Sydney clubs who remain the fabric of the game!!

For the record if you are going to move a club, the bleeding obvious is move the Titans to Brisbane because they have a culture of total failure!

Greenburg has no interest in the game of rugby league. For him it’s just another business. A sports based entertainment product optimised for advertising (ie gambling) revenue. He will do what ever he thinks will increase viewing numbers and advertising dollars. He will use the fact that Manly games draw the smallest viewing audience (hard not to when they never get free-to-air coverage) as a reason to close us and start up another franchise in an area where he expects there will be more gullible sods who will put their pay checks into TAB tickets and shonky insurance schemes.

Have a go at this muppet. Let me see if I understand this ?

Put a line through a traditional Sydney team, alienating thousands of fans.
Start a new team in Brisbane whose fans will all be coming from the existing Donkeys fans essentially not growing the fan base at all.

Does anyone really think the GWS fans are anything but former Swans fans that live in the west ?

These idiots don't care about the game and especially couldn't care about crowds and fans. All that matters is TV audience ! And how good will that look without an ACTUAL audience you numpty ?

I know they won't cut Manly, but if the unthinkable happened and they did, I'd be done with NRL. I wouldn't simply support another team. I just couldn't. I'd become like those Newtown and Bears supporters. And I'd just go and support Sydney FC like I do in the summer and give all my membership money to them.

The stupidity of these TV execs is mind boggling.

Seriously ... Ch 9 only broadcast a couple of games a week ... they are a junior partner with a diminishing audience ..... someone should tell them we don't give a flying fig what they think ......

I am sure Ch7 or Ch 10 would be happy to pick up the free to air contract ..... ,

Woodsie it’s not just 9 I think fox have a similar view. Can’t see how they could axe either manly or sharks and retain the Titans.

You may be correct ... I don't know ... but I would have thought fox would want more games .. eg expansion ?

Titans won't last, move their licence north

It seems obvious that the ****ans go but fear Peter V'landys, if he is a Manly hater we will be gone.

He is seen as the greatest leader since Churchill, he will decide so many of these issues.

Both 9 and Fox are dying, pay TV in this country is almost dead in its current format, as are newspapers.

Kayo and the likes are the future.

I honestly just don't get it.. Does the TV broadcaster tell the afl, NBA, NFL,nhl etc etc how many teams they can have, how many games they must play etc etc? Or does the sporting organisation control all that and the broadcaster pay for the right to air it?? I don't know how it all works, but it seems to me like ch9 run The nrl, which is pathetic

The Licence is held by Penn and he would fight to protect his investment.

Other Fans love nothing more than watching Manly lose so I hold no fears about our demise 🙄
