Game Day: Manly v Dragons [Round 15, 2018]

Not that i expected much from the presser but judging from Baz’s demeanour you’d think we only just lost that game. I get his point that Kelly got bundled over twice and Thommo again stopped in the line etc but that’s not good enough as it happens every single week.

As much as i agree with Baz that having development players in your cap should be allowed to be used when required but the stupidity of carrying only one specialist hooker to begin with is so short sighted that it’s laughable. In a squad of 30 players you should have two teams plus a couple of extras.
There are a few clubs that only carry one specialist hooker in their 30 man squad

Tommy!! @BOZO - you got it!!
Thank you feathered friend .
Its nice to see our young and talented players like Tom Wright get an opportunity and show us what they can do .
Once again today we saw that we are capable of doing good things as individuals but as a team we cant put it together for the whole 80 minutes .
We look like a team of out of tune musicians that are not gelling together
and our coach is the conductor

It was a solid 35 minutes to start this game, Thommo was so unlucky not to score the first try and credit to Dufty it was a great tackle to deny him, the first turn of the game was the ref giving them another set when he ruled that we played at the ball and the result was back to back tries for them as they took advantage of the possession.

Tom Wright did the most positive thing I have seen from a Manly player in weeks, took on things and scored a breathtaking try. What did we do next? Well instead of building on this our five-eighth kicked the ball dead when looking for the sideline and gave the Dragons the initiative for the rest of the half and the inevitable try followed!

We start the second half coughing up the ball with our first two sets and then the try that is conceded when a Dragqueens player does NOT play the ball in the lead up to the try scored by Widdop! The rest of the game is Manly chasing their tails, making more and more errors with the ball and conceding soft tries.

I saw the Turbos giving it their best and trying so hard, I again saw our halve fail in a big way to impose themselves on the game, I thought Joel Thompson was good for us but the fact is we have too many passengers and we have not resilience or character to deal with decisions that go against us.

The game is up for Barrett!! play some younger players or Perish. Bite the bullet and get rid of the players who are NOT performing. The glimmer of hope that we saw from Tom Wright surely proves my point!!

It was sad to see a game that we started with such promise fizzle out into another black day for the club!!

Tom Wright and Parker should stay on the bench

Aaand Tom scores a try. Trust. Still, that defence prior was unforgivable (from both players)
Game Stats
Parker missed 3 tackles
Tom Wright missed 5 tackles
Brian Kelly missed 6 tackles .

Thank you red wine for allowing me to think changing my back back to a Manly win would pay off.

sigh.

Kicking game for the first 60 mins let us down again. Need to build more pressure with repeat sets and try some attacking kicks.

Those missed tries really hurt. We score a couple in that second half and we might have got a come back going. Not to be

I always shy away from putting lipstick on pigs and gilding the lily but reality is we played team number 1 with no injuries and with the luxury of having a winger on the bench who in our team w/b 1st picked as our winger
Secondly we have had a ton of injuries and just plain bad luck
Thirdly Our marquee player is down on form and luck
Fourthly I do think our coach is very conservative or maybe even a bit slow but probably still learning
However I really liked wat I saw from Tom Wright and even though Turbo probably needs to straighten up a bit I thought there was a lot to like about our attack but not much to like about the finishing
I think Mat Wright did well even though he isn’t a hooker
TB said he is going to keep pestering the NRL for Manu which if he succeeds w/b great for next year
So although we lost and there was some atrocities in our game and defence
I think it’s an interesting puzzle that our coach has to fit Walker, and Tom W into that back line
I still think DCE goes missing a bit when we r in the attack eg in 2nd half we were on thier line and Mat W had no one to pass to as DCE was loitering directly behind him flat footed, that’s when he has to be on point !!!
Lastly there are some great individuals in our team but Barret has to get them to play as a team, that ingredient is not there atm
Just my thoughts
Go Manly
Good point about dce. He is at his best when on point with the ball and running, when he catches the ball flat foot he looks lost and tries to create something. Not his style. Tom wright at least attacks moving forward. Trent is just too slow and thought he would of done a bettet job of organising and kicking. But he just plays in slow motion and turns the ball back inside.

Even with possession going against them in the i st half [ 58 - 42 ] and some very average defensive efforts that allowed the three first half Dragons tries, Manly seemed still well in the match . D C E clearance kicking at least improved in the i st half but no attacking kicks and yet still more counter productive and intended touch finder kicking again really proved futile . Why has this been persisted with , i am at a loss to understand [ and with Hodko "s effort late in the first half , a real turning point ] Then of course the early second half errors and break down in team co ordination just set the negative trend again . Thought that Suli was very solid until he went off and was really missed and Tom T just needs that additional bit of finesse and the better results from his exceptional ability should come . Also really just have to continue using the big men coming of the pass close to the line or Thommo a bit wider . one of our definite strengths at the moment , as a lot of the other attacking plays continue to be too predictable .. Season "s long done of course but for the team's on going competitiveness , really hope that Fainu can get his clearance , Having both Matt Wright and Hodko sharing the 9 is just too ordinary and Tom Wright should be in the top 17 somewhere Dragons this year are a hard side to contain and again Manly did do well to stay with them for an extended period and with a bit more resolve in defence and some more smarter and better structured attacking plays , they could have really pushed them . Very unlucky with their two disallowed tries and the scoreline did not reflect Manly "s better effort but again quite disappointing that with so much individual talent and ability still in the side , just failing on some basic fundamentals continues to cruel their winning chances and opportunities .

Keep scrolling on my above link to Tackle Efficiency

Kels 81%
Brad 76%
Wright 63%
Jorge 44% :tmi:
Those statistics including yesterdays 6 tackles missed by Kelly was the most tackles missed by all the backs . Correction missed by any other player in the game is the reason our team lingers at the bottom of the table .
Tackle Efficiency ?
The measuring stick to greatness in defence is to compare against great defenders and not weak defenders

Kelly missed 21% of his tackles

Tom Wright missed 33% of his tackles ...

Kelly made 23 tackles ... Wright made 10

Kelly missed 6 tackles ... Wright missed 5.

Wake up punchy .... you are speaking crap

So many here are so sensitive. Kelly has improved dramatically in defence but 6 missed tackles does hurt the team. So it's not a case of "picking on poor Kelly time" simply by virtue of stating the obvious. Kelly has had a season and a half under his belt and I'm sure Tom Wright's defence will also improve given the opportunity . What I do sense though is that Tom Wright is a game changer. He needs more time to develop in fg.

I'm not meaning you specifically @BOZO because I do tend to agree with you that defensively, last night Kelly was pretty poor. Whichever way you look at it, 6 tackles is a lot for any player to miss in a game of rugby league.

But I have always found it funny that those who accuse others of being keyboard warriors are usually doing so from their own keyboard.
