Manly coach Des Hasler’s contract described as ‘biggest disaster I’ve ever seen’

Andrew Webster had a somewhat less hyperbolic reaction:
'It’s a complex deal for a complex coach at a complex club.'

There has to be key performance indicators in the contract. The challenge for Des is will he adapt and change things if things continue to slide or will he again stick with tried and trusted failures when younger players need to be given a chance!

Well one thing we know it will only be one persons neck on the line if it doesn’t work.

And when exactly is that? When Silvertails says so??
I'm surprised to see this line still being trotted out. I'll now call it the zombie argument, because if it wasn't killed off by the Hoppa Jnr debacle last year, clearly it can never die!

I started to read the article and then noticed it was written by Paul kent and just closed it. He is the bloke wet behind the ears

I hate sticking up for Kent, it's against everything I stand for.🙂🙂.....

But given Des's record as a "bird in the hand " sort of coach with his infamous back ending contracts.... I can see the danger of allowing Des to make short term decisions to achieve a short term objective ( such as running 7th or 8th ) which would then keep him his job ??

Do you reckon that bodes well for Schuster or the next young player on the horizon trying to get into the team over a more proven and experience but mediocre player... when Des 's job depends on it ??

Yes we'd probably all settle for 1 year of making the 8 in 2022 given the complete sh*tshow we are now witnessing.... but is that the best platform for the future.

Understand many will disagree but that's my 10 cents.

We should of got rid of him and replaced him with Flanagan.

What we really need is Sheik Bin Al El Ramen of some Emirati nation that wants to throw a billion dollars our way , new stadium , new coaching staff , poach all the best players , buy Foxtel and have a dedicated Manly channel , make memberships $1 and pay @Dan to run the digital side of the business !!

Oh happy days !!!

Oh and **** Nick Politis , ours is bigger than yours.

@Mark from Brisbane unfortunately we are more like "****e in the Bin Limp as a Ramen Noodle", using shopper dockets, playing out of a quarry, paying a coach's pension, buying/paying broken and suss players, watching a test pattern, paying $75 for nothing and Dan has quite rightly got other things on his mind!

Please. Hoppa last played at 16 after two ACLs and two years out of the game and that is your evidence to make your point?

Plenty of teams bring in young players 18+. Penrith did it on mass around three years ago and have had great success.

You don’t do it for the sake of it, but if the more experienced players are consistently under performing and you have genuine talent in your younger squads (which we do), you should inject them into the side and give it time.

No zombie argument, just common sense.

All teams need balance and usually that means including a couple of younger players.
We've got Schuster (19), Saab (20) and I'll also count Cust (22) because he's played less than 20 games, nearly all of them off the bench.

The point is that experience is also vital. Almost every player takes some time to learn the harsh lessons of footy at NRL level.
Garrick and Parker are actually good examples. Both played strongly a couple of years ago as youngsters in our team, and actually got picked in minor reps sides.
Then, whether through second year syndrome or just oppositions working out their weaknesses, they now seem pretty darn ordinary.
But do you really think they are worse players now than they were in 2019? They aren't worse, they are better, but if they aren't at and can't achieve grand final winning quality then we''ll replace them at some point.
That point will be when we have someone better. Not just when we have someone younger!

I agree the team needs balance. That’s completely appropriate; however, dropping Garrick, moving Walker to his best position of centre, bringing in Olakau’atu (when available) won’t disrupt that balance. We still have Jake, Foran, DCE, Marty, Aloiai, and others.

People point to Hoppa as a failed experiment because he played poorly in four games. These other players have played poorly for over a year and aren’t a young guy trying to acclimate.
