Manly coach Des Hasler’s contract described as ‘biggest disaster I’ve ever seen’

Im actually enjoying a few of the ex players (Cronk/ Alexander) ripping into these opinionated blokes, who generally have an agenda behind the stories....journo's are meant to create drama and stories which I get, problem is, they tend to take aim at cerain clubs and protect others which get's annoying.
Kent is a qualified expert on what it takes to run a successful football club. He played one game at halfback for Parramatta in the eighties.

Edit-he played in nineties-even better.

I can’t watch him. He thinks yelling is entertainment. Shame because I like Ikin.
As an aside, Toovey is heading in the same direction. Someone has told him that his brand is crazy yelling. Quite embarrassing.
Sadly Tooves has become a bit of a joke since associating himself with that Fox crew.

I like how the bring Lara in once a week to 360. I think last year when Kent was loudly interrupting and speaking over her. She directly went him in a polite but firm way “can you please stop loudly speaking over me and let me finish what I’m trying to say” or words to that effect. Kent shut up but u could see he was fuming.

Kent is a gold plated ****wit but two things are obvious , and unfortunately it was Kent who pointed it out and this gets dismissed as rubbish like most of his stuff.
But he’s right this time

-
1. We need a long term strategic plan and roster adjustment

2. Des is under pressure fir short term success with new contract

Two issues flow from that -

We will have no long term planning. Next week is the holy grail.

Des will not risk youth over guys he thinks are first graders under the new rules (-guys who are failing , many of whom he extended ) in the pursuit of wins.

I have no real issue with resigning Des if it’s part of a long term approach with the coach along for the ride and a total revamp of our football department and roster management. We have great juniors - there is plenty of hope if we do it right.

This is just asking for trouble.
If what seems likely to happen this year ( bottom 6) actually happens it will be an unseemly brawl at year end for sure and Manly once again in the basket case category a la Barrett. Not what you need to attract players, and we need a couple badly to foster these kids through.

Again Kenty makes a very good point .. and we want to shoot the messenger .. because .. we don't like him ...

The contract extension was stupid and unneeded as many on here had already pointed out ..

Possibly.
In saying that he has what 2 full seasons to play finals. In the scheme of nrl coaching, that’s not that short term. And with the roster we have when fit, finals should be very real each year.

also if Des contract is short term and results driven, why would he persist with plodders who ain’t performing on the field? Wouldn’t that give him more incentive to put in new young players? He also can only pick from the top 30 so it’s not like he’ll rush a young kid who’s way underprepared in.

you may well be right with the above and I do see both sides to the argument. Especially around the long term planning. I just don’t think it’s the headline old Loyd Christmas is carrrying on about.

Also do we have any idea about the finer details of this contract in particular around recruitment, retention, contract negotiations etc? Or more importantly does Paul Kent.......

Paul Kent is a journo who's craft is sensationalism. I don't consider him nor Ikin as experts of the game. Without seeing the contract I'm not sure how he can credibly criticize it. Personally i don't believe Des deserves an extension full stop.

I very much agree.

We've lost 12 from our last 13 games (including a trial)
Few more losses sees us equal our biggest ever loss streak
We've just suffered our worst ever first round defeat
There isn't a win in sight
AFB asked for a release, Thompson decided not to extend
This is the worst defensive streak in the history of our club (2nd worst ever)
So many off field issues (Fainu, Hopoate, Walker, Trbojevic)

Why do you extend that contract? Fear of backlash?

Show there's SOME level of respect. It's at a point, a few of our players could walk on the field, sit down the whole game and continue to be picked (hyperbole I know), but wow.

Mick Cronin commented on the state of journos and ex player commentators last week. Was pretty good. Saying he despised ex players becoming over night experts and tearing current players to pieces.

Mick Cronin Interview

Like Mick Ennis, the only reason he has a premiership is because they cheated...he isn’t even in the class of the better hookers in the game, but feels entitled to rip everyone

Hey @Ryan I remember you posted something a few months ago after you had a chat with Steven Humphreys and if a recall correctly he left you feeling good about where the club is heading? I wonder what has happened and why there is such a disconnect between what we see and what he sees? I struggle to get remotely excited about the short term or long term future of the once were mighty Sea Eagles.

There was about three games to go in the year at that time, and he told me that they were about to announce signings, that would make people stand up, and see the strength they have in the market place. He said the results weren't acceptable last season, and that it wouldn't happen again.

He also told me a focus was to get Des coaching staff on point for this season.

Since that time:

We lost Joel Thompson, Corey Waddell & acquired Andrew Davey
We lost Addin Fonua-Blake & acquired Josh Aloiai
We lost Brendan Elliott, Sam Smith, Albert Hopoate and signed Jason Saab
We re-signed Manase Fainu awaiting serious charges
We signed Karl Lawton with a season ending achilles tendon
We signed Kieran Foran, who in my books has been terribly slow

We haven't won a single game. And he's re-signed Des to an extension.

Ahh yes.

Putting in a clause saying sacked if you dont make the top 8 - disastrous! Because every single club in the comp doesn't have this as an unwritten law in every coach contract...

He's one of if not the worst media commentator i've listened too in the sport.

How dare Manly cap their downside and enable no payout for Des if hes sacked early! Its especially stupid considering Des took the Bulldogs to court! Oh wait... it makes sense?

God hes a vermin.
