Manly coach Des Hasler’s contract described as ‘biggest disaster I’ve ever seen’

Manly made the call to end its swirling drama by handing coach Des Hasler a contract extension. The details are reportedly “dumb, dumb”.

Manly ended months of uncertainty by announcing a new contract extension for coach Des Hasler last week — but the new deal has only plunged the club deeper into the mud.

Mystery surrounded the veteran Sea Eagles mentor’s contract for months before it was finally revealed Hasler has signed a two-year extention through to the end of 2023.

However, reports quickly emerged that the deal includes a clause that will allow Manly to terminate the final year of the contract if Hasler fails to push the Sea Eagles into the finals in 2021 or 2022.

Reports last week claimed Hasler can even extend to 2024 if the Sea Eagles become contenders.

The clause-loaded contract comes after Manly were belted in their season opened against the Roosters and were beaten in a Brookvale Oval quagmire by the Rabbitohs in Round 2.

The complexity of the deal — and the Sea Eagles’ ability to effectively terminate Hasler’s contract at any time without suffering a massive pay-out — has left the contract described as “the biggest disaster I’ve ever seen” by Fox League NRL 360 co-host Paul Kent.

Kent told Triple M rugby league the fine print in the contract was “naive” and “dumb” from the club’s perspective.

“It’s the biggest disaster I’ve ever seen, that contract.,” he said.“You don’t put performance clauses in saying the club can sack him. In the old days clubs would come out and say, well he’s got 12 weeks, or the board would say he’s got six weeks.

What ends up happening, and I say this respectfully about Des, but if you’ve got performance clauses that you have to reach, you’ve got to be coaching towards them. You’re not coaching towards the long term success.

“You take short cuts for the short term. It’s a dumb, dumb move. You either back the coach or you sack him. You don’t go half way.”

Kent said the deal appeared to be the result of club owner Scott Penn interfering in the decisions being reached by the board and chief executive Stephen Humphreys.

“The decisions to me smell of naivety,” he said.

“They’re wet behind the ears decisions. They’re the decisions you make that look good on paper, but when you boil them down, they don’t make sense.”

Kent claimed it leaves Hasler being more tempted to cut corners with things like the return of star fullback Tom Trbojevic from injury.

Hasler, meanwhile, was positive about the club’s future and the stocks coming through the ranks.

Hasler said he was pleased to have reached the new deal.

“I am very glad to have the opportunity to continue working with this high calibre group of players we have now and those who will emerge in the near future through our Pathways Program,’’ Hasler said.

“I am confident of delivering further success to the Manly Club. There is a great future ahead for the Sea Eagles.”

He then took charge of the Canterbury Bulldogs for six years before a messy divorce, where the coach took legal action to get a $1 million payout.

Manly finished 13th on the NRL ladder last year, winning only seven games in the 20-round season.

The club has struggled without superstar fullback Trbojevic, without whom it boasts a pitiful 29 per cent win rate under Hasler’s guidance.

I'm on record as saying that any employer is crazy renewing or extending a contract for work to an employee who is failing in his or her job, which DESpicable clearly is.
Why make a decision now? It's not as through DESpicable would be in high demand ATM.
If the team's performance continues its downward spiral then his work at Manly should have ceased at the end of this season; his contract would have ended. If, on the other hand, the team shows improvement and there is hope of a revival in future years then, and only then, should he be offered a new contract.
The club has jumped the gun.
'Someone' once said "Rugby league is a results driven sport". It seems that this criterion doesn't apply to every coach though.

That's what I kept saying. It's like going to a house auction when there are no other bidders and opening with your best offer.
I cannot understand why they'd resign someone after Round One, when there was zero prospect of another team showing the slightest interest in him. We were already his last chance saloon.
I'd be very interested in the comments re Penn overruling the CEO and board. Will this never end? I know - not while the Penns are around.

Paul Kent is a typical Media Drama Queen that puts bread on his table by putting over exaggerated headlines on line

Dumb Paul Kent Quote ...
"It’s a dumb, dumb move. You either back the coach or you sack him. You don’t go half way.”

Des is in his 3rd Year and we have gone all the way to given him an extended contract to prove himself and have backed him to do what he does best and that is lift his players and lift our Club

Unlike Paul Kents club Parra who have disgraced their club and supporters with the most degrading wooden spoons our club has high standards that we must maintain
Because if we keep dishing out these record breaking loses we will be getting our first wooden spoon

I have been a great admirer and supporter of Des but I do not support this rubbish that he and his players are dishing out tarnishing our proud winning history continuing to lose by record scores and Manly fans cannot remember the last time we won at our sacred home ground

Note to Des and all is overpaid and under performing players

Raise your standards because your comfort zone has just ended !

I see this as Kent indulging in some typical Manly bashing to make a headline. This is merely a glass is half full view of the contract. Anyway what club doesn’t sign on a coach not to the make the finals? In Dessies case he either has to do it this year or next to obtain a future extension and really what coach is not already under this kind of pressure regardless of their contract terms? If he wanted to be real he should be looking at Trent Barrett’s contract with the dogs,. As if twenty would not be applying a short term view to obtain any kind of result. Kent has shown what a complete amateur and light weight he truly is with this article.

So Kent has a copy of the contract? Obviously Manly or Des or the lawyers deemed it ok to pass on a confidential document to Mr Kent for his perusal lololololol......
He’s read the whole thing including the ‘fine print’? Wow what a lucky journo to be afforded the viewing of this confidential document. I’m guessing it must be the norm when a player or coach signs a contract that a copy be given to journos to read & approve. The wanker is all talk & has NFI what’s in the contract & is just making drama over nothing......typical inept & BS journalism from inept & BS journalists.

You could see he had the sh...s last night. He was spewing about Kaufusi only getting two weeks. He wasnt happy at all lol. Maybe Dessie,s contract upset him lol
I can’t watch him. He thinks yelling is entertainment. Shame because I like Ikin.
As an aside, Toovey is heading in the same direction. Someone has told him that his brand is crazy yelling. Quite embarrassing.

Pros and cons. Bit (very) dramatic. It also promotes accountability.

Im actually enjoying a few of the ex players (Cronk/ Alexander) ripping into these opinionated blokes, who generally have an agenda behind the stories....journo's are meant to create drama and stories which I get, problem is, they tend to take aim at cerain clubs and protect others which get's annoying.

Really....’the biggest disaster I’ve ever seen". Clickbait Kent at it again.
Na that’s not not Paul Kent at all..... Probably a few stories broken recently he’s not been a part of. He needs to one up his journo mates somehow. Outlandish headline follows. Guys an idiot
