Didn ;t realize how well Johnny Gibbs was going that year . Great player then Steve Whiz Martin on the scene also. Same with Max Krilich and John Gray as hookers although Gray played his fair share at prop . Ray Higgs a good addition until injury . Steve Knight and Simon Booth were real handy inclusions , Bruce Walker and Ian Thomson went to another level and apart from all of the other top level players , the ever reliable Ian Martin . Great side , great year for the Sea Eagles

Round 10 v CS
plus NSWvQld
1st grade bounces back to form and a loss to the 2nd's. All teams positioned well on their respective tables.

What I got out of this thread is that there were some gorgeous Queen of League entrants that year. Some nice mini-kinis there. Pity nowadays women are so scrutinised for being beautiful and strike more militant poses rather than the natural poses of back then.

So much unfair pressure on women these days.

I can remember after that loss to Balmain freaking out that Manly would miss the finals. My memory is Manly were down to about 8th or 9th then and a loss to 1st placed Wests would be the end of the season! But clearly I've imagined the whole thing as they were no lower than equal 5th place. Never realised Wombat seemed to miss a lot of games that season.

On 4 July Manly beat Souths at Lang Park in the Amco Cup. On 19 July it was a Manly win 27-10 vs Brisbane Easts at Lang Park. Manly lost to the Roosters 14-2 in semi final on 2 August. A heavy schedule. 1978 Amco Cup - Wikipedia

Round 20 v NS
A big win to Manly however Norths had 2 players sent off. Was this the game to turn the season around? Manly in 3rd spot with a game agaisnt 1st placed CS followed by 6th placed ES led by some guy called Fulton.
2nd's won leaving them in 6th spot 1 point out of the 5 and to play 3rd placed CS and 10th placed ES. The U23's won and still in 3rd spot and still to face 8th placed CS and 5th placed ES.
It is a great part of the season when your team is in contention.
Lets go Manly!

Big win for MW, allowing WS to jump to 1st spot.
2nds had a draw, still on 6th. If 1st Balmain beat 4th St George next week and MW beat ES there will be a play off for 5th
U23's had a win, remain on 3rd spot.
AND will Price sidestep Hartley

Round 22 v ES.
1st Grade is starting to take shape, cleaned up the Roosters with Randall leading the charge. Finished 3rd on F&A and line up to take on CS next week in the Preliminary Major Semi
2nd grade recorded a loss and finished 6th after what seemed to be a promising start to the season.
U23's lost and finished 4th losing that all important 3rd spot and a "life" if you lose.
Rick Chisholm voted the player of the U23's.
