I got branded a troll before by Ryan for pointing out his serial pessimism but I'm not whining about it.

Serial pessemism? Please point out where. I think I've been way more positive than most around these parts lately.

I'm not going to go trawling through years worth of posts just to establish a pattern that has been there to see for everyone who has been reading this forum (and the old mwse forum) over a long period of time.

I have vivid memories of you being very down on our side even in premiership years, particularly in early 2008.

I find some of the points of view very interesting regarding @Pappa Knight.
On one hand, many seemed positive and thankful to have him posting. But the danger for him (and why I suspect parents and family of players don't post) is that as soon as he heard something negative about his son, it may have angered or upset him.
There are several theories to the Liam Knight story, but to date there is no outcome to these theories. Whether he wants to stay or not will ultimately come down to money and opportunity. If he has indeed done a deal or even hand shake deal with the Roosters, then things will take their course.
Criticising him and questioning his loyalty, especially being so young, is poor form. He will never let his mates on the paddock down!
On the other hand, comments from some that he has not proven himself is bang on the money. He has not.
I suspect that we may not see any further interaction from Pappa Knight, which is a shame. He obviously is very proud of his son and should be encouraged to participate in the forums. However he must be prepared for all sorts of criticism from the armchair fans. Some are so personal in their attacks on our past and present players, that really, it goes a little beyond useful constructive criticism. As a result the forum members start tearing each other to shreds for fun and ridicule.
It's gonna be a long season, and we will all have a day or night where life is not going so well, and that spills over into a rant about your favorite footy team, and what pisses you off.
Let 2016 be a year where some respect to your fellow posters is encouraged.

I know in the past I have absolutely given it to one polarising member on here, and despite the fact that most of what he said was outright nasty and often untrue, I modified my views to accept that he had different views on certain subjects.
Passion is a very useful tool for life, however it sometimes lands us in a world of bother, especially with introverted, quiet PC types.
Have fun this year guys, but play the man a little less, and learn to forgive the odd crazy rant that may at the time ruffle your feathers. It also does not hurt to apologise for such behaviour if you overstep the mark.

Thanks for the entertainment & may we devour Dessies crew at Brookie this Friday night and launch a great season ahead.

Well, thanks...I guess...@:p To be fair, you certainly gave as good as you got mate.

But in essence, what you said is true & correct. Forget that the player involved here is Liam Knight, and / or that his Dad posts. That wasn't the sentiment I was trying relay.

What I'm saying, is given the direct example of what happens when there is a publicly unhappy playing group (like we've had for 2 years), the media will destabilise, and use any unfavourable commentary to blow a situation up.

If a player states, "yeah, I'm talking to a number of clubs" that can be construed in many, many ways.

These players need to look at the sports in America (shocking, I know). I'm sure it's actually the player managers driving them a certain way, or demanding that they make a specific comment, but there is a lot more etiquette & privacy around things pertaining to commitment to the club that is currently paying their bills. Heck, it's also much nicer to the fans that get attached to them.

And I'm not naive enough to think that I'm sure people (Zorba - coughs*) share things with his buddies in the media, so I know there is issues there too.

Maybe I'm wrong, but every player, from Jamie Lyon, through to kids in SG Ball surely have to understand to be truly successful, you all have to be pulling in the same direction? A united force.

That's not telling people your looking around the opposition for potential destinations for your future career, surely?

That's why this off season has been such an absolute pleasure to experience. Comments by Lewis Brown, Brett Stewart, Jamie Lyon, Trbojevic (1 & 2) etc etc etc. Just feel united and that there is harmony again. Heck, there was an article about this in The Manly Daily only recently.

So I apologise @Pappa Knight, @maxta, @Rex & others if that wasn't the message I was getting across. It's just that I almost walked away from the game as a whole after these past two years of disharmony. That kills a bloke.

As I've said, I hope Knight stays on and becomes the next Jason King for us ! True legend of the game in my books.

Despite some varied viewpoints about Liam on here I think Pappa Knight will be fine, he appears to have a great temperament and sense of humour. He didn't have to come back on when the talk was about potential other clubs, but he did, and was honest about Liam's preference to stay and his own knowledge of the negotiations.
And when Liam signs with Manly, rather than closing this thread down, maybe it might just go on to rival Foz and DCE's threads in five years time.:)

People (including me) can sometimes say some pretty stupid, mean-spirited and disrespectful things face-to-face. Even more so behind a keyboard. Any of us can. Passion can do this to us. And passion is no excuse for rudeness.

We see a crucial missed tackle, get frustrated, and conclude a player is "lazy". As if we've suddenly become world experts in mind reading. And as if there's no other possible explanation for what we see.

Or we decide a player or official should follow our concept of loyalty or fair play and then have a dummy spit when they choose their own direction - as all of us must do.

Maybe we should think of the wives, parents and other rels who might visit this forum. If we wouldn't want what we're about to publish be written about our son or daughter, then maybe it's time to take a breath and reconsider whether to hit that post button? And to rethink what we want to say and how to best express it?

After some of Wiliame's performances last year I don't know that even the knowledge that his grandmother might be reading would have stopped me from saying that he wasn't a first grader's a-hole.

100% true
Plenty of posts I have given myself an uppercut shortly after....pressing the button.
I think most here have done it, as Manly supporters are a passionate bunch with that us against them mentality.
Not good when it is us against us, but adds at times, humour, emotion & integrity to this site....personally it's my favourite site & interesting to have so many different views & varied opinions.

Forums are forums. It is what it is. They're here to learn a little about the footy. And a lot about the posters.

Some internal compasses feel compassion for grandmothers, mums and other loved ones. Others want to stick it up them I guess.

I expect a player's pride, passion and loyalty to the club to be evident in their performances for us. And also in the way they conduct themselves as representatives of our club. That is the only time it should matter to us. They certainly shouldn't be derided for negotiating their futures. A player should first and foremost do what is best for them. It really is none of our business.

To go off like little girls because of what is written in the DT defies logic.

Liam has yet to prove how good he is. That will come this season. His next contract will obviously be based on what happens over the next several months. Good luck to him.

Agreed. When individuals here donate their tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of dollars to Manly, no strings attached, then they might have some tiny amount of credibility to argue that players should not negotiate hard in their tiny window of opportunity to earn a living out of the game.

Otherwise zilch credibility.

The only thing Rugby League and Rugby league forums need to succeed is controversy.

Without it, neither are worth two bob.

Rex, you know I organised a Corporate Box for three seasons at Brookie?

I also organised a meeting with NAB and the CEO Pat Wilson to discuss being the major sponsor, but NAB decided to sponsor Souths instead because of the relative pitches? (Grant Mayer told me he was filthy about that).

I also organised, paid for and directed that 10,000 signature petition that was professionally bound and provided to Grant Mayer, who took it with David Gallop and Graham Annersley to see Morris Iemma to get 10 odd mill in funding.

I've also been a returning season ticket holder (which I share with other fans on this site - including giving away gear for free) every year since forever.

Does that allow me to ask that if a player negotiate a contract, they do it in a discreet way, so that paying fans aren't upset and disappointed?

Like I say, handle it like they do in the States.
Might surprise you to read that footy players aren't above anyone else, and they don't need your protection. Your preaching in this thread, over and over.

It's a valid point that players are too flamboyant in the media with their negotiations. You trying to belittle me as an individual in how I post or share an opinion doesn't change that.

How many segments on NRL 360 etc were there criticising the way DCE was so open and loose with his negotiations.

Simple comment: My manager is handling that. I just play footy, would be professional and acceptable. Talking to a number of clubs doesnt express desire for Manly now, does it?

Here is what I said that got you riled:

Having paper-thin ego issues again Ryan? Wanting to make this all about you? Wanting to brag?

There's only two options here:

1. That description doesn't fit you

If so, there's no reason at all to get offended.

2. The description does fit you
i.e. You are arguing that "players should not negotiate hard in their tiny window of opportunity to earn a living out of the game". THAT is what I said.

In which case we can discuss the tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands you've given out of your personal bank account, no strings attached to match exactly what you think the players should be doing. If you've done that we can discuss non-zero credibility levels.
