Kane Elgey -->Manly√

On Elgey, he's a lot more direct and flamboyant than DCE. Exactly the foil DCE needs imo. I'm thinking a Foran (without Foz defense).

Other benefits of Elgey:

1. Played with Kelly through juniors, and the two lit it up (will play his side);
2. Adds some X-Factor to our team;
3. Strengthens our centres;
4. Leaves just 1 hole on the wing to fill
5. Adds speed to the backline (he's quick)

I'm super pumped for this signing. Under rated. Had some bad injury luck. Is a kid (look at Kelly's improvement in defense).
6 back with carty and Ferris

Not the worst signing but lot getting excited about it either. Given our position in both cap and general club running we have to take what we can get.

Maybe a change of club and surroundings can bring out that potential. Also think that when he came through too much was expected of him. Being next to one of the games best halves might teach him a thing or two.

Sometimes just one player in a spine role can mean a change of around 5-6 places in a competition, maybe more if the combination really syncs. With Api and Sirro back and Fainu on the bench and with a number of the young guns a year older, I'm getting quite excited by what Manly may have to offer next year, with or without Barrett as coach. They could be a real surprise packet. 5/8 has been our Achilles Heal this year

Not to sure about this one, I have low expectations and on hindsight we should've upgraded and extended green and we could've avoided all this crap.
My real issue is that the club are currently recruiting a cap/list manager so why risk this signing in before we get the list manager in? That article said he had offers from super league but basically nobody else in the nrl wanted him. Why not wait, get the list manager in and then recruit. Putting the cart before the horse it seems to me.

Two reasons. First the cap issue has blocked us getting high price players and other clubs are beating us to the punch. We could wait to fill positions but by them all the quality players have moved to other clubs. Second if we don't grab what is on offer we may lose that also. Elgey was England bound. We've been crucified for not recruiting and then grabbing basement material (some of which has turned out quite well but a lot has wasted money). If a good one comes along who's cheap (in this case because of injuries that took their toll) then we should grab them.

DCE is an excellent defender, probably one of the best defending halves in the comp. Just look at the number of tackles he makes each week compared to others, including the big names. Yes he could teach Elgey a thing or two about defence.

As for the issue regarding Croker, Cust, Tom W. and Hodko? Croker wont be with us next year, Cust is not in the 30 and is still only 19 so will probably be Blacktown half with Metcalfe next year. Hodko has a year left and will be back up. Only question is Tom W. He has a year left on his contract and must make a position his next year or he'll struggle to remain at Manly. No way Kelly or Walker will go. They will be our centre partnership for a few years to come. And Suli? He'll be with us for a couple of years at least. He's only 19. I see Anderson on the wing some time next year. I see Parker moving to the forwards.

The thing with Elgey is that he is only on a 2 year contract. He'll be in the 30 but if he doesn't perform he'll be in the Reggies for much of that time. My fear is not for Kelly or Elgey. Kelly here to stay. Its Tom W. If he doesn't get some consistent mongrel into that talented body of his he may find himself with another club. Tonnes of potential, but needs to assert himself, take control.

Probable backline next year with back ups in brackets

Tom. T (Anderson).
Tuafua (Anderson, T.Wright)
Walker (Suli, Funa, T. Wright)
Kelly (Suli, Funa, T. Wright)
Suli ( Anderson, T. Wright)
Elgey (T. Wright, Hodko)
DCE (Hodko, Elgey...maybe Cust or Metcalfe)

Can't see why all the doom and gloom merchants are out about this one

He won't be breaking the bank, is certainly not a step backwards on what we currently have in the squad, and most importantly adds to our depth which is very lacking at the moment

I'd still be going with Walker as first choice in the 6, but if he or DCE go down I'd be more confident with Elgey coming in and doing a job

As is standard, the usual "but the Titans didn't want him so he must be ****" brigade will be out, he could just add himself to a long line involving Robertson, Bryant, Hall, Galuvao, Ballin, Lane, Tanginoa etc, the list could go on but you get my point
Why do we need to add to our depth for 5/8? We need a genuine starting 5/8. Hodkinson, Metcalf, Tom Wright and Cade Cust are more than enough depth at 5/8 and are of a similar quality to Elgey - so why take up 250k a year for added depth when it isn't needed? We need a proper 5/8th and move Walker to centre where he is the best in the business.

A quote from Ryan James ,

"It would be handy if we could keep him but if there was a club who wants to pick him up, he'll be outstanding for them.

"He has one of the best kicking games going around. The way he reads a game and leads a team around makes him one of the best young talents I've seen."

James played on the left edge beside Elgey in his outstanding debut season in 2015, after he was the Holden Cup player of the year in 2014.

"I want him here, but you can't have everything," said James. "He's a quality player and maybe a change of scenery might be good for him.

"He's definitely an NRL player and I wouldn't like to see him go overseas yet.

"He can defend. He puts his body in front of them. Halfback is a hard place to defend when you have much bigger men running at you and you're not working from the inside to help a smaller defender."
If Ryan was on the money ("He has one of the best kicking games going around. The way he reads a game and leads a team around makes him one of the best young talents I've seen.") then they wouldn't be letting him go. He is a depth player, the issue is we have similar quality depth players in this position.

I'm intrigued by this Elgey signing and looking forward to how it plays out - I have high hopes. I remember when he first came through, I had wraps on him like everyone else seemed to. Seems like he has had some trouble with injuries and perhaps also is down on confidence and old fashioned luck. We might hopefully have scored a real bargain.

I’m sure you’d be overwhelmed if we bought say Morgan or Munster but I’d like you to explain to me how we could possibly afford another $800-$900k player??

The fact is we can’t , so I’d suggest Elgey is a bit of a “ wing and prayer” type recruitment, cheap ( as the Titans are paying some ) , talented but with some flaws.

A player very very similar to Blake Green who everyone raves about but whose defence is absolute crap!!

I think he’s a fair signing, for the $$.

If it was $900k a yes I’d jump on your bandwagon , but if it’s $200k a year then at least let him have a shot.
Roosters
Tedesco 1 mill
Cronk 1 mill
Cordner 800k
Crichton 800k
Mitchell undisclosed
Radley 650k
Keary 750k
Ask these Karnts how to do it.

Outside of Hodkinson, Elgey is by far more a proper 5/8 than the others mentioned, and it adds quality depth to the top 30. Nobody knows what Tom Wright is yet but I've seen nothing that suggests a proper 5/8, and the other 2 guys are a few seasons away, if they make it at all, and won't be near a top 30 spot next season

I'm guessing Cartwright would have had something to do with him at the Titans so we will know what we are getting

There have been a few signings over the last week, mostly internal re-signings which should be announced soon.

This plus Egley's NRL announced signing plus Api and Sirro's renewal contracts sitting on Greenturd's desk awaiting the witch hunt outcome, it appears the NRL and the club know the outcome of our appeal and haven't released it.
