Interesting that you say he is a 6 and this to me is a big part of the mystery that is Tom Wright.
It seems that he didn’t have a specialist position.
I’m sure when Bozo was around all the talk was they thought he’d make a handy centre but if that was the long term plan they didn’t persist in his education in that position.

I’m not even sure if he knows his best position so 7’s rugby may be exactly where he fits.

For any number of reasons he’s floated between 1, 3, 4 and 6 - sure he can attack but that’s the part that comes naturally. If he’s not a great communicator, defender or team player then what can you do?
....and it seems like the Brumbies aren't entirely sure what to do with him either; maybe inside centre, maybe fly half but he will have to earn one of those positions first.
I think if he does go on to bigger things it will be at the Olympics in a couple of years (or maybe even the NFL?).

Good point . I did assume a little on position. Probably more about where we need him than where he is suited. He had a bit of brad filtler in him with his size, speed and step and freddy started in the centres and moved to 6

Unless we unload kelly or walker i saw no future for him in the centres.

One question.

Would Tom Wright been a better option to have persisted with than fatboi Suli or Parker who frankly are the worst centre/wing pair I have ever seen.

Yet TB persisted with them but refused to take a punt on Wright.

Imo - Wright is better than both these players and so much more potential for any decent coach.

To answer your question ... no ... I don't think Baz coached DCE to a higher level ...... just as I don't believe he coached him to a lower level .....

Sorry WOODSIE but you have to be joking yeah?

When TB took over this side DCE was one of the premier halves in the NRL. GF winner, Churchill medal winner (on a losing side even) and playing really well doing the job he was coached to do. Do you remember the line breaks he used to make on his side of the field?

When TB arrived I remember an article where TB talks about changing DCE's game to a Thurston type of all over the field player. well 3 years later TB pretty well destroyed DCE's game. Look at the incessant kicking for touch on the last tackle this year... that's the coaches game plan...

Sure DCE has made it back to the QLD and AUS sides but that's more luck than outright owed due to the cupboard being so bare.

So no TB didn't make DCE's game better but he sure made it a lot-lot worse. And if you think anything else then you really are kidding yourself...

5 games with mainly minimum time off the Bench coached by an inexperienced incompetent coach does not make or break any young player as far as I am concerned
But hey we all see things differently
Just adding some potential fuel to a fire here, but I did notice on Instagram, while procrastinating at work, that Shaun Lane and Tom Wright were travelling in Bali together. Shaun Lane was about the only one consistently pictured with Jackson Hastings on Instagram, suggesting that they were pretty close. He quit the club at about the same time that Hastings left for the UK, possibly suggesting he was bummed about his mate being p*ssed off. So it is possible...deep breath while drawing long bow... that Tom Wright was also in the same circle, and upset about the treatment of Hastings. And, subsequently, left the club on the first offer that came along.

The end.

Thanks for that insight .... I must be new to this game ..... I had the crazy notion that DCE's game and the role he needed to adopt changed with the abilities of the different 5/8's and the options they provided and that he had to adjust to and play with .....

I also have the even crazier notion that his game style/role will change again this year depending on who is 5/8 and the skills and options they bring to the field ....

You must be new I guess? don't worry its ok... keep up the hard work and it will come to you one day.

Chew on this and please feel free to tell me I'm incorrect.

Look at cronk. How many new 5/8's has he had over the past 10 years? If you can't be arsed checking its been lots and guess what! his game has stayed exactly the same. each of his sidekicks fulfilled a role to complement his natural game...

Thurston the same.

I put DCE in this same company as far as talent and believe that if TB had have complimented his game instead of attempting to change it then things could have been very different.

Of course, there are some that still believe TB did a good job given the circumstances. those people will continue to believe in Unicorns and leprechauns no matter what the facts presented.

Another strange notion I had was that from 2011 - 2015 DCE had the wonderful experience of playing exclusively along side Foran, and had 3 of the best backs ever to play for Manly running off his plays in Snake, Matai and Lyon ... behind a pack that contained 2 of the best running forwards in the game in Gifty and Choc ... and all the while being hand fed the ball by a master in Ballin behind a dominant pack ...

For 5 years DCE didn't have to do too much tinkering with his game .... his role didn't really change much ....

In 2016 he effectively lost all his experienced and gifted team mates and his role and the demands on his game have changed remarkedly .... he is yet to settle with a permanent and consistent 5/8 with good last tackle options and has the youngest and least experienced team in Manly's history .... and yes, I am silly enough to think that his game has needed to go through some adjustment ....

But, I bow to your greater wisdom ..... it must be all Barrett's fault ...

PSS Melbourne have had 75% of their spine in Smith, Cronk and Slater for 14 consecutive years ..... fitting in one player to compliment at 5/8 (such as Geyer, Green, Munster, Widdop etc) would have far less affect on Cronks game.

Yet when cronk goes to a completely new team he continues with HIS style and what happens???

Barrett really hasn't helped the situation at Manly has he? Continually playing substandard players because they were apparently solid while putting exciting juniors out to pasture. The guy had no clue which is why we are in this mess. He wasn't hard done by, he wasn't mistreated he was just out of his depth.

Yep, Cronk really battled with that team of no names .....

Think that there was a definite problem at different stages last season and this season , with the manner in which Baz implemented his assessment that D C E was a unique type instinctive player into giving him a predominately roving or attacking wide of the ruck role . Dally always has had an issue sometimes with consistent or effective game involvement or management so this playing mode hardly suited his or the team "s best playing prospects . No doubt needs a reasonably functioning 5 / 8 to complement his playing strengths and will also be important how any new coaching approach can ideally enhance his special type talents and enable him to be really on his game more consistently .

Tom Turbo - Australian Rep
Dylan Walker - Australian Rep - Gf winner
Jake Turbo - Australian Rep
Uate - Former Aus Rep
Tafua - Tonga Rep
Tapau - NZ Rep
AFB - NZ rep
Green - GF winner Melbourne
Api - Former GF winner

A team of no names as well I suppose.

Anyway, I'm getting bored by this now so i will let you have the last say.
