Remember the famous eels signing of will and their coaching job to hoppa? We are doing the same. It's all about hoppas kids. Call his bluff. It is not worth having him here just because his kids might have the goods. F*** him off, the dope.

I've had that exact feeling. That its more about keeping his talented kids at the club more than anything.

Management need to wake up. It's about the good of the club community as opposed to the interests of an individual who has behaved innapropriately on more than one occasion in the past. If he's been given that job to keep his kids at the club those responsible for making that decision should be ashamed.

To the Penns it may be about the pragmatics of the situation rather than the morality. Do the costs outweigh the benefits? Obviously Hoppa has very talented kids coming through so that will be a consideration. And with a huge family to provide for Hoppa needs an income.

I've no doubt that Manly's motive in promoting Hopoate to SG Ball coach concerns in some way the three Hopoate kids coming through the junior ranks, Jamil. Bonny and Albert. Similarly the NRL's motives in seeking to ban Hoppa from coaching has a lot to do with public perception. But that leave us to question to reason for the NSWRL's willingness to support his application to coach. They dont seem to have such an ulterior motive other than their apparent dispassionate decision based on an assessment which would have considered the various factors involving Hoppa and his coaching credentials and his overall public behaviour. For reasons of which we are not privy they have after doing their investigation determined him suitable.

Its important to remember Hopoate has been coaching junior teams for around 4-5 years. He coached a Manly development squad last year. He co-coached the Tongan side, which is overseen by general international Rugby League rules. The only negative issue in his coaching background was the incident with his Manly Cove side in 2012. That incident involved spectator violence, not Hopoate's actions, but led to Manly Cove's temporary suspension. But Hopoate has a Level 2 coaching accreditation and has passed in the NSWRL's assessment a 'valid working with children check'. I do note though that the police are now involved and expressing concern, and as I indicated as we are not privy to all of John's misdemeanors it may be warranted to withdraw him from the post.

Now I dont know Hopoate personally, and maybe in the end he isnt the suitable person to be coaching the SG Ball team. However its important to get things in perspective and not be carried away by a media witch hunt, and examine the matter dispassionately. If its is then judged he is unsuitable, then so be it. And remember there have been a few coaches who have had questionable pasts, one of course a media personality who coached a prominent side in the early 90s following certain defamation convictions and a certain alleged incident overseas which though dismissed, implied certain deemed unacceptable behaviour

The reason I'm suggesting stepping back a little, is because what over the years I've noticed, and I'm sure most have noticed, is that people tend to compartmentalise aspect of their personality. What I mean is just because they are aberrant in certain elements of their behaviour, doesnt necessarily mean it follows throughout their behaviour.

I've known men who are violent with other men, but are devoted and very patient with children and/or animals. Then there are others who are pillars of society, generous, caring of others, who are monsters in the home, assaulting their wives, abusing their kids. For example a significant proportion of the pedophiles I've had to deal with, are in public amenable, often popular. A good example as Rex suggested, are priests, most no doubt honourable men, but even those committing such heinous offences against children, are probably otherwise well regarded and have fine pastoral skills.

That's why police have lists of criminals based on modus operanti, that is the nature of their offending. They're not going to look for a bank robber among white collar criminals. Many people I've known with criminal backgrounds and gaol time, are caring with their family (though their crime no doubt impacts negatively on the family, but that's not their intent).

All I'm trying to suggest is that Hopoate's stupidity and violence, does not therefore necessarily suggest he is negative with children. He may be, but we should be basing that on his actions with children in the past, not a brawl at the cross or an incident in a football match 15 years ago..

Very good points. I guess another factor is we don't know the motivations and the substance behind what the cop is alleging. It is conceivable he could have personal moral views distorting his judgements.

The cops in Ballarat, for instance, reportedly advised in the context of the Ballarat Catholic Church pedophilia allegations, that no priests in Victoria would be charged with anything short of a murder. So the pedophiles in the church reportedly knew they had free rein (not just within the church but within the police) to do as they please.

Defy us over John Hopoate and risk competition points, NRL warn Manly Sea Eagles
The NRL is threatening Manly with fines and the stripping of competition points if the club does not comply with an edict to stand down John Hopoate as coach of its SG Ball team.

The governing body prepared a breach notice outlining a fine of $30,000, plus an additional $10,000 penalty for every week Hopoate mentors the under-18s team. The sanction was discussed during crisis talks between the NRL and the club on Friday, but the breach notice was not served after Manly powerbrokers agreed to stand Hopoate down.

Fairfax Media has been told the NRL's integrity unit boss Nick Weeks also threatened to strip the club of premiership points if Manly was to remain obstinate during talks also involving the NRL's head of football,Todd Greenberg, Manly chief executive Joe Kelly and club chairman Scott Penn.

"We have advice ... that we cannot ignore when making this determination," a NRL spokesman said.

NRL and Manly officials also met several weeks ago with Wayne Walpole, a detective inspector from the NSW Police. Walpole expressed his concerns about Hopoate, who has been banned from The Star casino, mentoring teenagers.

"I pointed out that the commissioner of police had excluded Hopoate from the casino in July and that's a decision not taken lightly. The holdings we have to make that decision are confidential," Walpole told Fairfax Media on Friday.

"There is open-sourced information about his links to organised crime figures and I thought Manly needed to take that into account."

However, Sea Eagles powerbrokers are concerned that Walpole, citing confidentiality issues, could not provide specifics to back up his claims. The situation could have come to a flashpoint over the weekend, but Manly's SG Ball team had the bye. All eyes will be on next Saturday's clash with Canberra at Brookvale Oval to see if Hopoate makes an appearance.

The threat of losing competition points - one of several sanctions at the NRL's disposal - is the same one hanging over arch rivals Parramatta. The Eels will go into the season two wins behind their rivals if they do not comply with corporate governance reforms set out by the NRL following salary cap breaches in 2014. Should Hopoate report for duty, and head office follows through with their threats to both clubs, it will have major consequences for the integrity of the competition.

While the NRL believes Hopoate is not a "fit and proper person" for registration, they may still be powerless to stop him from taking up the clipboard. Manly have sought the counsel of legal eagles Julieanne Levick and Tim Unsworth and it is understood their advice suggests the NRL has no jurisdiction over the NSWRL-run competition. Whether the Sea Eagles are prepared to challenge the NRL over the matter remains to be seen.

Hopoate is set to be forced out of another footy gig in coming days. The former NSW and Australian winger has been a part of the Tongan national team's coaching staff but is likely to be forced to stood down.

"The NRL will require Tonga to ensure its coaching staff are registered with the NRL," the NRL spokesman said.

Tongan coach Kristian Woolf was unaware of the drama surrounding Hopoate when contacted on Saturday.

"All I can say is that anything he has done for Tonga has been outstanding," Woolf said.

"His integrity, in terms of why he is there, I can't fault him one bit. That's all I can judge him on.

"I'd like to have him involved again, but in saying that we're governed by the NRL and I haven't heard from them as yet. Whether he is allowed to be involved, I'd have to discuss with them.

"He gives a lot of time and effort, he's got a lot of passion for Tongan rugby league and been very good for us."

Hopoate has been a controversial figure during and after his NRL career. He served a record 45 weeks of suspension during his career, including a 12-match stint on the sidelines for inserting his finger up the anuses of North Queensland players.

wow.

without leaning pro or con hopoate style...

this seems like a gross infraction on Manly's rights.

How the nrl think they can fine a club 30k, plus 10k a week, plus unspecified competition points for a coach who is coaching in the nswrl just simply can't be legal....can it?

Not even adding to call made by another poster (ser08 ?) listing the ex felons/crims who are actually playing in the nrl...and not the nswrl.

Stumped if I know how they can threaten this.

I'd like to see Hoppa really stick it up them. He could self immolate like those Buddhist monks did in Saigon. The NRL needs to reform, the balls in his court now.

NRL have a 1.8b brand to protect and actually care to do so, unlike Manly

Manly, for unknown reasons, does not abide by their Fans nor NRL wishes

Hoppa is a reppeat offender, and is mentoring teenagers, unlike the other criminals in the NRL Player ranks :wondering:

Dumb move to piss of the NRL for any reason, let alone Hoppa :banghead:

Hoppa may have some talented kids in his family that are playing in our juniors, and he may be good mates with Bozo, but I think its about time the club let him go quite frankly. More trouble than its worth.

Out of curiosity, which team will get hit with a loss of points? The SG Ball side, U/20's, NSW Cup or NRL.....or all 4? TBH I wouldn't put it past Greenturd to threaten the NRL team with a loss of competition points for something that is happening in a junior competition over which the NRL apparently has no jurisdiction.

Could Manly appoint some Joe as the figurehead "official" - and have Hoppa as a non-official ringin who does exactly what he does now?
