Hopoate is a disgrace of a man and should be know where near the club let alone young players. For god sake it cant be too hard to get a decent coach.

He is a decent coach. Just not too decent in other areas of his life at times. Actually his past behaviour has been more in the 'foolish' range than the serious criminal range. Mind you everyone has different aspects in their personality, some negative, some positive. We know of John's negative aspects, its been splashed across the media infinitum, but that doesnt include a negative attitude towards children. At that level his behaviour is reportedly positive. Some people need to focus on where they do good, in order to avoid those areas where they do bad.

he belted an opposition coach at an U10's Footy match and abused officials at another game...just to name a few.
stick your finger up someone's @rse today on the train or bus and see what happens. Foolish or criminal.
Check out the rest of the sh1t he has done to others, the list rolls on and on.

The guy is a grub and has no part in Manly.

Looks like Hoppa's days may be numbered.

NRL: Top cop tells Manly to ban John Hopoate from coaching children

John Hopoate is set to be stood down as coach of Manly's under-18s team after a senior police officer reached out to the club to convince the Sea Eagles that the former Test winger was unfit to mentor teenagers.

Fairfax Media has learnt that the NRL and Sea Eagles officials met a detective inspector from the organised crime unit, Wayne Walpole, about three weeks ago where Walpole expressed his deep concern about Hopoate's involvement with a junior rugby league team.

Manly majority owner Scott Penn and chief executive Joe Kelly held further talks on Friday with NRL integrity unit chief Nick Weeks. Walpole told Fairfax Media it was his belief that Hopoate should not oversee the development of young players.

"I just advised [Manly] that I thought there was open-sourced material in relation to the selection of Hopoate as coach," Walpole said. "I pointed out that the commissioner of police had excluded Hopoate from the casino in July and that's a decision not taken lightly. The holdings we have to make that decision are confidential.

"There is open-sourced information about his links to organised crime figures and I thought Manly needed to take that into account. I just advised the NRL that they needed to have a look at the open-sourced material available for Hopoate [regarding his] position [as coach]. Our squad is there to protect the integrity of casino operations. The same squad can't sit by and not give advice to the NRL when the same person is appointed [to a coaching role]."

Sea Eagles officials were unable to confirm if Hopoate was still the coach of the club when contacted by Fairfax Media on Friday. The NRL has also threatened Manly with a breach notice over Hopoate's involvement. It is understood they will receive it should they fail to stand him down. The NSW Rugby League has supported Manly's desire to install Hopoate as coach. Manly's under-18s team has the bye this weekend which allows the Sea Eagles a chance to delay any decision and escape further punishment by the NRL.

Hopoate oversaw the side's first game which resulted in a 42-18 loss to Newcastle last Saturday at Brookvale Oval. Hopoate played briefly for NSW and Australia during his 209-game first-grade career. He spent the bulk of his career at the Sea Eagles but also had stints at the Wests Tigers and Manly's failed Northern Eagles joint venture with North Sydney. Hopoate served a total of 45 weeks in suspensions on the sidelines — an NRL record.

Meanwhile, Manly are expecting centre-turned-playmaker Dylan Walker to experience some teething problems in the No.6 jersey but are willing to invest time as they groom him as their long-term five-eighth.

"He's been impressive," coach Trent Barrett said. "I did watch him a fair bit through the juniors as a five-eighth and I did think that was his position. He looks comfortable there. There will be some teething problems. We've had a fair bit to do with his kicking and his organisation. He's coming along really well."

The trial against Queensland Cup champions Ipswich will give Walker his only game alongside halves partner Daly Cherry-Evans before their season opener against Canterbury on March 4.

Walker was released from his South Sydney contract following the prescription drug scandal, allowing the Sea Eagles to swoop and pick him up a year earlier than expected.

Barrett had been in talks with Walker to come over for the 2017 season but was delighted to get him on the books a year early. "We were just lucky that we got him a year earlier than we thought," Barrett said.

Now links to organised crime figures?

I'm surprised Penn doesn't say enough is enough and pull the plug.

Do our sponsors really want to be associated with this? And now we're trying to sell naming rights. Not helpful purely from a business perspective you'd think.

Maybe if the working with children authority was revisited, it'd be rejected with this new info. Then there'd be no dispute between the parties.

I would imagine there's heaps of league people who could be linked with organised crime makes the game what it is , this should have been dealt with before the season started, wonder if this has anything to do with that horrible incident in sg ball trial v newcastle and a journalist has got wiff of it.

Links to organised crime makes the game what it is? Are you meaning corrupt?

The awful incident, as reported here, certainly doesn't seem a good reflection on the players or coaches. Everyone gets smeared. If it was coached, then it should be bye bye Hoppa. We don't need that.

Great to see such a civic minded crime squad detective - Wayne Walpole: "Our squad is there to protect the integrity of casino operations". Good luck with that, Wayne.

Has anyone seen any of this "open-sourced information" about his alleged links to organised crime figures? Maybe I'm not using Google right, I couldn't find any.

John hasn't been thriving financially of late, maybe one of the crime bosses can lend him a lawyer for a defamation case

Wasnt the owners of the club he was bouncing at (when he allegedly belted some patron) associated with organised crime?

So... is the NSW govt devoting an entire squad of senior police at taxpayer expense to ensure casino owners only make their mega profits legally? Sounds fair.
Let's see, there must be more than one way to define 'corruption'.

Drugs , crime , alcohol related incidents ,wife beaters, it's got it all . The game thrives on drama or you can always watch cricket

Its a soap opera alright.

And being tied to organised crime is a significant step up on your standard drugs, crime, alcohol incidents, wife beaters, etc.

Really, though, the biggest corruption problem we face is with our politicians. On current rules you can donate $111,000, by entirely legitimised money laundering, to a political party without it being identified back to you. The max in the USA is something like $250 over 4 years. With that level of unreported greasing of decision-makers palms, we have no hope at all of ensuring key decisions are not corrupt.

You may know more than I about such issues but if your comment referring to an U10 footy match was to do with the all out brawl in a Manly Cove match, allegations against Hoppa were withdrawn and it was reportedly just assumed that he had been involved because he was there. I'm not saying Hoppa is a saint...far from it...but if any incident occurs with him around he tends to be immediately implicated. He has been convicted of just two offences, both resulting in fines and/or a bond. One offence was assault (2010) and the other intimidation of a parking meter officer (2013).

Hopoate is a hot head no doubt and has been abusive to many in heated situations. But suggestions of assaults other than the Kings Cross incident, seem to have been quite exaggerated. I remember when he played for Manly. He niggled opposition players, referees, linesmen, ballboys. The incident involving the finger poking 'tainted' him from that point and he became newsworthy (has he ever be charged or reported doing it anywhere else on or off the field? That incident happened in 2001, 15 years ago). But there have been players in the League who have done far worse on and off the field, and have been forgiven by the League.

The point is that one element of the League and the Manly Club have found him suitable to coach the S.G.Ball. I would suggest that they would not risk such action, if they thought Hoppa was a danger to the kids. Do you think you are a better judge than they are? The other element of the league are obviously responding to public opinion regarding past indiscretions, not to his suitability to coach.

There was a time when I trusted that people in authority would not endanger kids.

Now I don't accept ever that argument.

The responses of the churches in particular - the supposed moral guardians - to pedaphiles has shattered any such illusions. Their actions - even now - in requiring secrecy agreements to be signed to obtain compensation and in vigorously fighting legitimate claims in court - is beyond reprehensible - and only further victimises the victims.

Remember the famous eels signing of will and their coaching job to hoppa? We are doing the same. It's all about hoppas kids. Call his bluff. It is not worth having him here just because his kids might have the goods. F*** him off, the dope.
