Jamie Humphreys

One thing is we have heard less about the club when they enter talks with existing players (compared to the past) and all we see is the members email.

Who knows what discussions were had, even if they were informal and what was available here and what the club planned for him.

I think we will have DCE still for a at least 3 more years which, with the signing of Simpkins would have shown him an unclear path to first grade

Which coincides strangely with the moving on of members of a particular family...

Although I believe Des was/is particularly close with certain footy "journalists" and I am convinced that he was briefing them (most notably with regards to jersey gate and the ensuing fallout)...

Re Walsh it is bloody hard to find a lot of detail on his league career. I could only find a few appearances off the bench for the Roosters HM side and then it appears he did his knee (I think Smokin Joe referenced this in another post). However given his junior pedigree then benefit of the doubt for now and I hope he turns out to be our FG 1/2 of 5/8 for 10+ years (and plays SOO and test footy).

Re Bunting. He is still only 19 and did come with wraps from the Panthers junior system. He has only just started playing ressies (vs men) so it may take a while to transition. Jury out for now but he has shown promise in SG Ball and JF and he is 3 years younger than Humprey.

However I agree it is a shame that Humphrey's has moved on and I would prefer him to Arthur and GCKT if I am being honest. Easily worthy of a Top 30 spot on our roster and a good backup to DCE or Brooksy.

Lawton also is shaping up as a bigger loss than I first thought. I would have him in our top 13 as a starting second rower with Burbo on the bench (and both Lawton/Burbo > Waddell). I think he will be a very good but for the Cowboys if he stays injury free.

Also on Walsh, and I'll admit I've not seen him play.

But do you really think a club signs a 18 year old 3 year deal as PR spin because they have had a 22 year old yet to play first grade sign elsewhere?

Or is it more reasonable to suggest an 18 year old who has made junior Blues development squads and was captain over the under 18s Wallabies may be seen as a exciting talent by the club?

Article and timing of the article aside.....a three year deal is not done to in some sort of attempt to appease fans.

I absolutely believe the club bumbles, fumbles, spins, withholds, inserts PR when it comes to players / coaches. You'd be surprised how dirty the player market for us is. They've been dropping so many balls, we could create a child's play ballpit.

The fact that you promoted Jason Ferris versus Humphreys says a lot though. You've been hard on Jamie's butt from day one talking about how average he is, so I'm taking that into consideration.

Anyways, from the ears and eyes of someone who witnessed and watched Walsh, he isn't surprised he left the entire code when no other suitors made way for him.

We screwed up Disco. That's why it's all over social media and online. People are pissed off. Same as Schuster. Same as Lodge. Same as S Fainu. It just goes on.

Seriously, we have to hope and pray DCE goes another 4-5 years now. Close to 40. Or we are royally screwed.

Yeah I have always rated Lawnton... when he is on the field...

I may be wrong but he seems to have been injurex more often than not since moving to the northern beaches so I can live with his departure... he has certainly set himself a challenge as the Cows have a top notch hooker and some bloody good 2nd row options...

The year after DCE retires (probably 2030 at this rate) it's going to be an absolute free-for-all for that No.7 jersey. I wouldn't expect anything spectacular out of us that season, and I suspect we'd be losing Jake, Tom and DCE all around the same time then. Likely going to be similar to the Dogs choosing between Hutchinson and Sexton earlier this season.

Compared to many other clubs, with a little under a million in cap space, 4 highly touted halves, understudying arguably the best halfback in the NRL, we will be well off finding a new halfback.

So for those using "opportunities" as the excuse for a ****ed up (again) recruitment and retention balls up, I'm sorry, you're wrong in my opinion.
You realise you're not Jamie and have no knowledge of what he considers an 'opportunity' to be?

It's pretty black and white.

Stay at Manly behind DCE and Brooks for what could potentially be three years and play a position that you've essentially failed to transition into?

or...

Go to Souths and play under arguably the greatest coach of all time, knowing that your one obstacle to a starting role in your preferred position is an untried and untested Pommy with 0 NRL experience to his name.

I'd love to know what Jamie thinks of those scenarios...judging by his recent signing at Souths, I reckon I already have the answer.

The way you carry on you’d think Jamie had the best debut of all time… he did exactly what he was supposed to do against a pathetic Newcastle team (& done it well) feed the ball to Turbo & Brooks to let them dominate. Only took 3 kicks all game, had a few missed tackles, poor decision to run it from half way on last tackle & almost blew Olakuatu’s try from a bad pass to a wide open Turbo. But overall it was a good debut & he should be happy with it.

I think what people on here find weird is how you sh*t on the junior/young half’s we have but have an obsession with Humphreys? Walsh is 17-18 years old hasn’t even played a game for the club & you label him Ferris? Seems like you personally know Humphreys & have an obvious bias toward him or you think he’s the next Cleary & we all know that isn’t true.

Regardless, if if none of the juniors work out it’s a good thing the club will have $700-$800k to sign another half after DCE retires right? Maybe we’ll go & sign one the best junior half’s in the comp like Phins did with Katoa or Raiders are doing with Sanders - Galvin should be #1 on the list as he comes off contract after 2026 season which will most likely be Chez last.

We will see how it plays out.

I'm not anti Humphreys, he's a good young player, just not convinced he becomes a first grader of consequence.

Some young players you just know, I was certain on Jake, Tom, Brett, DCE, Will, Haumole, Gutho.

Was also certain much talked about lower graders like Anderson or Toby wouldnt make it.

But I'm no super scout, I was also certain on Schuster, Manase, Groom, Tuitavake, Knight and Feledy.

So in the scheme of things my opinion means diddly squat on whether he kicks on or not.

But I don't think we need to trash young players in comparision nor discredit players who have played over 100 NRL games.

Agree, that's perplexing. All anyone really knows about him is a press photo and a club statement. We know nothing to be labelling him a failure before he's even stepped foot in the joint. Sure, I am skeptical but don't know enough to say he can't make it.

I could be wrong but I vaguely recall Ryan mentioning something about a step brother akin to Smoking Joe (i.e. watches the lower grades closely), who said Walsh is not up to it. However, Nicho Hynes was considered 'not up to it' at 24 years old so anyone prepared to write off an 18 year old prospect is probably clueless. It's also interesting that we've got paid staff that think Walsh might have something to offer...seems we should sack them and hire Ryan's step brother, who has more idea.

No offence to anyone on here but a lot better scouts/judges then any of us thought he was talented enough to be the under 18’s Aus Flyhalf captain in Union & in the NSW U 18’s pathways camp in Rugby League.

I also don’t know where this narrative has come from suggesting Walsh was ‘unwanted’ by everyone else & that we’ve signed some reject. This is from a article posted today

‘The Dolphins went hard for the 18-year-old, secretly flying him to Brisbane and bringing him into the dressing-room to meet coach Wayne Bennett and senior players following a recent home game. The Roosters were also in the mix after giving Walsh his start in junior reps, but the opportunity to stay and play on the northern beaches was too hard to pass up.’

Here’s the link if anyone wants to read the entire thing

Thanks for sharing good read.

So we beat out Dolphins, Roosters and the ARU it seems.

A local boy to boot too.

I assume he'll start in Flegg so will be interesting to see how he goes.

My question is, if he has been training with us as has been reported why could he not be registered and play Flegg now?

Yea I wasn’t too sure about the NRL teams but know for a fact that a lot of Rugby fans were really disappointed that he signed for us as they seen him as a future wallaby. Not that it means his game translates to being an Australian rugby league player but nice to know he is a very talented half

& for that last question I’ve got no idea mate, maybe Smoking Joe would have the answer?

I remember in 2010 we had a promising young half come into 1st grade. Played quite well. The following year we let him go because the club was banking on another young half playing Q Cup, that nobody had heard of, would be even better. Seems to have worked out ok so far.

agree as a mobile 2nd row he has excelled the last 2 weeks .

My Step Brother knows the Chooks lower grades VERY intimately. Think a Chooks version of @Smokin Joe (possibly even more obsessed). I'll take his word on Joey Walsh.

For the record, I also add very little value to the quality of Rugby Union players. Consider this - Tom Wright is one of their best players. Remember him? Couldn't crack first grade here basically. Their top line internationals are dumping them to have a shot with the Titans and Chooks (who knows if they'll even make their top 17).

I saw this signing as nothing but PR spin, made to deflect the ineptitude of our recruitment and retention. That's my take - it may be very right, or very wrong, but it's mine.

If Walsh is our succession plan (or Bunting), I honestly hope DCE plays until he's 50. They won't be in Humphrey's shadow. Dumb, DUMB recruiting. And I was calling for his re-signing a year ago.
Mate you were saying similar things about Brown and Talau at the beginning of the season. At some point you have to leave some room for the idea that people at the club know more about what's going on than we do.

Thank you sounds promising. Anyone know what sort of contract he is on? The fact that he is a real local junior is exciting.
