Maybe the real point is, as pointed out by @mickqld in another thread - we have no succession plan for our 35 year old halfback. It was to be Latu Fainu (I presume), obviously not Jamie Humphreys. Certainly not Luke Brooks to run the team.

We will have around $800k free tho which is promising, maybe throw a good deal at the next big thing coming through when he retires? Has worked great for Dolphins with young Katoa looking like a future rep player but obviously has a lot of risk

Smokin Jo had some information on junior halves coming through but I think we have at least 2 more years with Chez he is playing his best footy and has no injury concerns

A quick google search has a preseason article on him where it was all based around him moving to hooker, midway through last year and preseason this year.

Another search on the NSWRL website lists the games from this year, so far he has been named as
4 x Hooker
4 x interchange bench
6 x Five Eighth
1 x Halfback
I'm no NSW Cup aficionado so there may have been a switch on gameday that changes those numbers and others may argue that there is bugger all difference between 6 & 7 but only one game at 7 (in which they lost to second last) may be an indicator.

So is he seen as a genuine halfback that can run the team? It would assume maybe not
Is he progressing enough as a hooker? Maybe, maybe not
Is he a running five eighth? Maybe
Was he ready to run a Origin and injury hit NRL side that was backing up from an energy sapping win the previous week? Only the coaching staff know that and it would appear not.

Is his future as a specialist #14?

He's only 21.
Line that up with DCE at the same age,
He had two seasons of Toyota Cup ( 2009 team of the year ), a full season of QLD Cup - he was captain, named Player and Rookie of the year, QLD residents as captain.
NRL debut at 21 but in a side that went on to win the GF.
He's on record as saying he thought he was ready for first grade in 2010 but Des said no and held him back.

Would debuting the other night have been any good for his development?
Two other debutantes, Hoppa's only played a handful.

Agree on all this though he is actually 22.

Personally I would have picked him too , however the football department decided otherwise.

I happen to think that they have a greater handle on things than the experts on here so I’ll just take what they decide and choose not to question it.

May have missed a couple of my earlier posts , well observations when there was some pre game discussion of using players quite unfamiliar with an N R L 6 role.
Just made the example of Des using Fanu as a 6 that resulted in a very underwhelming role 3 years ago in another quite important points wise club game and definitely at least some caution trying another untested 6 against the Bunnies .
Not that Siebs or the coaching - selector staff regularly peruse this forum but a bit concerned that this aspect may not have received the due attention .
Then a post game suggestion that by not having Humphries at least on the bench [ if not starting ] and if the Brooks - Talau combo was not going too well and certainly in attack , did markedly reduce the option of some better variation or effective attack .
Not a case of some posters i am sure not trying to assume some expert opinion , just some not unreasonable assessment of how the side may be able to maximize their chances of getting a result
Would like to think otherwise but footy departments or selectors definitely do not always get it right unfortunately

I'd argue that is hyperbole.

Olakau'atu for one made his Orgin debut this year.

Saab and Paseka had career best form last two years.

Talua back really improved off the scrap heap, Brown as well to a lesser extent.

DCE in probably his best form since about 14.

If we are talking career there have been a few debut on the rep scene under his watch.

disagree mate, look where we are sitting on the table, DCE, Ola, brown, paseka will excel for other reasons and would under any coach as i feel these players have heart and talent

But given his job security he is a coach in an excellent position to give young guys a red hot crack.

Worth noting, I believe at present neither of GCKT and Humphreys are contacted beyond end of 2024. Suggests the club isn't too fussed by the prospect of either or both taking up other opportunities.

The coach didn't get the extension he wanted either.

I am comparing him to Spoonbold and why Humphreys may leave vs staying.

Having a coach that can actually coach individuals would help him a lot.

Pint-sized No.9 Gordon Chan Kum Tong has fallen down the pecking order of hookers at Manly since Jake Simpkin arrived but he sent coach Anthony Seibold a strong reminder of what he can do.

Chan Kum Tong, who has dropped back to feeder side Blacktown Workers after a month in NRL, ran amok in the Sea Eagles’ 42-20 win over the Rabbitohs. He scored two tries, got a linebreak, a linebreak assist, five tackle busts and ran 142 metres. The 22-year-old also made 25 tackles with no misses.

Also starring for the Sea Eagles was the versatile Jamie Humphreys. The 22-year-old was developed as a half but was transitioning to hooker this season until injuries struck. He’s since spent the last six weeks in the halves and looks right at home.

Humphreys scored 18 points with a try and six conversions from seven attempts, while also setting up two tries, getting a linebreak, making over 100 metres and 20 tackles — three misses.

He was included in the NRL extended squad last week with Daly Cherry-Evans on Origin duties but Seibold opted to play Karl Lawton in the halves instead. There’s rumours doing the rounds suggesting he’s joining a rival club next season.
