Next Manly coach between John Cartwright and former Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire

SOUTH Sydney premiership-winning coach Michael Maguire has drawn alongside John Cartwright as equal favourite for the vacant Manly coaching position.

The Daily Telegraph understands Maguire and Cartwright are the only two genuine contenders although former Canberra, North Queensland and Gold Coast coach Neil Henry continues to be mentioned.

Cartwright has been favoured for the top job over the past six weeks but Maguire has some influential support from within the club.

There was a suggestion Manly had made Maguire an offer but this couldn’t be substantiated.

Manly co-owner and chairman Scott Penn is overseas while Maguire was not returning calls on Wednesday.

Sea Eagles management has a strong regard for Maguire but also rate Cartwright highly.

Cartwright has experienced success at every club he has coached while Maguire etched his name into South Sydney folklore by guiding the 2014 side to a famous grand final win.

Current coach Trent Barrett has resigned and is locked in a battle with the club over a payout. Barrett is still technically Manly coach until July next season.

Manly and Barrett may be headed to the courts unless the two parties can resolve the festering issue.


And unless the stand-off can be settled within the next six weeks, there is every chance Barrett will return to the club’s Narrabeen headquarters when Manly resume off-season training in early November.

Essentially, Barrett is claiming breach of contract — and so is Manly. Barrett resigned from his post in July.

Most of Manly’s football department staff have re-signed until after the 2020 season.

The fact Mag won't hose down the rumour suggests that it well may be on the cards. That would be a major coup for the club having a hard nosed coach here. Something we desperately need. We have the talent, we just need a REAL coach.

Basically the only person displaced (by their own choice) would be Trent Barrett. The Penn's continue to pay Cartwright and Randall the same (no additional cost).

The club were hiring additional staff anyway.

As blokes they may be good people, but given that we lose roughly 3 out of every 5 games with them in charge.....I seriously don't get it.

You're in it to win premierships and you're never going to do that only winning 40% of the time.

The players voting for Cartwright is like turkeys voting for thanksgiving !
Bring on Madge Des or Tooves only one of those 3 have the skill set needed to get the most out of the roster on and off the field

John Lang and Martin Lang worked (imo) because Martin was a prop who did one thing .... run straight. A lot harder coaching a son that is running the team I would think.

Apparently Ivan and Nathan offered a 10 million contract for 3 years ( by the Riff), wow, big money for a 20 year old and a coach with a win ratio of less than 50%!!

Sounds like a salary cap grey area, especially if Ivan’s contract is huge. He would be a middle ranked coach in my view. Decent but not worth Bellamy money.
