NRL Grand Final 2021: How 2019 sex tape scandal steeled Panthers

Peter Badel

The pain and embarrassment of the Penrith Panthers sex tape scandal was a seminal moment in the club’s history.

Penrith supremo Brian Fletcher has blasted suggestions Penrith Panthers players are arrogant, saying the sex tape scandal of 2019 was a seminal moment in fixing the club’s culture.
The Panthers have come under fire this season for their tryscoring antics with five-eighth Jarome Luai, in particular, attracting criticism for his exuberant celebrations leaping in the air in front of his opponents.

But in the lead-up to Sunday’s shot at grand-final redemption against Souths, Fletcher launched a passionate defence of Penrith’s players. He claims much of the squad’s humility stems from the pain and embarrassment of the sex-tape saga which put the club’s attitude under the microscope.
“It was a bumpy start to Ivan Cleary’s return (as coach), we had the sex tape scandal and that wasn’t an ideal start, but I knew we could overcome that,” Fletcher said.

“It was a hard time but it was a wake-up call for the whole club.
“I had to address the playing group and we had the NRL integrity department come here and speak to them all and interview the players in question. They all put their hand up.

“From that day on, we went about a process of rebuilding and making sure that sort of culture was out of the place.

“Some players suffered the consequences and have learnt from it.

“People had to understand we had a lot of young guys in the group, so I knew what we had to do. We had to fix up the culture of the place. It wasn’t exactly right inside the place so we had to get the right people working for us.
“They are only young men, and young men do make mistakes. No one is perfect, but I’m proud of our culture today and how we have turned things around. We have a very stable board and there are no factions.”

Fletcher says the likes of Luai, Brian To’o, Stephen Crichton and Nathan Cleary are inspirational role models for the Penrith community. He scoffs at suggestions the group are cocky big-heads.

....the sex tapes were a seminal (LOL) moment apparently and they're not cocky big heads just big cock heads.

Did someone say Steel Panther?!?!

The master coach is chasing history with South Sydney Rabbitohs in their decider against Penrith Panthers, to become the first to coach four different NRL teams to a premiership.

LaLa land

A very apt description.

Queensland has been appalling for a long time , Palachook and her attack dog sidekick Miles have been more interested in scoring political points and bringing down Scomo than anything else.

The fact that we are so far behind in the vaccine take up is testament to that.

All of the Premiers are political animals and the power through this has gone to their heads.

I have wondered for some time if the federal government stopped their support payments how quickly things might change.

By the way they are all guilty , it’s a *ing madhouse at present with no one really working together ti get us out of this *.
Mate, that is nearly word for word my brother in law hammered me with today (they came up from S.A Monday for a week. Things have turned very quickly on them as far as quarantine ). But as the BIL is not a footy fan, he didn’t see my argument that if we can just get the GF played, I don’t care what sanctions happen after that. He wasn’t happy, so I went down to the BWS and bought him a cpl bottles of red. That seemed to calm him down after a while.😀😱

Oh just wait till NSW and Vic reopen and we're still stuck in North Korea up here. The political fallout will be Chernobyl magnitude and Kim Jong Palachook will be in meltdown. This place survives on tourism and she is killing it while dragging her feet on it all.

I agree , her feet dragging has held QLD back we are miles behind the big states to the south.

If we go into lockdown and it gets away it’ll be March before we see daylight again.

Few rumours on my QLD news feed on Twitter that we might be back to 50% capacity tomorrow.

All conjecture of course.

So 30 people at home, 100 at a wedding and 39375 at Suncorp. What a fuking joke. They're deadset kidding those 2. Desperate attempt to hold onto her political arse and to hell with the consequences. It really is LaLa land in Australian politics.
I guess our wedding will have to be at suncorp then?

I did read the other day, that the three weeks around Xmas garners around 118 million a day! on the GC in tourism. I can sympathise with all those people, but I just want the GF on Sunday, then Anastasia can communise the joint.

Won’t it be hypocritical if the lock down orders are announced 10 am Monday.

That mad bitch the CHO, anything’s possible with her.

If there’s north of 10 cases tomorrow the GF will be on its knees or heading to Townsville.
Their even talking about postponing the game, that would be disasterous for everyone. Her popularity will be diminished considerably if she pulls the pin on Suncorp and Townsville. The amount of people who follow league in this State is huge, she needs to be reminded of this, maybe that dip stick Myles character who's a big league fan can have some choice words with palaczahe...

Miles ( the attack dog ), absolute dip stick!!

How he’s deputy premier is beyond me , he’s got the IQ of a cane toad.
