'ex' Barrett's Bulldogs

Or is it that they have talent but you can't buy a team?

While I haven't played competitive sport for many years now I do know that losing sucked. Surely that feeling doesn't go away?!?! So many of these players seem to be mercenaries, or maybe they were made to look superior based on the people they were surrounded by, and they were good enough to be supporting roles, but in this team they are all expected to be leading lights. Something individually they are not yet mature enough or capable enough to be...time will tell
Roosters and South’s have won premierships buying teams. Even Manly has purchased premierships over the years. It normally takes a while to click though.

As a bloke who doesn't hate Barrett he has plenty to do with his situation
Barrett's makes 101 excuses after EVERY game, making his attempt to coach unfitting and the players have no accountability and will only go backwards and lose belief that can not be won back.....his credibility is shot.
Someone mentioned a talent scout type role, this will soon be his only option

A talent scout LOLOLOL

This is the same guy that got rid of Nico Hynes and Tom Wright to name but 2.

Yeh I think Hasler got rid of Hargreaves and Wayne Bennett got rid of Matt Ballin also, in fact we could go through EVERY NRL coach and find a few big fish that "got away" - part of the game and doesn't mean they can't identify talent.
Personally was not rating him the worlds best scout, but more chance of making a career there than as an NRL coach was the point.

Another thing about the Dogs recruitment that is interesting, is the type of players they chased...
  • Addo-Carr - has been championed as a leader by the Dogs, but was told by Bellamy to tone down his post try antics as it’s a team game. Then he went and had a covid protocol weekend away with guns, to get back to his roots
  • TPJ - Ill disciplined loose cannon who broke covid protocols
  • Brent Naden - white line fever on GF night
  • Vaughan - BBQ gate, culture killer with huge ego.
  • Dufty - BBQ gate who ran from cops and runs away from contact.
Then they bought Okunbor back from obscurity after his extra curricular activities.

Then you look at the Sharks who went for Finucane and Hynes...says it all.

Not saying these players are criminals and that other clubs don’t have their own share of dramas, but the Dogs sure did go and buy a whole host of questionable characters in one fell swoop. When you’re building a club culture, these guys aren’t top of the list.

They bought them because they were "good value" buys after those indescretions. The long term culture harm will far outstrip any short term cap space it affords them though.

Spot on. Will be a while before they contend again. Aside from JJ who is getting a bit long in the tooth. It’s a team full of mercenaries. Coached by an Assistant Coach.

JWH was poached rather than got rid of. He was a big part of manly’s plans but couldn’t offer him as much as the roosters at that stage of his career. Because lots of established first graders needed upgrading.

Zorba recounted how they were deep in discussion and then Jared showed up to training in a new car, and manly knew he had jumped ship.

Yeah he certainly wasn’t told he was surplus to requirements. It was obvious he was going to be a hell of player and that’s why the Roosters came knocking with big bucks. They got three premierships with him in the engine room. It’s not always his stats that show his true worth either...it’s the way he makes everything personal and a contest in the middle.

JWH was poached alright, but let's not forget he was being hunted far and wide for a long time with negotiations dragging out - THIS is what opened the doors for the Chooks (or others) to strike and from a recruitment side of things, not exactly perfect from Manly's end where he preferred to stay....and is along with many others we wanted to keep at Manly and many on Des's time.
Ballin was told by the coach ranked "The Master" he was surplus to requirements along with many others and got it wrong
I don't really think Barrett's recruiting is the problem, more his ability to get the best out of them as a coach
Anyways not sure how I got into this debate....he can't coach and that's the bottom line

I've been saying for a while that he would make a great talent scout as he does have an eye for spotting young talent.

He just can't coach it.

As of today, this is Trent Barrett's head coaching record that I know of:

2014: Italy (2017 RLWC Qualification)
3 games, 2 wins, 0 losses, 1 draw

2014–15: NSW Country Origin
2 games, 1 win, 0 losses, 1 draw

2014: Penrith Panthers U/20's (NYC)
24 games, 12 wins, 12 losses, 0 draws

2016–18: Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles (NRL)
74 games, 29 wins, 45 losses, 0 draws

2021–22: Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs (NRL)
29 games, 4 wins, 25 losses, 0 draws

Total: 132 games, 48 wins (36.36%), 82 losses (62.12%), 2 draws (1.52%)

For Barrett to break even on wins and losses at the Dogs, they have to win their next 21 games. And to break even for his entire coaching career?? He'd have to win the next 36 games he coaches.

Neither are going to happen. It won't even be close.

Bennett never got it wrong with Ballin. He just had too many hookers in front of him at the Broncos like Berrigan and a guy called Michael Ennis.

Ballin was a very good hooker but hardly a world beater - but boy could he tackle and get good quick passes out to his halves.

Many good judges have stated Bennett got it wrong with Ballin and I 100% agree, but that's simply opinion.
Unfortunately you can't keep them all and Every NRL club has let a few go they shouldn't have....just nature of the beast juggling salary caps and rosters.
Keep in mind also, coaches have a say in rosters, but many others are integral with retention and signings.
Back to the topic - Barrett is not proving a good coach and his position in footy will likely be another role, if any.
