Saints score late and survive controversial call to down Manly 12-10
Michael Carayannis, The Daily Telegraph

Manly captain Daly Cherry-Evans blasted referee David Munro while coach Des Hasler says he does not know the escort rule is now after the Dragons came from behind to beat the Sea Eagles 12-10.

Cherry-Evans was furious his side didn’t receive a penalty for an escort play when the Dragons’ Tim Lafai got in the way of Reuben Garrick as the Sea Eagle ran towards a high kick from the halfback in the final play of the game.

“I need to ask the question because that is black and white, that is an escorted player taken off the ball,’’ Cherry-Evans told Munro.

“If you’re willing to make the hard call when the game wasn’t on the line then unfortunately then that call needed to be made by you.’’

After the game Cherry-Evans said “we wanted that call to be made”.

“We are a bit biased and thought it was a black and white call,” Cherry-Evans said. “They saw it the other way. That’s the way footy games go. We just have to suck it up and move on to next week.”

Just minutes earlier the video referee had intervened to rule a penalty for the Dragons when Brad Parker tripped Euan Aitken on a kick chase. Hasler said he had spoken with NRL officials last week regarding the rules of defenders interfering with attacking players during a kick chase,

But the failure to penalise St George Illawarra left him confused.

“I will be taking that to Bernie Sutton,” Hasler said. “I thought it was questionable. It’s not consistent with what they were saying. They spoke to us about it during the week… but they won’t rule on an escort there.”

Just like in last nights game ( and probably most others too ) the refs and touchies don’t have the kahuna’s to blow a penalty in the last few minutes when the game is tight.

Chances are Chez would’ve missed the kick but how many decisions with obstructions, block plays in the previous 75 mins are based on probabilities?

And yes I get that there are plenty of missed opportunities during the game but that doesn’t excuse refereeing the game differently because you don’t want to make a decision that affects the outcome.

Every decision by players, refs, coaches before and during the game affects the outcome.

The refs are always going to make mistakes . The key is to minimize ours so we can compensate for theirs

Motley crew were crap. I remember seeing them at monsters of rock Donnington. Crap... :)
That must’ve been awesome, Donnington, or any of the big metal festivals.

To be honest I never got into them, their story is apparently stuff of legend so gave it a go.

True @BOZO and we made more than a few, but when refs make mistakes and then have an opportunity to second guess themselves, they can. They also have the benefit of two touchies and two more in the video box that seem to pick and choose when they impart their wisdom and that’s the thing that grinds our gears.

Speaking of mistakes, Api made some extremely crucial ones. I don’t normally point the finger but for a player of his experience they were telling tonight.

Mate we cannot control what the refs do but we can control what we do

That was the point I was trying to make

The dragons made 8 errors with the ball and we made 13

I am proud of their effort but sorry I don't pop champagne after a loss and it's sad that manly fans now act like a close loss is good enough. I'm sure Des doesn't think that and it sounds like something Barrett would have said after a loss.

We all hate Manly losing mate, but if we do lose we'd much rather the side goes down swinging like tonight than the capitulations we saw last year.

Can't win everything.

True, we can’t control what the refs do but what they do impacts how we do things.

That first 10 mins we hardly had the ball but the refs’ mistake in not calling Vaughan offside and instead ruling a drop out is one example that then leads to more errors.

As I said before, the refs’ have the luxury of reviewing decisions immediately for certain instances and they still stuff it up too often.

If the NRL insist on making games close then they need to understand that there needs to be accountability and transparency.

We can argue that our mistakes cost us but the players’ don’t have the luxury of “ let me just check if that’s the right play to do”, the refs do.

Speaking from the heart I am a little gutted, not because we lost, rather, because this team that many from the NRL world laughed at when the season started, have quickly realised we are not a walk over as the boys were in it till the end. Many of us endured several years of pain where we were put in similar situations and we were blown off the park as recent as last year. Yes we lost tonight, however, I am such a proud sea eagle even with a loss like that. It has been several years that I haven't felt this way. Several have critiqued our team as 'no chance', for me it is not just about the score, it is about how they make me feel.

The referee blunders, the odd mistakes from our boys, the apparent reserve grade players with apparently no hope is of little concern to me. I had lost my way a little bit the past few years, as the Manly I supported for so many years was not the Manly I was seeing. I will always support the boys regardless how the years pan out, however, the vibe and excitement was slowly dissipating

I can proudly say the emotion once again runs through the body with the efforts recently put forward by our team. Thank you Des/coaching staff and to every single player that represents us, it feels so good to feel the old Manly ways, from the start to the conclusion of every game, HOLD YOUR HEADS UP HIGH BOYS and thank you for the efforts

Well said.
Despite mistakes, they gave us something to cheer about, sure we are gutted by a loss, specially the way it ended, but they went down fighting and showed some pride in the jumper in defence. Loved Api calling them soft for taking the penalty option.

Everyone says this, Tom plays =win, afb plays =win.

They were missing debelin, Widdop and Korbin sims. I don’t think we can play that card.

JDB and Walker were/are both representative players. About the same value to both teams.

Widdop is great but not a fullback which is where he would have played. He is a 5/8 but they already have Hunt and Norman. Tom has much more value to us as a fullback than Gareth does for the Dragons in the same position.

Korbin Sims is a bench player. AFB is the best starting prop in the competition. No contest here.

So yes, even removing JDB and Walker from the equation, and the rest of those players being available, we would have probably won. But it is all hypothetical of course.

Reactions: Sue
Pro: Hearing the crowd in a fairly packed stadium was a refreshing change
Con: My God, don't the St George unwashed whine and whine and whine and whine and....

Biggest positive is we are playing as a team and having a real go. On paper we should of got destroyed but there is real belief in this team and we are only going to get better.

Did you see the huddle in the sheds before they ran out, everyone was focused on daley when he was giving his speech and everyone buying into it, they are playing for one another. They were hurting saints with their defence last night.

Need to just move on now and focus on next week at home against the Raiders.

There will always be human error and the NRL will never and has never got rid of the NRL refs mistakes

The point I was making that it was a very close game and we were always in it and the 5 more loss of possession we had than our opposition played its role

Against Newcastle where the refs cained us but that did not stop us from losing as we put our selves in a more controllable winning position by having better ball control

Why is everyone blaming the refs? We lost by 2 points. Both their tries off kicks the second an unlucky bounce.

The refs were not that bad, at one stage it was 6-0 penalties to Manly in that second half and they did not award st George any piggy back penalties getting out of their own end.

I think our discipline getting off the ruck is so much better this year. Definitely a lot fitter and stronger

I love Calvin and Hobbes. Best thing my ex every introduced me to!

Bill is one of the most reclusive people I've never met.

Did you see his cameo for the comic strip 'Pearls before swine?'

The world went crazy!

Speaking of crazy, how about those crazy stooopid reefs????

That is what used to kill us. Piggy back penalties for ill discipline
Obviously something has changed in relation to how this team carries out the coaching instructions.
And yes, they are much, much fitter.
Reminded me of the defensive displays circa 2007 - 2011
The effort was A+

Outstanding post @Zimbalist - their constitution seems HEAPS better, eh. Especially guys like AFB. Marty's getting more minutes.
