Do we need Walker

Crazy that some people are cool to lose Walker... unbelievable!!!!
Ideally you’d want to keep him; however, given the imposed cap constraints, and our lack of a quality half to partner Cherry, it becomes a question of priorities.

It’s a hard one, but I think it’s a sensible point of discussion.

dylan walker is a quality player who hasn’t had much luck with injury since he’s been at manly. He would be on good coin but I can’t help but think we could save some cap space by letting him go.
Brian kelly is the most improved player in the club if not the whole comp and Suli is getting better every week and was close to our best Thursday night.

I won’t lose any sleep if walker stays but it might be a good option for the club.
I'd be OK with Walker going and Suli and Kelly staying, Walker is on big money which can be used elsewhere

Roster management and succession planning are a constant juggling exercise.

Walker’s personality may also be important in our mix. I’m not close enough to know but certainly a lot more goes into decisions than merely weighing up playing ability and dollars.

Under the circumstances it's closer to smart, than unbelievable mate. Unfortunately.

JBB/JAMES sums it up pretty well in the above post.
I’ts only $350k not a massive hit... and we will get Uate, Hastings, Brown, Lussick’s space as well. The only time we’ve looked like a decent side this season, was when Walker was playing direct... in fact the three weeks he was in the six, we looked real good and ready to go on a run. Rather than cut Walker, I’d be promoting some of the development squad in place of the players I’ve listed above. Kelly is only contracted for next season anyway... then what happens? We have to match the crazy money offered by the Tigers (around $450k-$500k) if we want to keep him in 2020. By then he might be asking for even more. Walker is a game changing international and he’s on $600k, locked in for the next four years... which is a much safer, value for money signing than getting one season out of Brian Kelly on the cheap. Who says he’s even going to sign another contract with us after next season? And you can bank the house on his manager asking for a pay rise if we were stupid enough to get rid of Dylan Walker. Or do you think he’ll be happy to play on a small contract when there are other clubs prepared to triple his salary? Look at Blake Green for an example. Shedding Walker would be completely absurd.

Why is it only a $350k hit if he is on $600+?

$600+ would by the half we NEED more than a $600+ star centre when we have T Wright, Anderson, Parker, Suli etc coming through.

Yeah, we will realise about $1M not resigning Uate, Hastings, Brown, Lussick but Api and Sirro's upgrades will cost probably $300 of that AND we will still need to add 5 top 30 players with thextra 700k. Mr Plod's 500k will help too as it pays the 330k cap reduction and leaves 170k odd to help with other stuff.

These numbers are all projected but give a pretty realistic idea of where we stand.

I think Kev meant the salary cap breach for next year is only $350k

I was referring to the salary cap penalty with the $350k. So we get rid of an international centre, and one of the most potent attacking weapons in the game, in order to sneak one cheap season out of Brian Kelly, who’s somehow not going to demand more money after we let Walks go. Bare in mind he was offered around 500k by the Tigers. Do you REALLY believe he’d be happy to play on a cheap contract knowing the club have thrown all their eggs in his basket. Remember how we had to upgrade a young DCE to keep him happy, remember Green going to the Warriors? How much do you suggest we will have to pay to upgrade Kelly beyond next season? If the Tigers are prepared to offer Kelly around $500k... do you not see the value of Walker on $600k? Again, tell me who this game changing 5/8 is we’re going to be able to acquire... sorry, there’s just no way I see losing Walker as anything but ridiculous. Brian Kelly has been improving and I think he will turn out to be a very good player, but Dylan Walker is already a great player, with plenty of upside still to come. The way he has approached the 5/8 role should illustrate that for you. In 2016 he was crabbing sideways and lost at sea. This season he was playing more direct than just about any other half... hopefully Baz shows Chezza some of footage.

Which half do we swap Walker for? Did you see his impact last season... and this season when he got fit and played superbly at 5/8?

I'm pretty ok with how he was at 5/8 this year. Would really like to have a kicking 5/8 if possible

. His impact was great last year. Why? Because he got LOTS of clean ball from the halves and I think Kelly, Suli etc would go good with clean ball too. Something our backs haven't had this year.

I don't know which suitable half will be available for next year but i'm sure there will be 1 or 2 that recruitment do.

I dunno the solution mate but in our $ predicament, I don't think any $600k+ centre is going to be the best of value.

EDIT: By the way, "our predicament" is not just the $330k cap reduction, it also includes a half on $1.3M, a FB on $1M and a lock on around $800K.

Its not unbelievable at all feathered friend .
Remember the Croker and the Brown supporters on here ? They are still here and still think they are great players and they are entitled to their own expectations and views but somehow I don't think our club will let our most Dynamic centre who is also our only centre that has explosive speed to win us a game from inside our own quarter line .
Walker is our only centre that can win us a game with a match winning try from anywhere on the field with his explosive speed .
We do know that players can improve but we don't know just how much they will improve .
One thing for certain is DYNAMIC WALKER SPEED can not be taught . You either have it or not .
Further more I cant see how you can build premiership winning teams by tearing down your most dynamic payers .
Players like the Dynamic Road Runner International and Premiership winning player Dylan Walker don't come around very often . Blink and they are gone 😉
A tip for some feathered friends on here ....
Next time you are driving on the road look out for the warning signs because .......

do you not see the value of Walker on $600k? .

I see FAR more value in him at $600k+ IF he plays 5/8, not centre. He did good there this year and saves us from buying a $600k player if he stayed there, at centre I see him as not being much value. Does that help explain where i'm coming from?

I think we all want a proper 6 but Barrett let go our last 6 and seems pretty content on using a makeshift/cheap half instead of the top liner we need. You want to get rid of someone, kick someone who deserves it e.g. DCE won't ever happen but we can dream. Walkz has some much passion and love for this team. Don't let the best centre in the NRL just so you can buy a couple of depth players, as Barrett won't be using the money on a proper 6.

Yes mate... I can see your point of view, and I rate a lot of the stuff you post on here. But on this occasion, I will have to respectfully disagree.
