Des-Penn-Buzz

We rode off the back of a star generational player last year having a career year (let's be real here). When he's out, we struggled. Question, when we started the year WITHOUT Tom in those first 4-5 games, how did we go ?

And Des wasn't always terrible like he is these days. From say 2007-2011 he absolutely had the blueprint to succeed, so let's not take that away from him man, jeez
you're harsh.

But he's out of touch now. Games moves past him. Did you hear the commentators last week? Saying Des used to instill that dominance/pride in defense with his team's, then went on to say they didn't know what happened!! Maybe listen to them if you don't want to listen to me.

And guess what? They HAVE worked in the industry and administration. What's your response to those guys ?
Man... I was asking you for your Resume of your coaching experience???? I'm harsh... bahahaha - you slander Des and the players weekly - without fail and I am harsh? lol lol lol. Do I believe there are changes required... absolutely but I also called for mass changes after 4 games last year and was left with egg on my face. I don't think that the club is anywhere near perfect - starting with Penn. Some of the players are just plain useless in my book - Boyle, Sipley, Keppie, Marty at times... Harper at times. Do I think we are ill disciplined especially in giving away penalties coming out of their end - absolutely. Is Des blameless nope - not a chance. But also having played at a decent level and coached... I know full well that sometimes players who are good players make stupid mistakes or don't play up to standard and that is sooo not on the coach. So to me the players needs to take far more responsibility than Des. There is lots of blame to go around I agree. But yes your consistent bleatings that the whole club from top to bottom is rotten is a joke. As for the comments about the defence... I can't comment after Munter pilfered those two balls but up until then the commentators were saying how great Manly's defence was given we kept marching them down the field with the penalties out of their own end plus our errors. My view of our defence also was that it was pretty damn good given we kept thwarting them time after time. DCE's misread was typical DCE sadly, Jake clocking off on the inside was so unJake like. But all in all we were aggressive and our defence wasn't the problem. I never heard the Fox commentators criticising the defence at all - sorry.

You really don’t like him do you. Has he cut your grass or something? 😂

No, but he's not adapting like I'd say 85% of the rest of the league has to the changing game at a club I'm a long term member and fan. A club I'm very plugged in with given the tough times they've helped me through in the past in various levels..

The culture and vibe (even the fans) are just different these days - it's sad.

We've conceded 20+ points in more consecutive games right now, than anytime in the history of our club - that's a long time, and poor record to break.

Someone wrote something similar in another thread (or this one) about the standards Des used to set comparitively speaking, being discussed by the commentators.

It'll be a struggle for me to praise the defensive structures, sorry. It would also be unauthentic.

Also, not sure anyone has to hold a clip board to be able to discuss Des? I played rep footy at school (St Greg's Comp - Jason Taylor), and was a pretty good half , before I switched to Union. But that was an eon ago, and a different time.

Does that qualify me ?

I reckon if the heat is turned up by Penn and the Tigers call Des will be off.
Dealing with the Penn faemmle*
would be a walk in the park compared to ‘Marriage made in Heaven.’

Besides, Des is looking to move into the coaching director’s role at Narravale.

*Look up Ogden Nash and/or Carl Laemmle

yes he has no idea that Hasler - none. He has always been useless - what a dinosaur he is. He was particularly useless last year when we were playing magic football but that wasn't because of anything he did - it was just luck... Injuries, bopunce of the ball etc etc all helped him - he played no part in how good we were last year albeit we had deficiencies in defence. @Ryan when are you putting in your application for an NRL head coaching job or just wondering if you have ever coached at any level at all? Held a recruitment job with a club... talent identification job..... worked in an admin role job with a club, maybe you answered the phones at a club... anything at all? Maybe you visited a club and had a meal there??? Something???

I don't think @Ryan is applying for a position at the club anytime soon @Brisbane Tragic However, he is just as entitled to his opinion (harsh as it is) as you mate. A lot of what he comes up with is pretty valid actually, if not slightly misdirected in my opinion.

The club is in crisis, and clearly our season is in serious jeopardy, if not already over. Our club culture appears almost non-existent, and no one wants to recognise this fact, or take any responsibility for it.

Who is responsible for it? Our owner? Our coach? Our captain? Our team? Our admin?
All of the above?

@Ryan is entitled to question our coaching system, just as I am entitled to question the disintegration of club culture under @scottyfromdigitalwellness, just as you are entitled to defend the sometimes seemingly indefensible/irrational/delusional actions or inactions of our head coach.

I have been critical of Scotty over the years. But to be fair, if me and you are disappointed with how the teams going in 2022. I think he's entitled to feel the same.

When we had the bad start last year. He was offering to bring in a new assistant to help DES out after 6 weeks or so.

He's the owner not the CEO or the coach.
Is that realistically all we can ask from Scotty.

If the team need some extra staff, extra resources, extra chairs etc that he's willing to do what's needed to make us premiers again.

Sure....

What's not needed is to get in the media, publicly scolding your head coach and a player after sone commentary on current issues.

I'm legitimately concerned, as nothing good ever comes when Scotty has his media time.

I do wonder if what has people up in arms is those words were said by Scotty and not a CEO.

Its a bit of tough one, as probably not the first public relations job for Big Tony to get either.

I can't speak for everyone, but what got me pissed was the personal and disciplinary nature of the chastisement of a veteran head coach and the club in general.

He could have done the usual 200 words about regret, importance of refs, mothers etc .. all without saying anything.

But he chose to publicly chastise his coach for standing up to what many impartial critics agreed was a right regal bending over. .. talk about ... NOT BEING ABLE TO READ THE ROOM.

As a management exercise it was clumsy at best ... as PR excercise it was dumb and dumber ...

Unless as the tin foil hat's would have us believe ... it was in fact the deliberate first salvo in a war to remove Dessie and his expensive host of cohorts eating into his coffers.

Good luck to Tony Mestrov. I hope he doesnt turn into a yes man for Penn, because I reckon Penn has the last call on everything, hense why we have gone through so many CEO,s

May be Abdo, Scotty, DES, and the ref can all go for a drive and smoke one of those Egyptian peace pipes 🙂
