If they allow Melbourne to get away with out selling any of their big stars it would be a travesty, every Melbourne fan would then be saying - look the same team that one those two premierships is now under the cap so whats the big deal?
The problem is they were allowed to rort the cap not just now, but most importantly when the players were last negotiating a contract, that's when other clubs would have tabled offer and lost out, offers that would likely end up being more then reduced pay deals these players might agree to now so that they can stay.
I think a good solution to the whole saga is to have an independent NRL office set up to deal with contract negotiations, what it would do is collect and keep on record all offers given to a player, and then record the players decision. (It would not be involved in convincing a player either way.) That way alarm bells would ring straight away if a situation arose like in Melbourne, where a player is 'officially' on far less then they are being offered elsewhere. Someone at Canberra was suggesting this recently in regards to the Dugan negotiations, since they feel the Roosters are cheating to get him. The suggestion has been that they have way more free to offer him then the Roosters and he is still going so why?
