Coach Seibold thoughts so far.... so good

The biggest myth going around on here is that we need a "Manly man"

We won comps with Bozo and Des because they were all time great coaches - not because they played for the club.

We just need a really good coach no matter the background

What isn't a myth is this: the fact that EVERY premiership we have ever won, we have won it with a "Manly man" at the helm.

Furthermore, any and every time we've had a non-Manly man here at the helm, it's been nothing other than a failed experiment - cases in point: Phil Lowe, Peter Sharp, Trent Barrett, Anthony Siebold.

So, until a non-Manly man wins us a premiership the above stated FACT remains a FACT.

Spot on. Ron Willey, Frank Stanton, Bozo, Hasler. Manly premiership winning coaches, all played over 100 first grade games for the club.

NB I think you meant Graham Lowe, not Phil 😀

Have we ever had a world class coach here that didn't play for Manly?

We can go around in circles here, but if you think it was the fact that Des and Bozo played for Manly was the primary reason they won a premiership as coach here, then I'll politely agree to disagree.

How many games did Cleary play for Penrith and Bellamy play for Melbourne incidentally?

We just need a really good coach, and yes if they played for Manly then even better.

The chances of us landing a proven world class coach are next to zero. The options then seem to be going with a rookie and hope we strike gold (which we tried with Barrett) or picking someone with Manly DNA who has a passion for the place. The fact other teams have won comps without a homegrown coach does not disprove that Manly’s success has always been with a Manly coach.

Had the game moved on between 1972 and 2011? Or just the last 13 years?
Heaps of changes in the last 10 years. Bunker, video ref scrutinising tries to the millisecond. Stupid 6 agains, hate them, but tolerate them when Manly get them. Rule review focuses that last 2 weeks or so but pop up again randomly. Sin bin phases, drastically affecting games.
HIAs, definitely good for players futures, a good thing.
Miss the old days though.

Can’t disagree with that. Plenty of changes, but I still say the game was better 10 years ago by a long way. Six agains have ruined the game imho.

We were talking more about changes that may have a bearing on whether manlys success under “manly men” could or couldn’t be replicated in today’s game. I say it can.

Thought that I would let you all know, that we are somehow 2-0, ever since Seibold said "every one of us is going to die. Every. Single. One. Of. Us.", and compared rugby league to Gaza, in a presser.

What's baffling is that after every ridiculous Seibold comment we seem to do better.

"I don't concern myself with the result" - afterwards we flog Brisbane

"Trying something different" kicking duel - a much improved performance against the reigning Panthers while down on troops

"Free throw at the stumps" - we win against the Cowboys the week after

Maybe the solution to our problems is simply Seibold saying increasingly stupider things?

Said it another thread, but I swear I have seen signs of, like, actual coaching in the last two games. Adapting the game plan, showing more patience, concentrating on trying to win the middle and work teams over in the early stages of the game in order to reap the rewards as the game goes on. Much less "Weapons! Weapons! Weapons!" than before.

And yes, I know we've had two wins against two teams playing poorly. But it's better than losing to those teams, like we have been doing. Baby steps, maybe.

Marvellous how a hint of getting the sack has focussed the mind of Mr Blandings.

Well his decision to not choose a halfback in the game vs Souths last year certainly worked.

Oh wait, no it did not.
