Bulldogs - Salary Cap Cheaters

The dog has a strategy which anyone coach could use but it cripples a club. His strategy is to go on the market and buy good players using back ended contracts to lure them. He did it to Manly and now he's done it to the dogs. If the strategy works you might win a comp before the back ended contracts kick in and you're hailed as a super coach, if it doesn't work you don't win a comp people start asking questions and when the back ended contracts kick in you end up being sacked and the club is crippled as the Dogs are now.
It's funny that Hasler didn't "hit the wall" from back-ended contracts during the 8 seasons he coached us. Also funny he didn't want to leave us in 2011 and only signed with the dishlickers because he feared he wouldn't be offered a new contract, something that was alluded to early in the 2011 season by Graham Lowe before he departed due to ill health. I also find it funny that Hasler had one bad year last year and suddenly the game has passed him by. Hasler had a plan and after the 2011 GF declared we would go back to back. No way the Gifty debacle would have erupted had Hasler been there and fundamentally that debacle was the catalyst for our implosion from late 2014 onward and we have not yet recovered from that.

Bring back Hasler and we will win the comp in 2020.

He's the kind of coach that needs a general manager like a US sports franchise. He can't be given unilateral control of salary cap and recruitment and retention. He'll cripple a club in order to try for some short term success. He's a control freak though so whether he agrees to coach under a gm is another issue.

Previous CEO Dave Perry tried to control Des’s absolute madness ( and let me assure you he’s a nutter) and this was the start of the whole Des to the Bulldogs deal.

If I believed Dave Perry the previous CEO, 90% of what you just wrote isn’t true!!

He valued my input and told me a lot more than he probably should have.

There’s two very very different narratives on this, yours and the other one.

The truth may be in the middle I guess!!

Apparently their situation is so bad that with 14 players on min wage in 2019 they are still over the cap.

We thought it was bad when Des left Manly....

They should try to offload FOURan and Woods for a start. But which club would pay much for them - possibly only the Gold Coke or Newcastle who seem to have a bottomless cap.
Then the two Morris boys will go, even though they are playing well and probably have another two seasons left at the top level.
I wonder what the TPA's are like at the Dogs?

No doubt Des had back ended deals at the Dogs, but in the commentary in the media in relation to this you have to remember that it is in the interests of the new board/coach and CEO to paint the old board/coach and CEO out to be worse than they really were so they have an excuse for their own poor performances.

The current board/coach and CEO must take some responsibility. A case in point is Michael Lichaa. The old guard had decided to let him go. The new guard decided to keep him, saying he had performed poorly because Des didn't know how to use him and Pay knew better. That turned out well - they dropped him to reserve grade earlier this month and he's still there. Maybe they should have let him go after all.

I'm not trying to absolve Des and the rest of the old guard from responsibility here - no doubt they probably deserve the lion's share for the decisions made around Graham, Woods and Foran (which are obviously far bigger than the one made about Lichaa). As between Des/Raelene and the board, I don't know who should take most of the responsibility. I may be wrong but I thought I read the Dogs board were taking decision making authority away from Des a while before most of the worst decisions were made (at around the same time Des lost most of the support staff he had brought with him).

In any case it isn't fair to lay the entirety of the Dogs' woes at Des' feet. From what I have seen Dean Pay is a terrible coach.

This is where all this Klemmer chatter came from - obviously all the NRL teams will look to dissect the club, knowing they MUST release players and all be hunting to take the best available players.
Who does this leave??
Klemmer would add to any roster in the NRL, but the pickings are slim.....I like that backrower Mariner but there's not a heap of others that are even worthwhile.

Josh Jackson is the pick of the lot that they have. Very much a Choc style player that we are badly missing.

Fair enough, does well but a poor mans Choc at best - missed Jackson but don't pay too much attention to them - definately add him to the other 2.....

despite all the losing the knights are actually in a good spot. They were able to front load contracts so rather than backended deals they're paying less from what i've heard. When you don't spend up to the cap you can bring forward salary allocations

I reckon Faitala-Mariner is a better hole runner than jackson. Jackson reminds me of michael luck, a toiler who defends a lot and doesn't offer a great deal in attack. I think him or Klemmer is who i would take.

Who controls strong characters like Bellamy and Bennett ?

Look I think Des was a great coach and we certainly had a star studded side BUT in the modern era you have to be Cap compliant , so you need a strong coach, a good CEO and a great financial whiz.

I don’t have an issue with backending a couple of players but when you do it with a 1/3 of your roster then you are on a recipe to disaster.

What DP was trying to do ( under instructions from the then board) was trying to pull back financial control NOT which player or for how long or what to pay other than getting us compliant.

Des was basically telling everyone to **** off and let me do it , trouble is if he kept at it .....well you know the endgame!

Why doesn't the NRL manage everything ? All players paid by NRL only.

If you want to give a player a TPA give the money to NRL who then pay the player.

If any money end up in a players account that is not from the NRL it's illegal.

30 Players x 16 clubs mean 480 players total. They would need 1 or 2 people on the payroll staff.

We are talking about the same nrl here aren't we, that is so far from their mindset it's not funny

One thing guaranteed, you would never get a job at the nrl with your sensible, logical thinking

Possibly. A great mate of mine is very close to Crusher. Went to lunch with them a couple of times and so I got their side of the story from Crusher's point of view, which is what I have shared with you.
