If you seriously think the SMH is centre right, I hate to think what you would call left of centre. Pravda?
And the labour party moving to the right? With a 50% renewables target and open borders? Seriously?
As for tax rates - I pay 49c in the dollar - is that what you would call "virtually tax free". Over half the Australian population pay no net tax, meaning the other half is footing the bill. Is that what you call "equitable and proportionate"?
As for the nirvana that you suggest is Europe, it seems all is not so rosy in Merkels socialist utopia these days, given she can't form government in Germany, and the UK voted to get out. Some of those scandanavian countries you no doubt see as nirvana have the highest tax rates in the world.
How did we get into debt? Maybe because of the creep of socialist nanny state welfareism, where half the country has their hand-out expecting something for nothing, instead of pitching in, having a go and trying to better themselves, and indirectly, the country.
I wont get into much discussion with you about these issues because its not the right site. Try The Conversation for that.
You would be one of the unfortunate wealthier people Terry who pay their full tax, and you are right the income taxes are being paid by only a small majority of people here. Such is the craziness of the system. But those I know who are wealthy, some in the billions, have all sorts of ways of minimising their tax to a point in some cases where they virtually end up paying little or none at all.
I happen to have a close friend who is a corporate solicitor with vast experience and knowledge regarding minimising tax (assisted by his successful accountant brother) and has the contacts needed to achieve that. He deals with the wealthy all the time, some the wealthiest in the country, and I can assure you there are a lot of wealthy people out there who avoid what many of us naive people think they are paying. I suspect you dont have a creative accountant and solicitor.
And dont confuse socialism with a limiting of capitalist excesses. Those European nations are not socialist, they are countries that are better able to limit the excesses of unconstrained capitalist excesses as exists in the US
