Possibly a different set up as in a sliding scale over the years or increased percentage of the cap. There are many ways to skin a cat.Didn't the league make backended contracts illegal?

Fair point , A bit like when Manly let Kite goBut that’s just it - he does improve the club by improving the salary cap position.
It’s such a simplistic way to look at the squad and say we are keeping everyone - doesn’t work like that.
In order to keep our next generation of up and comers - the club has to release some players and improve the salary cap position.
Marty is the 4th highest paid player at the club. He certainly isn’t the 4th most influential player at the club.
If we lost key up and comers because we had Marty on +$800k people would lose their ****.
It’s a balancing act by the club - all the time. And if losing Taupau for Woods frees up coin for something better long term / I’m all for it.
I wouldn't compare Kennedy to Woods but I get where your coming fromwhile i don't think its fair to compare the two, when we signed ben kennedy i couldn't understand why we would buy a bloke that is always injured.
i had no prior idea of what he would bring to the club, now he is recognised as one of the most important purchases manly has made in the last 20 - 30 years.
maybe woods can offer something off field to the younger guys at the club...
or maybe not!😉
Short memories are plentiful here ,BUT -I wouldn't compare Kennedy to Woods but I get where your coming from
Des changed his selection approach and we are playing differently. My criticism of Des has ceased as a result. But to suggest we were wrong and Des kept doing what he was doing and proved us wrong is inaccurate.Short memories are plentiful here ,BUT -
At the time, everybody here was not impressed on the Kennedy signing .He had been out of form already for a couple of years.
And we were proven wrong once again, just the same as Des bashers were this year .
Are you saying Woods could be another Kennedy ?Short memories are plentiful here ,BUT -

Thompson is complete qualityyeah, Josh Jackson is similar to Jake, rarely plays a bad game and always gives 110%. Gets through so much work and dont think I have ever seen him miss a tackle.
That Thompson they have is a goer, typical Englishman. Knows only one way and that's hard and straight up the middle.
People were calling for his contract to be terminated .Des changed his selection approach and we are playing differently. My criticism of Des has ceased as a result. But to suggest we were wrong and Des kept doing what he was doing and proved us wrong is inaccurate.
No , I don't think he will ,but you never know (He grew up a fan)Are you saying Woods could be another Kennedy ?
Well it all depends on what Tapau does , can't see Woods coming ifTapau stays
I think what Des has right that a lot of us probably missed (myself included) is that he knows it will take a large number of players to be firing at the right time to be in the mix to win this thing. I actually think his selections are designed to ensure that we have a lot of players with enough first grade experience to slot in as and when they are needed. This is much more important now than in our golden era when we would generally trot out the same 17 every week (with possibly 1 or 2 or at the most 3 changes due to injuries or suspensions). It takes a bigger squad to win the comp these days.People were calling for his contract to be terminated .
If that had happened we would not be sitting where we are today.
Des said from the start ,"It's just football ,we need a win and we will build from there".
"Des cant coach ! ,sack him ! ,imaginary multiple season connecting loss records" !
Fans were threading nooses four games into the season.
Des didn't listen to the armchair critics voices on what to do next .
He did his thing thankfully.
Not so mad, MarcusI think what Des has right that a lot of us probably missed (myself included) is that he knows it will take a large number of players to be firing at the right time to be in the mix to win this thing. I was keen to get rid of AFB. Thought it would renew our forward dynamic and it has. Same with Taupau, get the feeling we are clinging on to him (as fans) because of his past and size. Makes good metres but not a firebrand anymore and - while I greatly respect his efforts and leadership over the years - is a little bit expendable in the face of our new emerging forwards. Something a 700-850k player shouldn't be. Remember we still have Aloiai, Davey and Saddler to return, as well as Burbo's development and inevitable promotion over the next season or so. Make some cheap signings for depth like Woods that would do a fine job (doesn't neccessarily have to be Woods) and then distribute the rest toward re-signings and maybe another star signing somewhere in the backline or lock position.Remember when we lost AFB and everyone thought the sky would fall down. I've been saying for 2.5 years we should let Taupau go. It's not value for money having a prop average 140m a game on that massive coin.
Yeah he's a "leader" of sorts but again I'm not so sure, he seems more an individual than anything else. He is actually quiet on the field so that leadership idea is a bit exaggerated.
A prop rotation of Paseka, Aloiai, Keppie, Sipley and Woods is more than enough. Add in Saddler, Tuitivake and Fainu we are well covered and it allows is to retain the rest of the squad. I'm not sure letting Siro, Gosie and Boyle and Funa go will solve our tight cap squeeze.
I'm not sure the experience of being 'owned' at Origin level is the sort of experience we need to bring. You could say that Woods brings experience, he's a former Origin and Test player after all.
I will give you a tip and all the others sensitive souls that get annoyed by other peoples postsPerspective time.
I don't think Bozo gives a rats arse about how his posts might annoy other members. This is not necessarily a bad thing. 😎
Bozo posts to the beat of his own drum, with his own unique perspective on display in every post.
Quite often I am looking at Bozos posts from a completely different perspective, but have also noticed that these posts often create havoc/entertainment/derision etc from many other Silvertails.
His perspective in posts appears to be often based on absolutely authentic and original thoughts. A characteristic that many other posters are found lacking in.
Post away Bozo but I am wondering if a small change to "Its perspective time" might even be more effective at garnering responses from other members.......positive or negative. Or even better change to "Its perspective time by Bozo" to maximise response levels.

Yes but perhaps you and others are somewhat protected having to only worry about hitting the post button on opinions and ideas.Des changed his selection approach and we are playing differently. My criticism of Des has ceased as a result. But to suggest we were wrong and Des kept doing what he was doing and proved us wrong is inaccurate.
Aaron Woods.... lol lol lol. Marty was superb again last night - all effort - great yardage and punishing defence. He led the forwards all night. Swap him for Woods? Not a snowflake's chance in hell!
