2026 recruitment & retention

Croker may not play again , but may not get a medical retirement either , that “ could “ be $400k more
Not entirely sure how this works, but I think the medical retirement means player is paid for the reminder of the contract but that amount doesn't count on the club's cap.

If a player just decides to retire mid-contract, without 'medical retirement', then the contract is finished by mutual consent. Player doesn't have to play and club doesn't pay, and the rest of the contract amount no longer counts on the cap.

Of course clubs have been suspected of 'encouraging' some players to retire, with some off-the-books inducement (allegedly) precisely because of the salary cap relief. (Josh Jackson springs to mind)

It's only one set amount for the club, no matter how many players qualify
It’s up to $300k unless they reduced it since 2016? The more recent CBA may have changed this but can’t see it being less?

Increasing the veteran player allowance by up to 50 per cent. This move recognises that clubs and players should be rewarded for long service. The allowance will now apply to players serving six years with a club (previously 8 years.) The allowance will be on a sliding scale with a maximum $250,000 per club in 2015 and $300,000 in 2016

#JobsForTheBoys

Remember when the league's club would have a heap of cellar men

If we are thinking of signing Klemmer we should have resigned Sipley as similar player and dollars. Disappointing Jazz is going he looked good at lock and means Jake could play prop. Paseka, Tak, Jake and Bully not a bad prop rotation, Navale cover injuries. We need a hooker and a lock that can both tackle and have footwork and speed.
Apparently Jake 'Dick' Turpin is a Lock now. Apparently.

I think there’s an element of insurance pay out as well? Which is why it can be such a long and frustrating process to get the approval?
At least one case I read about (maybe Choc Watmough) where the league signed off on medical retirement but the club's insurance company didn't agree (!) so Choc got his money from the club, not the insurers, but the league didn't count it on the cap.

(This probably should be over in the corruption thread!!!)

Need to extend/lock in Koula long term. Becoming elite. Still think his best position is FB along the lines of Pappy, Walsh, Weekes - electric. Imagine him bringing the ball back at speed.

Bears and Rugby360 would have to be sniffing around.
