2018 Rd 5 - Manly v Titans: - Pre-Game Discussion.

Few things Darcy a done deal bar signed to Wolfpack so forget about him.
Going by 21 selected for first few rounds,
Frank or jack gosiewski will start with later off bench. Lane and perrett will be rotation props. Sipley starts to be in mix now.
At back Matthew Wright safest and best option, with all due respect Hastings a half or hooker. Wing depends on fitness of walker if he back if not given who a squad member Tom Wright obvious choice but I say Parker will move to wing.

Fair side for the Intrust too, noticing the centres, Faina, Sipley and Paseka:

23 Honeti Tuha
4 Jade Anderson
19 John Folau
3 Jacob Loko
5 Jono Wright

6 Tom Wright
14 Joey Lussick

18 Taniela Paseka
9 Manase Fainu
10 Toafofoa Sipley
11 Frank Winterstein
12 Lewis Brown
13 Tom Amone

Interchange
15 Peter Schuster
17 Tyler Cassel
22 Fred Junior Mauala
21 Tekina Valiea

Whoever fills in at fullback has to have a lot of experience at the position. Hastings, Anderson and M Wright are really the only 3 options.

...and Tom Wright. He had some outstanding games at full back and started in that position when he came to Manly

Assuming M Wright to fullback, then that wing spot will be taken by Jono or T Wright or Funa.
2 kids with talent and zero NRL experience, vs a guy with 120 games, including semi-finals.
Will be an interesting decision. T Wright was named in the extended team last week so may get a run, although does he have any experience at all as a winger? It is such an important role nowadays.

Talking of experience as a determinant for selection would mean no one would be selected from lower grades. The risk has to be taken. Tom Wright is a speedster with uncanny attacking ability. he defends quite well...a little grabby...but he's strong and has a fine kicking game. He must come into the team somewhere. Time to ignite Captain Twilight

If lussick is off elsewhere then Gosieweski deserves a run.

Frank will be brought in to cover siro. Really disappointing to lose him.

I think they Hastings is the best option at full back. Api can play 80mins at 9, esp against the titans.

Bring Joey lussick or fainu as utility.

As mentioned only players in the Top 30 can be selected unless there is no one left at that position and given we have J wright and T Wright it’s unlikely we would get dispensation. That said, if Lussick is granted a release we could use that spot and the cap space created to either upgrade a development player or a second tier player into that spot.
I have heard that John Folau may get a spot in the 30..... i hope not though

Hey that's a cool nick name for Tom.
Tom "Twilight" Wright......I like it

We may not have alot of choice about our 30. That penalty will mean we probably need a cheap player on the books.

A couple of thoughts.

Top 30 players are required to have a $110k+ contract. Anyone outside our current 28 is on less and will require upgrading. $

If Darcy is gone we need to add 3 of them before july 1 according to the rules. $$$

Surely we will get an exemption of some sort until our appeal is not concluded before july 1...if that appeal is accepted of course.

I think if Darcy is actually gone that will free up around 200k, which will just about pay for the 3 upgrades we will need.

I don't believe we have anything left of our cap after we need to deduct 330k if our appeal fails.

Whoever plays fullback can hopefully handle the pressure of NRL, is safe under the high ball and can tackle. M Wright for me is the safest option and I wouldn’t be taking risks in someone flashy against the Titans.

The minimum for a player in the Top 30 is actually 70k. players 1-26 have a minimum of 100k and players 27-30 have a minimum of 70k. Given development players are on 60k there isnt much needed to upgrade one of them if Baz thinks they are ready.

We are also only able to fill two of the remaining 3 spots as the money paid to Myles fills one of those positions. so there is enough money to make a couple of different moves with what is left. There is also Moses Suli to make a decision on, given he is on a short term training contract the club will need to upgrade that at some point, should they wish to keep him to either a development or NRL contract.

Although there was talk given the cap pressure for next year that they may just use the 200k to prepay some players 2019 contract money into this year and create more space for next year.

I cant see us getting an exemption from the NRL. In the backs there is still J Wright, Tevita Funa and T Wright from the Top 30 unused, in the forwards there is Sipley, Winterstein, Gosiewski, Paseka, Brown even excluding Darcy.
