2017 TEAM - THE NO BS 'TRUMP' ANALYSIS

Pretty poor attempt at a "Trump" analysis. If it was accurate, all NZ'ers would be deported and gone and then you just make up what players you want in empty slots.

Not a bad line up... Jorge has been with us for 5 seasons now so repeat after me Taufua Taufua Taufua Taufua Taufua Taufua Taufua Taufua Taufua Taufua 😉

So let's cut the BS and discuss REALITY.

1. Tom T (Brett presumably gone) = SUPERSTAR, GREAT
2. Taufua = SERIOUSLY AVERAGE, CAN'T CATCH BOMBS, SLOW AS HELL, AND NOT IMPROVING. MASSIVE ROBLEM.
3. Walker = GREAT, JUST NEEDS AN INJURY FREE RUN.
4. No idea = SERIOUSLY WE DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE ANYONE WITH MATAI AND WILIAME GONE, AND PUHLEEEEASE DON'T EVEN MENTION LEWIS BROWN. MASSIVE PROBLEM.
5. Matt Wright/Jono Wright/Uate = THREE VERY AVERAGE RESERVE GRADERS. MASSIVE PROBLEM.
6. Green = GOOD BUT HARDLY PREMIERSHIP CHANGER
7. DCE = WEIGHT OF THE WORLD WITH LITTLE TO WORK WITH.
8. Lussick = EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS IN 2016 BUT HAS A LOT OF WORK AHEAD.
9. Parcell = NEEDS TIME AND WILL ONLY IMPROVE.
10. Myles = WORST BUY OF 2016 BAR NONE. CAN'T BREAK AN EGG.
11. Taupau = CARRIED FORWARDS IN 2016 AND WILL HAVE TO REPEAT IT.
12. No idea = AGAIN MASSIVE PROBLEM TO NOT EVEN HAVE A TRUE 12 SORTED.
13. Jake T = CHAMPION

14. Koroisau = GREAT UTILITY VALUE.
15. Fonau-Blake = BIG POTENTIAL IF FIT ENOUGH.
16. Lawrence = TIME WILL TELL BUT TIME IS TICKING.
17. Winterstein = RESERVE GRADER. CHANCES OF STARRING. DOUBTFUL.

18. Brown = RESERVE GRADER FOR INJURY COVER ONLY.
19. Sironen = RESERVE GRADER. CHANCES OF RESURRECTION? DOUBTFUL.
20. Lane = RESERVE GRADER. CHANCES OF RESURRECTION? POSSIBLE.
21, 22, 23.... a stack of other reserve graders.......

WHAT WILL BE MISSING BADLY.
Stewart (the pre 2016 version)
Matai
Lyon
Buhrer
Vave

WHAT WE WON'T MISS.
Burgess
Green
Starling
Wiiame (tried hard but never a first grader)
and the rest of them moved on...

VERDICT.
Oh boy a VERRRRY long year ahead folks.
13th place would be a miracle at this point.
Hey champ in that crystal ball of yours can you see if I win lotto also next year we haven't kicked a ball yet and the doom and gloom brigade come out, mate if your that confident that we finish 13th as you predict(in your crystal ball) then put money on it,in your verdict it should be a safe bet right.

Doom and Gloom Brigade.... ha. Like it.
They'll say their realistic and long time supporters so entitled to look at everything negatively....

Facts are we were close to making the finals in 2016 even with a shocking injury run to key players. The draw from hell. The match fixing scandal. The new coach. Transition period. And we came very very close to Making it into the 8...that's making the best of your situation if you ask me.

I reckon we're building nicely.
Locke, Lane, Uate and Sirronen are all not playing first grade for individual reasons but not because of lack of talent.
There's a theme to what Bozo is buying/building and it's talented players who aren't getting a start for whatever reasons.

Considering we also have approx $1.4m in cap tied up in 2 players - reckon we're sitting very comfortably. Realistically this money will be available in 2018 to purchase some quality stars.

All 4 players mentioned above to have great seasons, combined with the rest of the team and prove the Doom and Gloom Brigade wrong.
Well said champ

Don't see this situation nearly as negatively as this...Taufua is not very average, nor is he a massive problem. He's a very good winger on his day, who knows the way to the line and can throw a fast pass back inside. Lane and Sironen are very promising backrowers who are fast, have skills and have tasted a bit of first grade. Green will bring a solid, experienced hand to the halves. Myles shores up the ruck area, despite not breaking tackles.
Meehan and Hoppa are touted as gun players of the future. Locke was exceptional once, and could be again.

Look for positives my friend, the world isn't all darkness and despair.
Agree 100% george is a very good player with ball in hand a real asset i wld say in coming off your own line & can finish off with the best of them.. Yeah he has issues with the high ball .. He also gets the blame for coming in from time to time but a lot of that is caused from others not doing their job on the inside.. I like george he is a powerhouse providing everyone else is doing their job .. Dont know why anyone would want to single him out he takes the hit ups no one else wants..

Throwing my own YART into the ring....

For mine, Tommy isn't a centre. Sure he can play there and he'll probably look like a superstar doing it, but I think he's of better value at fullback. Locke and Jorge are the tough ones. I've always felt that Jorge would be the perfect replacement for Steve Matai and with Locke having a lot more pace plus being a fair bit better under a high ball I've gone for him on the wing.

The forwards pretty much pick themselves. I wish we had someone better than Sironen or Lane or Brown for the back row (i.e. I wish we had Ferris still), but the pack isn't bad.

Not saying we can win the premiership with that team, but we'll be better than 2016 if we have a decent injury run (and if Barrett is actually allowed to coach the team rather than what most of us suspect).

I'd probably put Sironen and Lane on almost equal footing, hopefully they put heaps of pressure on each other and may the best man win.

just call me a rebel

I get where you are coming from though, the 25 will come from the 39.

Wonder if we have any more coming ( guess not if we are paying the Legends out not to play), might also mean we only get 23 top tier players also?

If I was to do an unbiased even handed view of the squad it would look something like this

B Stewart – At his best arguably the finest fullback Manly has ever seen but question marks linger over his knees and mental commitment after a poor 2016. Would walk into the number 1 at his best but at this stage doesn’t look like he will make it back to his best. A legend none the less

Tom Turbo – A superstar in the making and will likely light up 2017 in the number 1. That said not the finished article, needs work as the last line of defence and could improve his defensive positioning

Locke – A talented player who has had his mental demons, could prove to be a handy acquisition to cover fullback and wing but first must prove himself in preseason. Not even contracted yet so lets not be counting our chickens

Taufua – A very good player with a few shortcomings. Invaluable coming out of our own end and a great knack for powering over in the corner. Obviously the high ball is his concern but for now the pro’s outweigh the cons. If he was safe as a house under the high ball he would be a rep winger

Uate – Finest winger in the game 4 years ago but has fallen a long way from grace. Big risk in hoping a changing of clubs can recapture that form

Matt Wright – Fringe first grader would can provide depth but do not expect him to suddenly step up a level

Jono Wright - Fringe first grader would can provide depth but do not expect him to suddenly step up a level

Dylan Walker – Very talented centre who should be playing regular rep football. 5/8 is not his go

Matai – A legend whose body has caught up with him, will be sorely missed

Parker – Looked very comfortable in his few appearances in the top grade which bodes well……too early to call

Omar – Was a hot young talent a few years back but plateaued with a stint in Japan, trilling for a contract but doubt he will make much of an impression in first grade

Kelly – Young and talented but raw, high hopes and could get an early crack at centre, but nothing is certain with rookies

Green – A solid first grader who will get the job done and a big body in defence. IF DCE got injured and he had to lead the team could see him becoming the whipping boy. If DCE fires though, Blake could get a lot of the credit for relieving the pressure

DCE – Had his excuses but underperformed last year though not as bad as some on here would claim. Really needs to step it up in 2017

Cullen – Talented but small, I see him carving out as a career as a fringe first grader at a few clubs (ala Issac John or Daniel Mortimer),

Lussick – Always had potential but I was sceptical if he would ever deliver but last year he stepped up. If he can keep it going can put his name in Origin mix. Hopefully not just a career year in 2016

Myles – Some say our worst ever signing which I think is harsh. If you had watched him at the Titans I don’t know what you expected, sure his form was down but he was never going to bust tackles and make 150m. He’ll continue to feature and continue to be solid…..which will be disappointing for the money he is on

AFB – Young and developing nicely, can make good metres but can be exposed laterally in defense

Lawrence - A bit injury plagued of late, but a solid performer who can be relied upon to pitch in with his share of the work.

Lane – Built a reputation on a handful of good games for the Dogs who then promptly let him go to the warriors where he did nothing. Massive question marks

Meehan – Loose cannon off the field but was hugely promising a few years back….hard to say if he can make it back after all that time

Sironen – Like many, talented but yet to deliver consistently, a Mateo in that respect and this signing could turn out exactly like Mateo……or if he pulls his head in and is played to his strengths in a Glenn Stewart mould he could be a revelation. Flip of the coin job but not a bad punt

Taupau – IMO was great in 2016, sure less highlight reel stuff but really carried the pack whith consistent metres and high tackle counts – STAR

Jake – Continue as is and he plays Origin in 2017, hopefully captain next year and future Manly legend

Brown – Forum whipping boy and a victim of his own versatility. Can cop him as a bench utility but not as a starting centre, backrower or hooker

Api – Natural footy player but does he have the service to be a standout No9

Parcell – Forum favourite and has the tools to be a great No9 but for mine didn’t step up in 2016 like expected…….big year ahead

Hoppa – Always been a promising junior but can he step up……..again flip of a coin

Winterstein - If he is a regular I think we are in trouble

Bainbridge – Like the look of him but probably a season too early, could see him grab a couple of limited bench appearences

Let's take any top 8 talk off the table immediately. 2017 is all about building talent, and then hopefully recruit well enough next off-season to take a crack at the 8 in 2018. If I see improvement from the likes of the Turbo brothers, Walker, Sironen and Parcell, I will be happy. Then let's see if the likes of Uate and Green show enough form this year to warrant their positions in 2018.

??? We didn't miss the 8 by that much after a season from hell re injury, draw and controversy. There is only one team in the comp who should not have designs on making the eight and that is Newcastle due to their incredibly young roster.

If a team containing DCE and Green as halves plus players like the T brothers,Walker,Tapau,Lussick and some real talented youngsters like Kelly,AFB,Hoppa,Parcell etc does not have designs on making the 8 that will do me !Why bother running out.The comp is littered with sides with similar standard rosters. We can make it and will make it.
