I'd imagine with only 26 players signed we'd be among the clubs with the most top 30 spots still open. I'd also imagine that two of these spots are being kept for Walker (who frankly I'd prefer goes elsewhere) and The Blade Runner (who hopefully becomes available later in the season).
I've always thought it wise to keep one spot available well into the season knowing that clubs often pick up good, but disgruntled, mid-season transfers at bargain prices.
Ideally we need another centre, but it doesn't seem like there is an established one available. A 'reserve' fullback would also be nice, but also unlikely to have NRL experience. I wonder if we'll simply promote one or more of our development players into the top 30, and put another junior into his development position?

I thought we could have Fainu at 31 thus not taking up a spot on the roster ??

With his salary being paid by the NRL and not on the salary cap.

So I think holding one spot only, and he’s more likely to be going elsewhere I think.

Is that the case if he is cleared to play; we'd have 31 players in our top 30? Or would we have to release one of our top 30 in order to fit him into our roster?
As it stands with our 26 signed players I think we have all positions covered with the exception of a back-up fullback and another centre. The Lawman can play hooker (and halfback in an emergency) so I'm not worried about needing to acquire a further hooker (plus we have the North Shore Chinese restaurant in our Development squad). I'm happy with the way the roster is shaping and I'd rather see one of our 'pathway' players given the nod over an import, unless of course that import is really special.

My opinion is with Walker more than likely going ( at least in 23), and Marty going they might be holding their gunpowder for a couple of big names signings for 23 and beyond.

Those two alone account for about 1.2 / 1.3 million.

(plus we have the North Shore Chinese restaurant in our Development squad).
Are you referring to Gordon Chee Kum Tong?
You were in the discussion only a day or 2 ago in the Tyron May thread in which we discussed the harm caused by casual racism!
So nothing innocent about this not-hilarious name you've given the young bloke. It was deliberate. To make sure he'll know he's going to be 'the Chinese guy' while ever he's at Manly.
Who cares if he's born in Australia? or if his heritage has nothing at all to do with China?

Here's an article from a couple of years ago. Gordon if you hear about this thread rest assured there are many Manly fans who don't think of you as just the Chinese restaurant guy, and we congratulate you on making it to the Development Squad and look forward to what is hopefully a long successful NRL career with the Sea Eagles

I have seen Gordon play and he looks a great prospect. I'm still trying to get my head around being called a casual racist though. Previously I've been simply accused of making bad dad jokes. As you know there is a suburb on the North Shore named Gordon. The surname sounds like one of the many Chinese restaurants I frequent because I love Asian food.
Last night I heard a female Aboriginal stand-up comic ask: What do you call a baby born to an Aboriginal mother and a ginger-haired father? "A boomeranger..."
Now, I thought that was funny, but should I be laughing at what appears to be "casual racism"? Or is it OK if you are an Aborigine, or a ginger-headed man for that matter?
Anyway, from now on I'll be more mindful of what I write and I'll only refer to the young lad who proudly wears my team's colours as Gordon.

I'm not being rightous as I know Ive made plenty of poor comments or bad jokes over the years. Never with any intent but it is important to note it is the IMPACT, not the intent that matters.

I've also come to realize that I have no right to decide if people are offended or not.

So a joke minimising someone to to be only the sum of their ethnic background may feel like a harmless play on words (and certainly intended that way) but it can cause harm, especially multiplied over a lifetime.

@The Who I'm certainly not calling you a racist, far from it, but I do think Australia as a whole has a lot of work to do to be more inclusive (me included).

As for the, our humour is dying or "cant take a joke" rhetoric......hogwash.
Comedy is going nowhere, people are just moving away from comedy that is at others expense.

Anyway......this is a footy forum and you are all good eggs so lets talk some footy

Hmmm. I think his comment was a poorly thought out throwaway line at worst. However, it seems mate that you've turned that into a big deal for no apparent reason, except to score points, and reinforce your point from another thread. To me it is a massive overreaction on your part, and serves more to magnify casual racism than counter it. There are a lot of impactful ways to counter racism in Australia society, your post was clearly not one of them.
Hope this helps.

I think a lot of it comes down to a case by case basis. As an indigenous person I think it’s perfectly fine to use self deprecating humour. It’s a way of dealing with a lot of topics which humour can disarm a bit and make lighter. There’s a pretty long history in Australia of white people giving Indigenous people joke names Or nick names. Usually this was when they were forcibly removed as children and put in an institution or foster home, or put under employment by a Coloniser. You’ll find in records there are a lot of Indigenous persons named like little jack or old Mary or billy boy. I understand these nick names would seem harmless in modern society, but it’s the power of the coloniser to take away a marginalised persons agency to self define and label them as a stereotype which causes harm. I think it’s so ingrained in our countries rhetoric and I’ve noticed it a lot on these threads. Posters trying to make up joke nicknames for every single player. Maybe If you don’t know the bloke personally try and refrain from Giving him a nickname at all, particularly one that’s a caricature of his cultural heritage.

If you really want to help – quite seriously - please tell us all about these “lot of impactful ways to counter racism in Australia society” that don’t require calling out inappropriate stuff when we come across it.

First up you could volunteer at a human rights organisation that specialises in developing strategies to counter racism in communities. There are any number of such organisations in every capital city in the country, plus many regional based organisations as well. Secondly, you could make contact with your local Aboriginal Lands Council, and see what programs they are delivering, and whether you have the skill sets to assist in implementing them. Thirdly, you could search for opportunities to volunteer on Community based Cultural Events. Almost every community has these, and they are always looking for people to sit on committee's, and for others to work on various practical aspects of the delivery of such events. I am facilitating an Indigenous Cultural Event this weekend. It's the fifth time we have delivered it, and to do so requires people who are prepared to devote a lot of time in planning the event, and delivering it on the day. I have also been involved in the facilitation of Indigenous Youth at Risk Suicide Prevention programs, Camps for Youth at Risk and other programs that are generally run by not for profits, including the development of anti-racism programs for street gangs. There are any number of things that you could do, if you had the willingness to step away from your keyboard, and actually try and make a difference. Lastly, use Google to get the information you claim you are seeking. It's not up to me to educate you on this, or any other topic. It's up to you. Hope this helps.
Finally, I come on this site to talk about NRL, and the greatest Rugby League club in the world, the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles. It's an escape from the daily grind, and the general societal bull**** that we are all living right now. I have to say a lot of people on here take themselves way to seriously for a fan forum, which is, what this site is supposed to be about after all.

Doing a lot of good and practical activities there and full credit to you . Even individual small or not so small contributions combined can go a long way to addressing whatever disadvantages or improving opportunities to those parts of society that still need or appreciate those type encouragement and support mechanisms and any subsequent cultural benefits also .

Its called letting it go through to the keeper. Jumping all over clumsy jokes is like putting them on a bill board for the wrong reasons even though the person making the joke had no malicious intent.
