Powerhouse winger Jorge Taufua set to stay a Sea Eagle
GLENN Stewart may be off at the end of the season, but powerhouse winger Jorge Taufua has given the Sea Eagles a big boost by revealing he is close to finalising a new deal with the club. Taufua has had the impact of a human tornado in his two games back after dislocating his shoulder and is being mentioned as a strong candidate for the NSW Origin side. His current contract runs out at the end of the season and negotiations are well underway for at Manly are looking good. “Things are looking good,” Taufua said yesterday. “My manager is taking care of that, I am looking to stay here. “Nothing is official yet but fingers crossed I can stay on the northern beaches.” Taufua, 22, made his NRL with Manly in 2012, said he was...
Lyon: Manly must move on
MANLY captain Jamie Lyon says it's time for the Sea Eagles to accept Glenn Stewart is moving on and refocus on on-field matters. A philosophical Lyon on Wednesday said as much as it would be nice to see the NRL introduce salary-cap concessions or dispensation for long-serving players, business is business and all good things come to an end. Stewart will leave Manly at the end of the season to take up a two-year deal with South Sydney. The former Test second-rower and Clive Churchill Medallist has helped the Eagles to two premierships from four grand final appearances in a celebrated 12-year career at Brookvale. “It's sad to see him go. I was definitely disappointed — you don't like seeing your good mates leave,” Lyon said...
Manly are confident they can continue to overcome the loss of key personnel with Kieran Foran ruled out for a month with a knee injury. The tough playmaker starred in the Sea Eagles' win over North Queensland last week without halves partner Daly Cherry-Evans, yet another occasion this season when the 2013 grand finalists have tasted victory without key players. Steve Mortimer, one of rugby league's great attacking players, appealed for the code's authorities to acknowledge finally that the 10 metres defensive line had sent the game backwards as an entertainment. The defensive line at a play-the-ball was extended from five to 10 metres in 1993 but Mortimer, who played for Canterbury's ''entertainers'' in the '70s and the ''enforcers'' of the '80s, said it was time to concede it had helped make the modern game too predictable. Stewart likely to be shown the door by Sea Eagles
LOYALTY may as well be wiped from the rugby league dictionary because the game refuses to reward or acknowledge its existence. Each year the head body parades retiring, long-service players as part of grand final day at ANZ Stadium but that is little more than a token public relations exercise. No club has suffered more from the game’s neglect of long-service players than Manly – a club few players want to leave. Local junior Steve Menzies is a classic example. Menzies went overseas after his greatest triumph versus the Melbourne Storm in 2008 and in his last year the club got $100,000 relief on the salary cap – for 15 consecutive seasons. Stewart has offered to play for less money than he has been offered...
Sea Eagles v Sharks Brookvale Oval Sunday 3pm (AEST) What a difference seven days makes in the world of rugby league. This time last week Manly were flying high on the back of impressive wins over the Roosters and Souths, and Glenn Stewart and the Sea Eagles board were tip-toeing through the tulips of his contract negotiations. Meanwhile down in the Shire, the Sharks found themselves scuttling about on the bottom of the NRL sea with a life raft full of injured stars floating about on the sidelines. Read More
NRL considers tougher laws on dangerous throws
The NRL's competition committee will next month consider changing the definition of a dangerous throw so that players performing tackles such as the one made by Gold Coast hooker Beau Falloon no longer escape a judiciary charge. Melbourne officials sought an official explanation for the lack of action against Falloon for an ugly tackle on Storm centre Will Chambers on Sunday, but the match review committee is only able to charge a player with a dangerous throw if they believe the ball carrier had been lifted into a position where the first point of contact with the ground was likely to be his head or neck. Chambers came down on his forearm and shoulder before rolling in an action players are taught when lifted, but by doing so...
OVER the years, many opposition players have come to Brookvale Oval and in their own words, had a “cow of a game.” Yesterday Sally the cow made for an unusual sight when she graced the hallowed turf ahead of a“Cow Pat Lotto” promotion this Sunday in conjunction with Royal Far West. Sea Eagles captain Jamie Lyon, no stranger to farm animals after growing up at Wee Waa, was happy to back the cause. Read More
A Sea Eagles pack that has matched it with some of the best forward packs in the NRL this year will be looking to restore some pride against Cronulla at Brookvale Oval on Sunday after being embarrassed at Leichhardt in Round 5. The still-developing Manly forward rotation surprised plenty with huge showings in wins over Souths in Round 2 and the Roosters in Round 4, but was swamped by a young and energetic Wests Tigers outfit in a 34-18 loss last weekend. Five NRL coaches on shaky ground
WHO would want to be an NRL coach in 2014? Imagine going to the bank to apply for a home loan when you can’t even guarantee you’ll still be employed six weeks into the competition. That’s how much pressure they are under these days. With the season about to start, there are five coaches preparing to kick-off NRL campaigns knowing their jobs are on the line. Steve Price at the Dragons, Mick Potter at the Tigers, Matthew Elliott at the Warriors, John Cartwright at the Titans and Anthony Griffin at the Broncos are all under the pump. This is no exaggeration. Look at the last three seasons where an average three coaches have been punted every year. Nine in three years. In 2011 it was Ivan Henjak at the Broncos, Kevin Moore...
